Im giddy as a schoolgirl on prom night whose date is the star quarterback and he drives a Jaguar.

Im sure most of us have our holy grail's of geardom.  That one peice of gear that is highly desired, and highly elusive.   In most cases part of that ellusion is rarity, part of it price when it does turn up.

Well ... I scored one of my grails last night.   Its a guitar so I wont bother you with details.  But I will say that I got lucky and stumbled onto it in the last day of its auction cycle.  It was being sold by a reputable seller.  There were no bids, and the buy it now was still open.  The buy it now price was about 2/3rds what any Ive ever seen in that condition go for.  Its in great condition.  And most importantly, I had the money to buy it.

I had one question about something in thier description and didnt want to buy it until that was cleared up.  It was one of those things where I was sick to my stomach at the prospect of loosing this deal.  I waited 10 minutes for a reply.  UNBELIEVABLY speedy on the sellers part.  That 10 minutes saw me pacing and babbling about how if I didnt hear back someone would bid and itd be out of my range in no time.   But they did write back, they did confirm my suspicions about the description, and I did buy it now within seconds of recieving their reply.

I found my grail.   I bought my grail.  My grail will be shipped today or tomorrow if all goes to plan.

So heres the real point of the thread (my gloating wasnt it).   Share your grail experiences.   The times youve found it and lost it, the stories of the quest, the stories of the acquisition.    Or just share what your grail is, and maybe why.

My best friend in the whole world just found and bought a 1948 Gibson 350, all original (although he replaced the nut and bridge to make it giggable).

Few years back I had a steady Fri/Sat gig that made me enough to get a new Walter Woods.

Yeah, one of those "no more than 10% metal" kits would be sweet.  Wood lugs, wood hoops, single ply shells (insert Homer Simpson drooling noise here).

I guess mine would be finding a 14" mahogany gonbops to fill out my set.  The company has been out of business for a while,  so it could be a challenge!  But I did just acquire a 10 and 11 inch gonbops congas, in mahogany, just a couple of months ago.  They were on consignment at a local drum store here in Boulder.  A friend of mine ran in and bought them for me, so no one else would scoop them up.  He got them before i had even seen them or knew what color they were.  If it's a mahogany gonbops, I don't care if it's pink!  I guess really my grail comes in 4 parts,.....4 congas.  I now have 3/4 of my grail.  I can see the top of the mountain from here!

After thrashing it around in my head for awhile, my true holy grail would be that marvelously restored 40's Slingerland kit that Buddy Rich played after he and Ludwig fell out of love for the last time.  All original hardware (beavertail lugs and stickchopper hoops)  beautifully replated and new marine pearl wrap.  It was finally revealed where it came from but I've never heard where it ended up.  Maybe Cathy still has it, or is that the kit that went to the Smithsonian ? The kit that is shown on one of the
"appreciation " sites shows a kit that is supposedly the last kit he played on but it is a more modern set.

If it ever did go on the market I would never be able to afford it anyway, but one can wish.

It was a joke, Im sorry you didnt get the joke. It wasn't intended to upset you. It was a joke. I apologize since you are obviously upset over it and that is not what I intended. That being said, dude, you really have to get a sense of humor, that was about as harmless as it gets.

Guess I need a new grail.  The BR kit mentioned above is indeed at the Smithsonian, so will never reach the market now anyway.  Besides, it is about the same as what I am using for my big band now, complete with clamp- on tom mount and RK snare.  Except for the snare, I have the more modern lugs however, and a 22" bass rather than the 24" he used.

I've got five for this one:

My "Found it and lost it" Grail - I owned a little Rogers kit (script badges), 12"TT 14"FTT 20"BD, and a Keystone Acrolite snare, and I sold it - I didn't realize what I had at the time.

My "Previous 'Grails'" - Istanbul K.Zildjians; DeMorrow marimba (still on the list, I guess), and a set of vibes owned by my friend, Brian Murphy.

My "Fun 'Grail'" - a set of bass pans - preferably at least eight barrels.  That, and a house with a room big enough to leave them set up.

My "Non-gear 'Grail'" - a gig - any gig - with Tony Levin, Steve Swallow, or Anthony Jackson

My "Current 'Grail'" - given my recent lust for snare drums, I'd have to say that my "grail" would be a Gladstone snare drum.

...and Roger, I'll see your Packard, and raise you a Duesenberg.   Cool

It arrived today...  !!!  My grail via Fedex.

Genista Birch kit in Turqoiuse lacquer..  I have been wanting this set since 1995 when I saw a genista in Atlanta drums and percussion which are now out of buisness.  I love it.  I still have to play with it and tweak some tuning, but first impressions are A++++

I had just bought a premier XPK about 3 weeks ago too and now the Genista..  I should have waited but ...  I didn't think id get the oppurtunity again since they are not being made anymore..  No the only bad thing is I have to sell my XPK's which I became very fond of (posted in the classifieds)

Well off to play Grin
