The gig last night was great! NO ONE in the house! (Well actually about 15 people) The place seats 200! We played better than we did last week in front of 1,000! LOL Isn't that a hoot? Anyway, It was time for a new snare batter head and I had been carrying around this new Evans Genera in my truck for over a week. I notice the head on it was a Genera 2. Mind you I'd not used Evans until about 6 months ago when Felix talked me into it. I'd had a bad taste in my mouth for "wasting" 45 bucks on an Evans EQ2 for my kick that I hated. But the wisdom of Felix prevailed and I gave Evans a second chance. The Genera 2 was great and I really liked it. So yesterday afternoon I get out my snare and put the Genera on there and take my time to properly tune it. I have a Pearl Free floater 14 x 8.5! It has the maple shell. A killer! A monster! Loud and just a rocking bohemous! So after tuning, I didn't really play it much. I just put it back in the case and load up for the show. Grin No sound check on the house PA. We just mic up and go for it! (Heck there's nobody there anyway!) I notice this snare is just KILLING me! And stays in tune pretty well too. After the first set the sound guy comes up and says "Greats set guys! I got you all dialed in ........(he looks at me) accept for you! That D*#%N Snare is too loud! LMAO! He went on to say "it sounds great! But you're killing me with volume! I have to ride your vocal mic so it doesn't over ride the mix!" So just wanted to say thanks to Felix for the tip. Evans Genera heads have really impressed me. And I was about to totally write them off. I've had trouble getting that snare to sound like I wanted it. But these heads have really let me get in the groove with my playing because I'm really impressed with how it rocks!

I don't like Evans heads at all. When I got vintage snare of mine replaced the guy who did it for me put on like the heaviest duty of Evans Heads. The ones that they claim compare to Remo Emporer heads.I broke the thing in less than a month.I have had Remo Coated Ambassadors last longer than that. But if Evans works for you, kick @$$ but for me I just had a bad experiance with them. And have you tried the new Remo Emporer X snare heads.Holy *%!$ the thing will never break. It has a dot in the center only the dot has a few layers to it.I got through the grey layer and was like oh great then I noticed the black layer. This was 2 months ago.The black hasn't faded nor have I had to tune it.Now thats a strong head there.

And the funny part is I'M NOT PLAYING EVAN's HEADS ANYMORE.

Maybe your snare just needed a new head combined with you knowing how to tune and play.

But yeah, I'm really glad you got something useful from the board here... cool.  I know I have a better sound because of it   Smiley

I'm not sure if it was so much what I did! LOL But I'm amazed at what came out of that snare Saturday night. It cut. It was loud. It sounded great and I had no tape or any muffling what so ever! No buzz! No hum or excessive over ring! It just freaking rocked all night! The rim shots sounded like a 30-06 rifle! I love that!  Grin I'm going to change the reso head this week as it's pretty old (over a year) and that should improve on what I already have!  Cool I've fallen back in love with my snare!

I've been wanting to try one of the Aquarian coated with the underside dot but the stores in my area don't carry them.

I'll have to roll the dice and buy one online..

You should take a page from Louis' book and document the settings with a Tension Watch. Before they slip away...

Great tip but I'm ahead of ya on that one! LOL I used my tension watch to tune close. Because the drum has cast hoops it tends to throw the watch off a bit. So I tuned 80 on the reso head (Remo snare side), then tuned by ear to get it in pitch. Then 70 on the batter (the Evans Genera) and then tuned by ear to get it in pitch. What I've noticed using the watch on the snare is this... You can set each lug at say "80" and I double and tripple check them to make sure they all are at 80. But when you go around each lug with the stick, you can hear the pitch differences and clearly there's more tension on some lugs than others. Cast hoops don't work well with tension watches. But I get close, then really zoom it in by ear.

fer sure, I had a G2 on my 6.5 brass before I dumped that drum on ol' Pops (R.I.P.).  Those are some loud snare heads for some reason.  Maybe it has to do with all that mass in the film- I don't know.  But yeah, they carry.

Well, since Louder was so geeked about these goofy G2 heads I swapped out my spent ambassador that was on my ferro sonor and put one on (had a new one laying around)

It's nice on that drum (using 1/2 of a studio ring for dampening) but I would like to try a studio x on it to focus it a little more

slightly harsh for my taste but all in all pretty good after I let it settle in for a few days
