OK, so I have gleaned many helpful bits of tuning advice from this and other drum forums.  I have become fairly well skilled tuning my toms and BD.  I have even been able to discover and apply different ranges across these elements of my kit... BUT....

the snare drums are killing me!! Embarrassed  I currently own the following snares:
- Mapex V Series BS snare drum... soon to be converted to a full-time practice pad using the nifty Remo mesh head/metronome gadget.
- Pork Pie 6.5x14 steel "Black Beauty" which has factory PP snare wires and heads (Remo coated batter, clear reso.)
- Yamaha Bamboo in 5.5x14 with Evans Coated Reverse Dot batter and Hazy Snare side.  Puresound Blaster 12 strand.
-  Ludwig Supraphonic in "Ludalloy" with Aquarian Carmine Appice batter and Aquarian High Energy reso.  Puresound Equalizer 12 strand...

All of them sound pretty much like crap to me.  I can't tune out the ring on any of these drums.

SO... can you guys help me understand how tight a snare is typically tuned?  Is "tight tuning" really, really tight?  I think I've gone too far off the deep end trying to control the ringing and now the Yammy and the Supra are muted and very dry.

Any suggestions on tuning, snare or head selection are welcomed.  I gotta get rid of the annoying combination problem I have with both snare tension and head tuning.

Fire at will...  (And thanks!)

The muted sound could be the snares are to tightly turned. I used Plowboys suggestion which he learned from Joe Morello. Tune the snare to the first two notes of Here Comes The bride. Bottom head first. I really like my batter head cranked very tight, but how tight is tight??? After I get it tuned then I adjust the snares tension. Good luck, tuning is hell.
