Mrs. Dog and I had a chance to see the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under the leadership of Wynton Marsalis last night. The president of my company had tickets and couldn't attend--his loss, our gain! The truly great thing was that Marsalis didn't dominate the show. As a matter of fact, he only carried a few solos. The rest of the time, the solo load was spread evenly among all the members of the band. Herlin Riley was fun to watch behind a tiny little Mapex set. He's a wizard--and he makes it look so very effortless. During the curatin call, he ended up playing the music stand that his charts were on. Thinking of Mr A, I've been to Google already and have a link for anyone who wants to know a little more. http://www.jazzatlincolncenter.org/jazz/arti/lcjo/index.asp

Did Herlin do any of that metric modulation I mentioned in this thread? http://community.drummercafe.com/index.php?board=8;action=post;threadid=7188;quote=81989;title=Post%2Breply;start=0;sesc=3b775e6681359343741f5dc57c36ee03I actually went up and spoke breifly to him once when Wynton brought him to Augusta GA. I told him I really enjoyed his playing and I really liked it when he would be doing a fill, and I would lose the "one" and he'd come right in on it. He just kinda looked at me, nodded, and said uh-huh. I sometimes think I come on too strong talking to drummers after the gig. Rod Morgenstein kinda looked at me fuuny when I asked him about other drummers.

that orchestra gets raves, even though a lot of keith jarrett types go on an on about how they're stuck in a bygone era.
i give wynton props for wanting to engage and educate people on american history. and even though i lean toward branford's style of playing, i think wynton's a real talent and a real hoot.
ain't lincoln center purty?

lol, yea, no idea why they'd build a mall in NYC, but heck, i guess if you're gonna put one up, might as well do it, where it has an amazing view... btw, my friend who works for Bovis, the contractor company that put up the Time Warner Center, said that if you live in one of the multi-million dollar apartments, you can *order* down from any of the stores, and have it sent up that day. oi vey...

re:THE MALL - it's one thing when you don't have a "downtown" where you can walk from store to store, but I mean Keeripes that's what NYC is all about. It's bad enough that they're turning SoHo and Times Square into mall equivalents, but now to put a mall in?
The Whole Foods in the lower level is fun, but it's way more crowded than the 7th Ave (and original) branch.
Jon Faddis and Todd Coolman seem to be hinting at getting the funding necessary to re-form the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra. They were disbanded a little over a year ago when Carnegie Hall cut their funding (after they got a new Director). A little more cutting edge and less "repertory" group than LCJO.

interesting. i remember seeing an article in the times about faddis getting fired up over the types of acts they were going to bring [good ones]. didn't realize they'd gotten the axe. didn't that new director die like a month after he was on board? maybe i'm thinking of another company. as for malls and food and stuff, i'm a block away from a really nice whole foods market in greenwich, ct. it's so dang expensive, but the chow really rocks. talk about a great fruit and veggie selection...

eh, any jazz orchestra would be more cutting edge than a band under Wynton's direction. but ya gotta admit, he knows how to fire up a mean swing from a band. would love to see a double bill with the LCJO and Steve Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra w/ their '30s Kansas City style swing. a real shame that the other orchestra's that make up NYC's finest dont tour as often. besides Steve's great band, there's also the Mel Lewis' founded Village Vanguard Orchestra, and of course, Sue Mingus' Mingus Big Band downstairs @ the Fez. definitely worth a listen if they make it out to your local parts.

I've seen the LCJO a few times on television, but never live. They always remind me mostly of the old Ellington band. My own preference always leans more toward Basie.
I'd like to see Wynton do some more modern stuff with that band. He seems to utterly dismiss any musical ideas that cropped up after 1960, and that's disappointing. Only exception to this I've seen was their arrangement of Coltrane's take on "My Favorite Things." A nice chart, but performed as if it were 1945.
