 Shocked Hey guys, its really weird, im back to the bass pedal. Ive been playing drums for years and years, yet ive only just changed me bass pedal technique??I now sit lower on the throne and use my whole leg. Where as I used to use just my ankle?now I feel I have more control with harder hits, it feels weird but hopefully ill get used to it??? I used to watch the videos of travis barkers leg bouncing up and down and wondered...why doesnt mine do that???
has any one else come across the same things or problem?

I use three different techniques when playing the kick drum.

1) Heel down for slow, solid grooves and/or for quiet playing.

2) Heel up using ankle pivot for fast, syncopated grooves and/or quiet to medium loud playing.

3) Heel up using entire leg (and some ankle pivot) for fast, syncopated grooves that need to be LOUD. I also use this technique when I need to play louder than I can with technique number 1 or 2.

I have an in depth article on my web site that I think explains basic kick drum pedal technique very well. Even though I wrote the article, I think it's pretty good ... if I do say so myself. LOL

I think that it's good to evaluate you technique and make minor (sometimes major) adjustments ... stemming from set-up changes, posture changes, and ergonomic awareness. It's not a problem that you are having ... I think it's a necessary adjustment on your part, based on what you need to achieve musically & comfortably.

hey bart, I noticed something. when I started drumming I played everything heel down (I still do most of the time), but I noticed that I automatically lifted my heel a bit for some faster doubles/triples etc, and raising the leg for the really loud/fast stuff (takes away balance though Sad ). I wonder why it developed that way, because I didnt actually work it out. Maybe you have some cool biological explenation for it Wink
