Any way's what sticks do you all use?

I currently play Vater Power 5Bs and love them.

http://vater.com/newproducts/product.cfm?M=9

I was playing Vic Firth 2Bs for a long time then they decided to change the shape of the stick which made me seek other options. They thinned down the area closer to the tip dramatically. You can tell it is a whole different manufacturing they are doing now also. I had both of the new and old side by side and the difference was dramatic. The new one also did not seem to be as well built - really looked cheaper. I was a die hard user of VF for almost 20 years so it was a bit of a shock ...lol!

I really was opting for a slightly thinner stick than the 2B I was using so I  tried the Vic Firth Extreme 5BN and the Vater Power 5BN which both are beefed up and extended models of the standard 5B model sticks. I prefered the Vater sticks due to the slightly shorter taper which leaves a little more meat towards the tip. My sticks tend to get chewed up about 2 inches from the tip due to my 15 inch hats and crashing so this is a benefit for me. Also the Vater Power 5Bs just simply felt better to me. They do make a very high quality product and I am very satisfied with the switch I made.

Below you can see the differences in the models:

Vater Power 5BN
VHP5BN
L 16 1/2"  D .610"

Vic Firth Extreme 5BN
X5BN
L 16 1/2"  D .595"

For sticks my two faves (depending on what I'm playing) are the Ahead 5Bs (mostly for rock) and Buddy Rich model Vic Firth sticks (mostly for hi-speed and/or jazz). Rods, metal brushes, plastic brushes, mallets and rubber coated Johnny Rabbs make up my stash of light work and special effects stuff.

The Zildjian 5A Anti Vibes work best for me. The 5B version is snagged for some slower stuff. But recently I've just kept my hands on the 5As most of the time as the all around perfect stick for me. I used to play with the left one backward but would break the barrel and the rubber vibe-thing would come out.

I'm really not picky ... long as they say "Vater" on them.   Grin

Seriously, I agree with Drummz about the Power 5B's.  The Power 5A is nice too.  They both give a little extra reach.

But I also like alot of Vater's other sticks and I've been experimenting alot lately to see what suits me best.  I'm finding myself more and more comfortable with a larger stick.

Among their signature sticks, I like the Josh Freese H-220, the Virgil Donati "assault stick" and the David Silveria DSK.

I also like their Rock and Pro-Rock and the Universal.

Solid, beautifully balanced sticks that feel comfortable in my hands and sound great hitting my drums.

Silver Fox Percussion FL-5B's THe greatest wooden sticks anywhere. These things have lasted me for many sets. I typically break my snare stick at least once a night from rim shots. These have lasted for 5 rehearsals and 4 gigs. I absolutely love them.

I have a pair of them (5B) that I bought out of curiosity.  They're tough alright.  And well worth the price (about the cost of two ordinary pairs of sticks), considering how long they're gonna last.  Problem is that they just don't feel right to me for some reason. But if you like them, then that's all that matters. They're sure to outlast ALOT of wooden sticks.

It's great to have several pair of them, and swap them out between songs, so that they share the wear and tear. Keep rotating between them, and they'll last for ages.  I keep three pair of 3A's and three pair of 5B's in my stickbag, and then I'm usually set for months.

Zildjian Ian Wallace signature is my current favorite, although it's discontinued.  It's basically a 5A with a fusion bead.
I also like the Regal Tip 5A wood tip for heavier playing--it has a larger bead than the Zildjian stick.
For pad work I like either a VF SD1 combo or a VF 2B.
It seems to make the practice session much more productive when I use a bigger stick.

my ultimate favourite sticks are the vic firth buddy rich signature's. I'm not into things like ahead or carbosticks... it just isn't wood?! if you sit and hold one of these types of sticks, it just doesn't feel right. wood is where it's at, and it's where it's been since the beginning of drumming.

deary me, wots wrong with the really cheap ones, yes they might snap quickly but its better than paying a fortune for some posho ones, and after all you dont really notice whether your playing with 5b's or 5a's in a gig, do you.
