I've heard great things about Wesleyan College in Middletown, CT.

From what I've heard and read they have great worldmus and ethnomus programs happening there.  It's a pretty tough school to get into, from what yahoo has to say about admissions.

Looks like they have graduate programs in wm and e.m. but i don't see that stopping a potential undergrad from delving into the courses offered.

And of course, Bob Becker did graduate studies there, note this passage from his Nexus bio..

"Bob Becker holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he studied percussion with William Street and John Beck, and composition with Warren Benson and Aldo Provenzano. He also spent four years doing post-graduate study in the World Music program at Wesleyan University where he became intensely involved with the music cultures of North and South India, Africa and Indonesia. As a founding member of the percussion ensemble NEXUS, he has been involved with the collection and construction of a unique multi-cultural body of instruments as well as the development of an extensive and eclectic repertoire of chamber and concerto works."

I'd suggest checking out Northern Illinois University (http://www.niu.edu).  They don't necessarily "specialize" in world music, but they do have one of the top steel band programs in the world, and instruction/classes in tabla, gamelan, African drumming...there used to be an Andean ensemble, but I don't know if they still offer that.  Plus, NIU is in DeKalb, IL, which is about an hour's drive from Chicago, which has a thriving cultural scene, including musics from around the world.

FWIW, I'm an alumnus of NIU (and for a semester, a teacher in the percussion department), but I don't currently have any affiliation with the school.

James-
Does Chap still teach at NIU? He was doing his grad work at North Texas when I was there. The most musical percussionist I have ever known!!

Yep - and you're right, Robert's very musical indeed!  Wonderful piano player and composer as well!

Currently, the percussion faculty at NIU includes:

Robert Chappell
Rich Holly (also associate dean)
Orlando Cotto
Liam Teague
Cliff Alexis

I'm not sure who is doing Asian/Indonesian music there currently - my understanding is that the teacher who was there when I was a student, Dr. Han, recently retired.
