That Koo-koo Mutt Lang!  Producing AC/DC, Def Leppard, marrying Shania Twain...  that is an unusual career path!   Grin

I thought it was the chef dude from the old Muppets TV show counting off... Smiley

Whatever anybody does, don't do what our guitar player does for a straight 4 song...counts it on the off-beats.  He says "1-2-3-4", but he's "meaning/feeling" the "+"'s.  I always wondered why we never started together...

Huh  Are you kidding me?  Sheesh, is he trying to mess people up?

I think I'll click off all our songs at tonights rehearsal using the 5 against 4 method.  I'll count off 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a...    Grin

I just yell "1! 2! 3! 4!" as loud as I can, accompanied by smacking the cowbell really hard.  It reminds everyone who's in charge, especially when I'm stuck at the back of the stage.

It's a little rough when the song's in 3 or if it doesn't start on 1, but what the heck.

On a more serious note, Themudlark, why is it stupid to count 1-2-3-4-5 to start a song in 5/4?

how about those four hissy scratchy noises at the beginning of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song!  This may be a vinyl LP feature only, but I knew what it was just by those four hisses.

Don't forget that you can use visual cues as well. There have been a few times with various pieces that I've needed to give whoever was starting the song a visual signal of what I felt the tempo should be...in which case I would tap the stick on my leg or chest or whatever and they could look around, get it, and take it or leave it. I also once angled a metronome so the bass player could see the flasher.

A particularly good method to use when playing something live which doesn't fit with an audible count-off is to pat your head in time and alternate to your forehead for the downbeats....then the audience and band members can all look at you and get themselves situated to your space in time.

A bit of everything. We all know the songs and know our starts so we can keep our live act fluent. I hate the 1234 start and i'm sure the audience would if every song stopped to wait for the drummer to 1234 again, unless the song calls for it. One we do is Heaven is a place on earth where i count 123 and 4 is a kick beat  to introduce the vocal. Eye contact and knowing where to come in together is the key. By using my Tempo ref i can control the tempo in the first 4 bars of any tune we do. I also refence the BPM on our set lists and most songs are now done at the right tempos without thinking. Great tool.
Guitarist starts a few, bass starts a few, vocalist starts a few and i have the pleasure of introducing songs such as :
I want you to want me Cheap Trick
Were not gonna take it Twisted Sister
Pretty Woman Roy Orbison
Down Under Men at Work etc, etc.
Quite often as a song finishes i will start playing straight into the next song and after 4 bars of drum rhythm the band have picked up and were into it. Helpful if the dance floor is full and you want to keep it that way. Wink

I tell my band that we're gonna start on like the count of 17, and I hit the sticks 17 times, and they lose count, and everyone's confused. It's pretty funny.
