Come to one of the best, most fun drum festivals around. At the Seattle Center April 2-4. The schedule is up. Did I mention it's free? Go to: www.swps.org

I would like to go but have a gig that weekend. Everyone tells me how great it is but I have never gone yet, even though Seattle is close to where I live. Maybe next year.
Any of you guys heard of the drum tower at the Oregon Country Fair? It's in July outside Eugene, OR and it's a blast. I'll be there.

I got to play onstage at the Country Fair a couple of times. Loved the whole experience. This was before the days of drum circles. I noticed they have a website now, and you have to buy advance tickets. I'm thinking, maybe I should get one of those tickets and reserve a motel room. Is the Notel still there? It's always the weekend after July 4th, if I remember right.

Hello Marker, Yeah you got it right, it's the weekend after the 4th of July weekend. I don't know about the Notel. The Fair tickets are sold in advance now, you can get 'em at the Safeway ticket counter. They got busses running from downtown Eugene that are handy if you aren't bring a lot of gear. I usually drive and bring a cartful of drums.
For those of you who don't know, the Fair dates back to the 60's, an annual counterculture type event, a four day hippy dippy frolic in the woods and meadows. There are jugglers & jesters, musicians galore, stilt-walkers, spontainous parades, food, arts & crafts, all like a throw back to some other place in time. The sound of drums are everywhere, and if you're lucky, after dark, the djembe masters may appear.
It's an experience that gets etched in your memory.
If you go, don't forget tape for your fingers, maybe your barefeet.

The only defense against a djembe in a large circle is a djembe, or something equally as loud. Did you check out some of the Afro Cuban Latin workshops offered? There will be more Sunday. You can learn from the masters. One way I judge experiences is how well they stay in my mind. I have the feeling some of the experiences I had today will stay with me for a long time. The festival will continue tommorrow at ten am. Be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour tonight or you'll be really confused. Did I mention it's free?

Dang! Sometimes I wish I lived on the West Coast, and this is one of those times. Marker, sounds like you went where I would have gone! Hey, I've played at the country fair a few times too! Shady Grove! I may go this year, but not sure yet..

Hollow a log into a drum. It's the space inside that makes the sound.

The festival went off great, except we lost a dance instructor who gave her very last performance at the festival. She had heart problems, and shortly after she danced, she collapsed. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. The whole festival went silent for about 10-15 minutes. I guess if you gotta go, you might as well doing something you love. Thankfully, I didn't know her personally.
Other than that, it was wonderful. I attended several excellent classes, and jammed outside in beautiful weather until my arms were ready to drop off.
I ran into tons of old friends and made some new ones. Everyone was happy, kind and supportive of each other. I wish the world was like that all the time.
