I was just curious if anyone here has used these kinds of monitors, especially the custom molded kind.

Reason I ask is because I need to try a different monitor solution for my additional vocal responsibilities while playing, and I do not want to sacrifice the hearing for that since I've been wearing ear plugs for the last 20 years.

My understanding is that the silicon custom molds are supposed to provide comparable isolation/protection while feeding the monitor mix.

I've come across a couple of sites (http://www.hearyourself.com and http://www.sensaphonics.com) that cater to these.

Any experiences or info would be greatly appreciated!

You can buy in-ears and have your local audiologist make custom earmolds for your in ears. This is the best isolation. You will have the best mix as well. Since YOU control the volume that you hear with in ears, you get to determine how you want it to be. You can by your own mini mixers for in ears that gives you control over the mix you recieve as well. Lot's of options- try 'em you'll like them.

We've had a thread on this very subject before. Lot's of opinions, but I like them. Ear damage? I don't buy that theory at all, because you as the user have the ultimate control over the db level you hear. Hope this helps-

Right now the only IEMs I'm aware of are the Shure E1 and E5. Do you know of others that I could investigate?

in-ears have me intrigued.  i don't really play much in places where i need a monitor, but when i have we've used wedge monitors, which i wasn't particularly enamored of.  i don't really play loud music anymore, so chances are, i'll never need them.

Shure makes in ears as does Westone and Sennheiser. There are several others but I can't think of their names off hand. But for sure do a google and take a look. I LOVE my IEMs! I really think these things are great! Worth every penny!  Cheesy And they ain't cheap guys! Get ready to drop some serious cabbage for the good ones.

I was just informed of this site.

Take a pair of KOSS "The Plugs" ($20 usd), add modification costs (+/- $10) and you have a pair of IEMs!

I just got a new pair of "Future Sonics" EM3 IEM's and they have drastically improved on my system! The Koss fix looks cool and I may try THAT should anything falter with my new ear buds. But the Future Sonics list for just $99. A bit more than the Koss, but no modifications are needed! They sound great right out of the box!

Ademdem;
Afetr rehearsal last night, I have to say the Future Sonic EM3's rool like ozzy! Geez what a difference! I'm lovin it!
