I'd have to say "Different Stages" because of the large quantity of music (3 cd's worth) and IMO the CD's contain a large variety of Rush that is a good representation of their work.

"Different Stages".  I am a huge Rush and Neil fan (as we've discussed).  This 3 CD set easily contains the largest body of work for a solid introduction.  The first 2 discs are a mixture of old and new, and then there is the bonus 3rd disc, which is a mid to late 70's recording that has been remastered.  A good representation of how Neil has evolved as a drummer, and how the band has evolved as a group.  The 3 discs also are a good mixture of popular and obscure Rush tunes.

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation.  Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.

Right-
Hemispheres as the best example of the "concept" album they ever did with Moving Pictures being the band's masterpiece.

A buddy of mine and I had a similar conversation the other day. Since we're both Rush fans, we decided on Chronicles to be the best overall RUSH experience.

ditto---plus its got "Temple of Sphyrinx" on it too Smiley

Haven't bought any yet - I'm still tallying people's responses.

But I did watch part of the live in Rio DVD at a friend's house this weekend, and enjoyed it. During Neil's solo, he briefly switched to traditional grip for some snare drum stuff, and it looked a lot better than in his instructional video. Overall he looked less stiff than when I've seen him before, and the crowd LOVED him.

I'll cast another vote for the Different Stages 3-disc set. You get pretty much the greatest hits from 2112, Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, Presto, Counterparts and Test For Echo. (Aside - I think Presto is one of their best studio albums. Lyrically, it is a standout.) The 1978 bonus disc is a screech.

Mr A.!

Nice to see you willing to expand your horizons here.

I'm a Rush fan of almost 25 years and Neil is the reason I started playing drums.

The album that inspired me was A Farewell To Kings. Great drum sounds and of course a great performance. My favorite album would be Moving Pictures - with the great "unknown" track called The Camera Eye.

The problem with getting an album like Chronicles or one of the Retrospective albums is that you're getting the most popular songs and not neccessarily the songs that showcase Neil's most creative playing. The deep cuts off A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures and even the recent Vapor Trails are the ones you really don't want to miss.

If I had to recomend just one to someone, it would be Rush In Rio. If only because it will expose you to the greatest amount of material in a single purchase.

A serious study of the complete Rush In Rio DVD performance would be my recommendation if you were to allow that format as an option.

Wow.  Like many others, I am huge fan of the band.  Very, very hard to pin down my one and only favorite... considering the variations in style that have occurred over the many years and many albums.  So many great albums, aside from Pictures... there's Permanent Waves (!!), Hemispheres, 2112 (!!!)....

But, my current favorite for play along (this week) is: Signals - great variety of tunes, some killer grooves, etc.  Geddy is toned down a bit, IMO.

For live Rush, my personal fave has always been Exit..Stage Left, followed immediately by All The World's a Stage.  Different Stages is cool, too, but I can never play the CDs with the more recent performances... they just sound like crap to me. (ala "Show of Hands")  I don't know.. just something tinny about the recording.

I have the "Rush in Rio" DVD and CD and have to tell you I think it represents the best from their old to new. The rendition of "Tom Sawyer" while slowed down a bit, sounds better than ever! Neil's quads during the fill were Flawless, and as stated before, Geddy's vocals have toned down with age.

I'd have to pick Rush in Rio. It has a little bit of everything from each album, and it has a good drum solo (O Baterista). I'd recommend that one.

Favorite Rush album.....Jesus christ.I can in no way pick one.I have them all. From ST to Rio.I can't pick.I love them all, everysong on every album. The reason I love them all is because each one is so different from the one before.I even have the vinyl Anthology which was never released on CD or Tape. For those who don't know about it,it is the first 3 rush albums on one vinyl.Wow,man great question, but I for one can't give an answer.

yeah, one is hard.  but i'm with a few others in that everything post-Moving Pictures isn't really worth the time, essentially because as someone pointed out, they go off into synth-land.

i actually really dug geddy's vocals, and was disappointed when they made him tone it down.

my fave is probably hemispheres, but in the "concept album" vain [sp?], i think they also struck gold on 2112, farewell to kings, spirit of radio, and moving pictures. moving pictures is worth it for yyz and red barchetta alone. i've tried playing to that tune and ended up feeling much like the puppet on the cover of farewell to kings.

i'd like to check out the rio dvd.

break down and get 2 or 3 rush cds   Grin
