Regardless of the music style you are playing, I think it's key to practice your hihat foot hits even if you don't use it that much, but to keep your overall playing more comfortable.

For example: How many of you have problems keeping the hihat closed tight while playing 16th notes on it without tensioning your left leg too much?

Good thoughts.

I've also noticed side benefits, like better timekeeping, and better independence (which comes in handy for double-bass work).
