I went to see Dream Theater in London on Saturday night and all I could say when I was coming out of the arena was 'wow'. They all played amazing, as I expected, but I was not expecting an amazing show as well. Mike Portnoy is a great showman!! He was playing his stuff, and then he would throw a stick into the crowd, or up in the air, keep playing then catch the stick and still play, without mistakes or anything!! It was truly inspiring.
I also saw something I thought I would never see, two handed tapping on a BASS!! It blew me away.
Anyway reply to this what you will, but I had to share it with fellow musicians

3 words- Les Claypool & Primus More 2 handed bass tapping than you'd ever care to see, as well as some killer drumming. I saw DT(they opened for ELP and Deep Purple) a few years ago, yes, they are excellent live.

I also saw something I thought I would never see, two handed tapping on a BASS!! It blew me away. And before Les Claypool there was Stu Hamm and Michael Manring, and before Hamm and Manring there was Tony Levin. I wouldnt be surprised if there were more, further back as well (Stanley Clarke?), but those are the first names to come to my mind. (Heck, I know Ive been doing two handed tapping on bass for probably about 15 years now) Like drums, bass is often thought to be limited to simple roles, and its just not the case. There is more to the instrument if you want it.

I always thought there was something like this out there. Like a whammy bar on a bass. I bet someone has done this, but its the kind of the thing that you have to be so good at the bass its really uncommon to see it. I know for a fact that there is a large lack of bassists in the music industry (perhaps because of the dumb stereotypes they are given??) and that would explain why I had seen nothing of the sort before.
Thanks for the links for other bands guys, I'll make sure to check them out.

ILike a whammy bar on a bass. I believe TM Stevens uses whammy on bass. And it strikes me as familiar with other players but not being a fan of the whammy bar, I havent paid enough attention. The mid-late 80's was a big time for exotic bass action. Lots of cats doing solo stuff that wasnt really approached before. Treating as a lead. It was mostly guys who had been in the fusion world, like Marc Egan, John Pattitucci, Patrick O'Hearn, Steve Swallow, Jeff Berlin, Bunny Brunell ... Id be surpised if those guys HADNT at some point used a whammy bar among other things.

Speaking of lead bass, get out to see Stanley Clarke when you can. He mostly plays piccolo bass with his group, and Armand Sabal-Lecco plays bass behind him. Their duet is one of the high points of recent shows.
When I saw them this summer Gerry Brown was playing drums, and there were two keyboardists. Looks like the keyboards arel gone, and Brown was replaced by Franklin Vanderbilt.

Speaking of lead bass, Billy Sheehan anyone?
I'm a big Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy fan. They have never failed to entertain and impress. Have you seen the DVD? I was at that show. I also caught a very early NY Club appearance during Images and Words.

Might be showing my age but I saw Billy doing this with Talas "back in the day" - early 80's. He is an amazing player. hrmp...Tony Levin...I hear his name and can only think of the intro to "Elephant Talk" by King Crimson...I think it was from the 'Disipline" album. Love that song. "Talk, Talk, its Only Talk!" as for the whammy bar..I saw Victor Wooten punish his whammy at the newport Jazz fest with the Flectones. "Sinister Minister" is just a kickin piece of work. -RHS

I cannot remember for the life of me the current bass player for King Crimson, but I saw them at a rehersal right before they went out this past year. Amazing guy. He played two chapman sticks. One up on a bar stool, and the other one he had strapped on. Playing bass lines with one hand while playing leads with his other hand on the other bass. Really amazing.
I love Dream Theater too. I would love to catch them live.

Isn't the Chapman Stick an all tapping bass?? Or what exactly is the Chapman stick?

StickWarrNot really. While they do make an essentially just bass model, its not the primary design. The Stick typically covers the range of guitar and bass. The standard is a 10 string model, with five strings for each range. The idea is that your right hand plays bass lines while your left does the higher range stuff. The Warr guitar is based on the same principle, but is more flexable and natural. I had a Stick for a while, but didnt play it much. I had wanted one so long that I had developed my own technique for playing like that on guitars and basses ... so when I finally got one, I didnt need it

The latest Drummers Collective DVD has a break w/ Vic Wooten playing solo on a 4-string bass. He tears it up, and plays his bass like a chapman stick.. its sick!
