My first daytime stop on the tour, and I visited 2 stores in Champaign, IL today to see their head inventory:
Skins & Tins - a VERY cool drum shop - had a TON of Remo heads in backstock, and a healthy supply of Evans heads out front with some Aquarians and literally 6 Attack heads, probably 800 heads altogether. The percentages are roughly 65% Remo, 30% Evans and about 5% Aquarian.
Pro Sound/Music Shoppe has a decent drum department, maybe 150-200 heads. 50% Remo & 50% Evans, with 3 genuine Premier marching heads for good measure. No Aquarian or Attack.

More head ratios to report: Drum Center of Indianapolis: A healthy supply of heads on display, about 40% Remo, 35% Evans, 30% Aquarian. Musician's Pro shop (or something like that) in Iowa City: maybe 40 heads on display, 55% Remo, 45% Evans. And although I normally don't, I was forced to go to a Guitar Center in Chicago to pick something up. VERY surprised to see only a couple of Remo pre-packs on display, while Evans and Aquarian enjoyed a 50/50 split among the 200 or so heads on the floor! They even had some Attack heads. While I'm sure there were Remo heads in stock, there were precious few to be found where customers could see or access them. On a side note re Chicago, there are apparently only 2 shops in town. Frank's is gone, there's a sort of high-end/vintage shop with a Michigan Ave address, and Andy's supposedly converted from a music store to a drum shop, but was closed Monday when I needed them.

Bermuda, I noticed Al's comming though Atlanta in a few weeks. If you have a chance, drop by "Atlanta Pro Percusison" if you need to continue your research. Its on the north end of town.
If you need directions, pm me.

I stopped by Andy's Music, cool shop on Belmont in Chicago. I think they've picked up (somewhat) where Frank's left off, although there's not nearly the history.
Heads: maybe about 4-500, looked like 50% Remo, 30% Evans, 20% Aquarian. And instead of being separated by brand, they were grouped first by size, with the brands essentially scattered throughout. Sorta cool, come to think of it, definitely allows quick comparisons and lets the buyer see immediately if the favorite brand exists in certain sizes (as opposed to looking at a block of one brand, and reading labels one by one.)
And of course, I bought a cymbal while there: a 15" 60s Zildjian crash... very sweet it's # 196 for me!)

More head percentages, Appleton, WI (Green Bay metro)...
Heid Music: About 250 heads, 70% Remo, 15% Evans and 15% Aquarian.
Island Music: maybe 100 heads... 90% Evans, 10% Remo (no Aquarian.)
Henri's Music: About 300 heads, an almost even split, slightly less Aquarians: 35% Remo, 35% Evans, 30% Aquarian.
I realize that my 'reports' are coming in fairly infrequently, considering that I'm in 5 different cities each week. I'm visiting every music store & drum shop that I can, and not being selective or omitting results that may not support Evans' numbers. The fact is, I just don't have the kind of access to transportation that would allow me to explore further. In some places, I'm not around long enough to get out and look around. But whenever I have friends who offer to run me around, or there's a store within walking distance, I'll go there and make notes.
In about 3 weeks when I haved a chance to breathe, I'll sort out the results and, if it's not obvious already, put to rest the notion that Evans' market share is small, dwindling, or that it poses no threat to Remo.

There used to be one in Buckhead, but its not there anymore. The one I'm referring to is about 15mins north of buckhead in Marietta. Its a pretty good-sized store. They have a good selection of used cymbals & drums, and from the looks of things they have a big stock of Remo & Evans. I think the url is www.atlantapropercussion.com. Let me know if you need more info or directions. - Jason

More head percentages, Tallahassee FL -
Music Xchange: About 150 heads, 60% Remo, 40% Evans.
Music Market (I think that's the name...) - about 300 heads: 75% Remo, 20% Evans, 5% other. There were a few interesting finds (they had recently absorbed another store that was in business for 40 years)... they had some genuine Premier, 70s Ludwig, and even about a dozen Duraline Kevlar heads, still sealed! (Note that the Duralines hadn't been in production since about 1987.) No Aquarian however.

Hey Bermuda, sorry to hijack the this topic for a brief moment....I figure you'd visit this thread first the next time you had a chance.
I didn't see anyone mention this, but if you would please send our condolences to Al.
