I was over at my friend's house on friday night. He's a pretty good drummer and quite a hitter. So of course we spent the evening listening to his snare drum collection, trading licks and in general just giving his drumset a good kicking while the girls were boozing it upstairs.
Anyways he has these really heavy sabians hanging all over the place and every time I would go to hit one of them it was like my stick would bounce off of it! It got to the point where he was totally laughing at me cause I would hit the things...stop...try another fill, hit the cynbal a little harder...hit it harder etc. By the time that thing would go off (and man did it ever) I felt as if I was putting my whole arm into the thing.
Do I need to start lifting weights or something? What is up with such heavy cymbals? I mean I play paiste sigs with guys that have 100 watt amps and those things can also keep up with my drums.

Yes you're a Wimp, lol Just kidding, I play Sigs too, it might have been the angle the cymbal was in or you're just acustom to your cymbals and not having to beat the crap out of them to get a good sound. Just My two Pennies.

What about the size of the stick?
Some people are heavy hitters ... so the cymbals he has work for him. Personally, I don't like the sound (typically); I haven't played them all ... so I can't make a blanket statement. To me, they usually sound too clangy, plus you have to really hit them (like you said) in order to get any quality sound from them.
It's all about taste and the genre of music you play I guess.
Paul Liem uses a 20 inch crash as his main crash ... and it sits right above his hihat and first tom. It explodes and sounds great ... and it's loud ... but you don't have to pound on it to get it to respond.

He sets them up horizontal (couldn't you guess)...but he actually plays a pretty light stick...I think it was a vater fusion, but I can't remember. Not really heavier than mine...just a little shorter with a fatter bead.
Kinda weird, but he's my friend and thinks my set ups are weird also...I wince when he plays me kit though...doesn't break or dent anything though...it's amazing.

Simple. Hollow out the sticks, almost to the tip, and fill them with lead shot. After cracking the cymbals, cratering the heads, and breaking a couple of mounts, they'll never call you a wimp again! Seriously, I hate overly heavy cymbals, too.

I've seen a few drummers with similar setups who slap the cymbals with the shoulder or the side of the stick, instead of the tip.

Personally, I never crash a cymbal with the tip of the stick; it's always the shoulder or shank of the stick. Using the tip of the stick would definitely sound wimpy (to my ears), and I dont' think Felix is doing that.

You are right Bartman as usual. yah, I always crash with the tip of my stick...right on the bow of the cymbal with my 7A hickory sticks I guess I'm not such a @$%# player after all. It looks like I have the Patton tour gig my friend has been threatening me with. Their new album is totally shreddin'- tough drum programming I have to play...I recorded a few of those tracks initially with an acoustic kit for the "Red Pirahna" project and this what morphed from that. Pretty cool....Silver Bullet records, Las Vegas- here I come. www.pattonrocks.com

LOL...androgenous gel???
So then I can get in touch with my feminine side?
Didn't mean it too sound like a slur against gals...but I can't make everyone happy all the time.
Those things are manhole covers...he's was telling me this weekend how he's going to thinner cymbals. I didn't disagree.

Androgel is a testosterone replacement for older guys who go through "male menopause." Get it? A little andro, and you can butch up to those cymbals? Never mind I think I qualify...people who havn't seen me in a while are alway commenting on all the darn gray hair I have. Actually I am just trying to play with minimal body movement now as economically as possible. It's kinda fun...it's like my new "thing"...to look like a robot while playing drums.
