my aunt lives in seattle, and is a major accountant for a bunch of big bands (foo fighters, alice in chains *formerly*) anyway, we were visiting her, and we went to guitar center, i played some drums for her, and she told me that i was plenty good for a band that she knew, she said she'd hook me up with an audition in S.F. (i live outside sf).  The problem is i dont think my dad will let me because im 16, and school is more important... i respect his thoughts, but i dont know how to get both, (my aunt says this may take a while.)

Ummmm,.....

Arene't you sort of counting your chickens before they're hatched?  No Offense.

You have an aunt, that thinks she knows a guy, that has a band, that might need a drummer, that might give you an audition.....

...and you're already worried about if you'll need to drop out of school???!!!

Take a deep breath.  Get some more details.  I mean, is it the Grateful Dead, or Bob Anderson's Polka Kings??!!

I don't want to sound like I'm playing the Dad Card... which means, of course, I'll sound like it anyway.  Grin

In the phrase Music Business, the second word is business. Your chances at success in business are increased greatly when you have a solid education.

These days, a four-year college degree is treated like a high school diploma.   Tongue

Is this your first audition? I've had a TON of auditions and have won quite a few. More went bad than good; some turned me down, others I had turned down. An audition is one thing... a contract (money) to play is another.

I guess it depends on how you approach your drummimg.

If you are playing for fun, then definitely stay in school and get your education.

However, if you're a serious drummer, then definitely stay in school and get your education.

You'll need it!

I'm with drumwild. Stick with school. You only have 2 years left. In that time, find a local band, get some club gigs under your belt. You can educate yourself in music as well as in school before going out into the music business.

Like those celebrities on NBC say... "The More You Know".

Yep, I'm with these very enlightened fellows!  Grin Sounds to me as if you may have already picked out which tour bus and what color limo you'd be riding in! An audition is a far cry from landing a paying gig! And paying gigs are a far cry from going out on tour! LOL Stay in school and don't lose your cool!  Wink

By all means, do the audition, and in the meantime learn everything you can about this opportunity.

But as far as leaving school, try looking at it like this:

If this opportunity means instant stardom and riches, go for it. By that I mean the same sort of situation where a highschool athlete is offered a starting position for an NBA team. And that's about how good your chances are that this opportunity is that good.

If it's just a chance to go on the road with a band, for mediocre to crappy money, relax. You've got the whole rest of your life to do gigs like that.

Stay in school, unless it's Neal Peart deciding to hand his gig over to you.

But do the audition. Win or lose, you'll learn a lot from it.

no no, i mean the audition will be during school, and she says it may be held over a few days, (but only for a short time of the day)... by no means am i expecting anything out of this.. im just trying to see if he'll let me go to the audition in the first place.. (he's very very strict about school)

i guess i did kinda phrase that retarded... sorry for the confusion... bak too skool fore me

I think we ALL took it the wrong way! Roll Eyes

Maybe I started everyone's brain on the wrong track.  Sorry.

Still, get some more details and see what it's all about.

Good Luck! Wink
