We have a three drum Guaguanco we call the "Havana style" which is very similar to your two drum one. Here's the notation:

All of the slaps I notated after the first two can also be touches, and was originally written that way,, but soft slaps sound pretty cool there.

Ok Bart,
you are right if we are talking 8th notes there is no center between the first two clave hits (two bar 3/2 clave).

BUT if first slap needs to be in the middle then we could right out 16th as I did above and put it in the middle ... right? 2 16th on one side and 2 on the other.

And yes I ment on the "u".

Anyway I am going to stick with the 8th for now as it's dificult enough for me. Cheesy

By the way Bart I used your suggestion and am playing tambourine with my foot. Just laying it on the ground. The guy I play with liked what it adds. So thanks... now if I only could keep it steady... Tongue

BTW, I had to go back to the modify button a few thousand times just to line the Xs,, and still couldn't get them to synch up right. I tried it with the "pre" tag and different sizes. Jeeze... Is this common?

instead of going back and modifying you can use the "preview" button beside the "post" button, saves a little trouble.

Just answer me this guys. Can you keep the clave two bar and right it out with 16th? like this:

I understood all along where the slap shoud be. All I was trying to say that IF it was in "the middle" you could notate it with 16th.

And, as if that wasn't enough..... I just went to a lesson with Dusty tonight and asked him about the slap placement question, and where I got that idea. When I was first learning the quinto ride, I was flam-ing the slap with the clave from my other hand. He told me to wait and give it space, and it sounded like it was in the middle of the clave strikes to me... Nope! That whole bit was a big lie!
It's a 16th after the first strike - like we had it in notation, and Bart said the whole time!!
Sorry guys!

I learned a ton, and Fed figured out some cool stuff about counting with notation,, so I guess wasn't all bad...

But jeeze,, I hate to throw out stupid lies like that..

It is threads such as this one that makes me love the Drummer Cafe even more. On other forums this would have turned into a major flame war rather than a discussion between pros. I just love this place.

Ditto on that, Louis. It is a rare and beautiful thing to see percussionists hash things out in a friendly way. Thanks for all the input, everyone.
Oh, by the way, the "Dusty" in windhorses post is me, if you hadn't guessed already.
Hey Bart, were you standing in those recordings, or sitting? I'm curious, and I am trying to get a performance setup figured out. It seems like playing the pedals while standing could be easier. I haven't tried it yet. I guess a big issue for me and pedals is that I play traditional style on the floor most of the time. This leaves my legs occupied with holding up the quinto. I guess I'll need to get stands to be able to do this pedal thing! Cool, more toys to get!
