I took drum lessons for some time but moved right before I started learnin fills. I jam with my band for fun daily and I am havin a hard time commin up with fills. I can keep a beat and throw in a simple fill and hit some cymbals, but I need some more stuff to add in while I play. any ways to practice to learn new fills and get better at them? maybe a dvd or play along cd that could help me, or any other tips how you guys learned?

Find a teacher. You'll learn SO much faster with somebody guiding you.

I just found out most of the recordings I'm on were actually played by Bernard Purdie.

I learned a TON of fills by playing along with other people's music in my early years. Everything from Buddy Holly/Elvis to Rush to Metallica.

Perhaps just listen to some more music and find some fils you like that you think you can copy then work on them, and try to improvise your own style into it... while you are looking for a good teacher

A teacher you should get.

Until then, you can use the 40 rudiments and apply them into your fills. Some may work for you, some won't, but you can learn just by playing around and seeing what you can invent.

Also, www.vicfirth.com & http://www.moderndrummer.com/playing.asp has some educational material that may help as well. Specifically the "third hand" that utilizes your kick into fills.

mix & match all this together and by the time you have a teacher ready, you'll have something to work with.

my teacher never taught me how to play fills, in fact, he didn't even teach me many beats. he taught me something better: how to teach myself. I've had other teachers and never learned near as much as I have with matt.
