welp,
if we're gonna go along with Bart's example, he may have chosen them for a church's setup, yet he doesnt have a single drop of Sonor in his collection?
but, so what if Bart uses or doesnt use Sonor? does it really matter? Dave Weckl uses my fav brand of the moment, Yamaha, but that fact is not gonna make me wanna like his playing. Matt Cameron, who i hold in the highest regard for rock group drumming, was a long time Ayotte user, but i'd never shell out the kind of dough for what they're priced.
i'm not discounting Sonor gear. its obviously good stuff. but i wouldnt use mere endorsements or whether or not something is manufactured in Germany as a basis for a "good" drum brand. its all relative. early '70s VW Beetles were made in German, but they were known to be most unsafe and unreliable cars of its era!
if a drum has the sound that you like over another drum company's sound, if it has a certain unique quality that makes you sit up and notice, is built well enough for you, and is priced accordingly to you, and most of all has the "Pitter Patter" factor for you, then you make your own value judgements, and pass that info onto the next guy. in the end, your own opinions are what really count.
