Very cool! I dug your theme-and-development stuff, and that's a great sounding drum.

Now I wanna hear you play that whole crazy-looking kit!   Grin

I just found out most of the recordings I'm on were actually played by Bernard Purdie.

I just wanted to thank Bartman for all the great work that he's done on the Drummers for Jesus website. I don't know if everyone knows that not only did he PLAY and TEACH at the event in Dallas back in March, but he's also the website designer for DFJ site. So, everyone should check out the NEW video clips that Bart put up on the site. Great job man!!! Can't wait to see what's coming next - Carlos Benson, Director, Drummers for Jesus Int'l

Groovin' on "Cissy Strut"!

Here's an excerpt from my solo composition, Heavy Revie, which I mentioned earlier in more detail.

The clip starts out with some of the opening free form stuff, playing various percussion effects, moving to the frame drum for more quasi-groove playing. I then move to using Blasticks, playing the set-up like a drumkit, outlining the shuffle groove which plays across the 5/4 & 9/8 (ostinato) bars. Lastly the clip shows me going into the duple feel, playing across the 5/4 & 9/8 bars ... then into more free soloing.

This clip is over 6Mb and two minutes in length ... so if you don't have broadband, you may not want to attempt to view it.

For more details about what I played and the instrumentation used, check out my early post by clicking here. Sorry I couldn't post the entire piece, but it was nearly 10 minutes in length ... plus it's always better live!  Wink

Carlos/Bart,

It would be cool if there was a list of recommended recordings for the various drummers that were there.  Some of them can be figured out by closely reading the bios and doing some web-diving, but I'm lazy and I'm not sure on some of them that they played on certain CD's.  Even better, if they suggested some stuff themselves.

I'd like to support these drummers whenever I can.  I've ordered a Kirk Whalum DVD which I'm hoping that Sean plays on.

Well ... Modern Drummer magazine finally reported about the event. Check out the August 2004 issue ... pages 157 and 158.

I've got to find a way to get myself to the next DFJ event.  I'm sure it would help me and inspire me in my role as a drummer in a worship band.  Maybe it is a misperception on my part, but I sometimes feel as if the drummer is treated as the least important member of a contemporary Christian worship band, and as if they are really not "musicians" in the true sense.
