ive been playin drums for about 2.5 years but really off and on. i have a sabian aax stage 16inch crash and zildijan 14inch new beat hi hats. i am ganna get a ride for x-mas and just wanted some opinions. i dont think it matters but everyone i know has like cymbal sets, all my stuff is diff brands and diff types, should i try to get a ride that goes with my hi hats or maybe get a sabian aax stage ride to go with my crash? or would it be fine if i just got a paiste ride that sounds good? just tell me what you guys would get with my setup, then ill go play em at my local store and see what i feel is best

The BEST way to choose cymbals is to take other to the store with you and try the new ones out until you hear one that "matches" well SONICALLY with your others.
What you buy will ultimately be up to you and YOUR ears.

Youre crash and hats are remarkably similar as is. Different brands yes, but with some similarities. In the end sound is all that matters as Jon pointed out. But if you want to start in a logical area, start with what you have. Try some Zildjian A's and Sabian AA's. Take into account what they are and what makes them different from other cymbals and then steer yourself toward what it most inclined to be the sound you want. Hitting every cymbal in the store is one way to find the one you like the best. But knowing about cymbals and what makes them sound the way they do will make shopping easier and more fruitfull. Id recommend getting "The Cymbal Book" by Hugo Pinksterboer for Thanksgiving as a little preliminary education and research.

thanx for the help, and one more question. i spent alot of money on my hi-hats but still dont think they get a great sound when i close em with my foot or when i have em closed tightly and hit em. would it sound better if i got a better hi hat stand? mine is pretty crappy and i feels i can only get a splashy sound

The only way the stand should make a difference in the sound of your hats is if you dont have it setup to get the sound you want. Is your top hat too far from the bottom? So when you play with your foot they dont get closed enough? I dont really see how this is possible without the top hat being further up than the pedal can come down, and thats got to be 4" or so. So I doubt thats its. But still, experiment with your hat settings. The other option is that you just dont like the sound of your hats. Perfectly legit. Just cause it costs alot (or what many people like and recommend) doesnt mean itll give you the sound youre after The good thing here is that you know what you like and what you dont like. Many folks dont. So you may just need different hats to suit your tastes.

cant add much to what's already here, but if you REALLY wanna be anal about looking for your next ride...
if you're a rock guy, i think you should find a ride with a stick sound that best matches up with the stick sound of your hihats, since they'll probably be mostly played for the steady 8th's or 16th's.
but some guys like myself, like a ride that i can "crash" on. so i try and match up my ride sounds with whatelse? my crashes!

yea thanx agian for your help. about my hats, when i close my hi hats sometimes they arent even, one will be a little to the side of the other one and then when i open em up the top hat slants and is about an inch higher then the bottem on one side, and slightly touching the bottem hat on the other side. just messin with all the different high hats at the store i noticed they are all perfectly straight and held much more even.
anyone know a good crash/ride pack that would go good with my zildijan new beats i could check out that is around $220-$250 or so?

One note about those bad sounding hi-hats...
No, it isn't the stand...but rather bad cymbals. Yes, I am not ripping on Zildjian, or Zildjian A's in particular. God knows I love Avedis cymbals...I own many! You must try out every cymbal that you get. My friend bought a 16" Thin Zildjian "A" cymbal off musicians friend. No, I am not saying anything bad about musicians friend. Whereas, I have the same Thin Zildjian "A" cymbal, but only in a 18" size. You would think that ours sound similar, with mine having only a slightly lower sound and longer decay? No. Not at all. My crash is truely a "thin" crash...and it sounds like it is thin. However, his actually sounds like a heavy "rock" crash...
Maybe a bad stamping? Not sure, but he wasn't too happy with it. It sounds like his is either crashing his bottom hi hat, or hitting a garbage can.
Just test everything out first before you buy it. Every Individual cymbal is different. You may find that you prefer an A Custom, K Cymbal, K Custom, Z Custom, or even a Paste...The style of music also depends on your cymbal selection. I certainly wouldn't buy a Z-Custom for an oldies band...lol
Wow...I have said enough, I will shutup now.

When it comes down to the nitty gritty of it,when you go to get a ride cymbal fist determine what you like to play. You prefer to play metal get some heavy. You like jazz get something light and bouncy.Decide what your application is and go from there.
