I need something new to learn so I'm considering getting into double kick playing, which I've never done before. (Plus, some of the material I've been doing recently just seems to call for it.)
Any advice on some of the better double kick pedals on the market? I saw a Gibralter Avenger II pedal on sale. I've always been a DW5000 guy, but I'm willing to expand my horizons.

well, im very fond of the tama iron cobras, but the DWs are great as well, also the pearl eliminator....all quality products, just try some and pick the one that feels best, and resembles your old single pedal in a way (that is if you like your single pedal)

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone else have any other thoughts? Anyone go through a few models before falling in love with one? Any problems with particular models, like durability/quality issues?
Thanks...

The newer dw's are ok, but like all dw stuff I think it's borderline value wise. I've worn out a pair of dw pedals when they first came out with the hinges (after Camco)...the dbl pedal I have now is an accelerator...it's alright. I had to loc tite the screws holding the floor board to the pedal asm. to keep the darn things from coming out.
I've actually even wore out an axis pedal. It was very quiet and smooth in the beginning but gradually got louder with age, then it developed a "clicking" sound that drove me nuts.
I like yamaha foot pedals. To me they are very fast and predictable for the money. They don't have the lateral stability of a dw or the velocity, but their stroke is even and smooth. I like them. I think you will find that everyone is going to have an opinion on this, but to me, the best value for the money are the yamadogs. I don't care for pearl hdw, or gibralter. I also don't like Iron Cobras...they seem to always feel like a "heel up" pedal to me...but that's me.
good luck btw, dbl bass is where it's at man- totally a blast.

well im a total tama prostitute, i just love the iron cobras, they feel like heel down pedals for me i do agree with felix, most people will have different opinion......if you get past a certain price point, the pedals are all decent, hardware wise (well, most of them ), so the "feel" factor gets more important

Why don't you get one of those sonor giant step pedals and be different than everybody else? You won't have to compromise your setup and you won't learn all the licks everyone else is playing...your stuff will always sound a little different.
Can you imagine just for fun those things on two kick drums?
Totally wild.

I thought about that too felix, that would be rad! But now there is a new Giant step which is the normal two-part pedal with an extension (get it?) So you have a double pedal and the primary footboard is split so you have three pedals for two feet basically.

I'm a Iron Cobra fan myself. I have the double kick pedal and the Hi-Hat stand as well. In my opinion, the smoothest motion on the market. Kinda pricy, but worth it.

Well Side, I knew what to write....and then noticed Felix pretty much beat me to it. Anyway, I too had an Axis double....I didn't have a chance to wear mine out though -I hated it too much to ever spend time growing into it. It was just WRONG....can't remember more than hating it for some forgotten reason and then selling it. I've always played Yamaha's....I have three singles and a double. I've worn the paint off all of them and have never once been left with a broken spring or chain. Not even once in many years. That's worth something. I use them first and foremost because I like the feel....just very natural. I suppose it has a lot to do with what your feet get used to though.

I have to admit my Yamaha pedals pretty much kicked butt. The one I have now is really sloppy but it's fast and relatively quiet. The one thing I'm P.O.'d about yamaha is they are cheaping out on the plastic inserts in their cymbal stands...I dropped a newer indochina stand a while back and the thing cracked so easy it was pathetic. Iron Cobras have just too light of a beater for my taste (can you say wimpy?) ...I have to play heel up to get the power I'm used too. There was this guy in the studio who was a gorilla of a huge dude...well he had an iron cobra a.k.a. the "die cast garden snake" and I had to CRANK on that channel's trim- and that kick still sounded like a baby beating on it with a lolipop. It was a weird experience and probably not representative of all Iron Cobra players- (note disclaimer).
