I love the Drummer Cafe!

« on: April 28, 2004, 06:09 PM »

If you haven't noticed yet I am trying to liven up the percussion parlor ...  Grin

It seems most people here at the forum are drummers but not percussionists if you know what I mean. May be hand-percussionists would be better term ...  Huh.  There is not as much demand for conga or bongo players as there for drum set players.

As a result percussion parlor is much less active then other drum set parts of the forum, so I am forced to read new posts that I have nothing to do with ...  Huh  Grin Shocked Cool Roll Eyes  Angry Embarrassed Undecided Kiss Cry  (I get very emotional sometimes  Grin )

I don't know why I posted this ... waste of cyber space I guess ...

I LOVE both drums and percussion ... and play both ... and could never just do one or the other.

Got a new video clip from the DFJ event last month.

Here's a short improvised frame drum solo ... actually several minutes long ... recorded live last month. The performance is 2.5 minutes long, so the file size is 7.5Mb.

Same here.   Excellent clip by the way Bart.   Using a stand really frees up the hands doesnt it Smiley

And Fed, you can always start a hand drum only forum, no kit talk allowed.   Not sure if itd get more traffic than this, but Id join Smiley

I have a question about Barts frame drum solo:
Is the fade out in the end played or made by editing...?

Bart...?
oh... and what kind of drum is that exactly??

For the record ... I REALLY want to develop the percussion forum here! I play percussion equally as much as the drums ... and I love both.

I almost created an entire section, just as big as the current size of the Drummer Cafe, but would only be for percussion. Unfortunately, I tried this on a smaller scale, and it never took off. So, this board is my token attempt.

We can build this up guys/gals. I've been disappointed with the other percussion forums ... which usually die off ... or get so bad that I don't want to stay (like many drum forums out there).

There more we discuss and talk here, the more momentum will be gained ... and the more interest will be generated. If you want it, you're going to have to put time into it.

So ... help me build it up here ... or start your own percussion exclusive forum.

If the interest and content grows to where we need more space, I'll definitely be expanding our parlor ... knocking out a few walls and do some remodeling.

NOT a fade out by editing ... I played the fade. Some people call it dynamics.  Wink  Sorry couldn't resist.

The drum is a bodhran ... an Irish drum typically played with a small stick called a tipper. I have the drum tuned high so that it resembles an African frame drum. The bodhran has a wood cross piece which allows me to mount it on a snare stand ... thus freeing my hands and feet to do whatever I want.

I'll post a clip of me playing that whole set-up, which will make sense to you once you see it. The frame drum clip (above) is just a spontaneous, improvised solo. At the end of my seminar, Carlos asked me to play for a few more minutes ... and the solo you saw was a result of that.

Drummer Cafe' is the best forum of any forum I've found! There's another conga/Latin drumming forum I'm on, but it's really slow.. Not enough folks to really get discussions going.

Thanks Bart for the Percussion section!
I'm not shy, so sometimes I venture into the other forums and get myself into trouble  Wink

I'm thinking of starting a new thread here about palm-touches. After Fed's post I went back to the Mambo rhythm I never really developed very well due to clutzy left hand stuff...
More practice!!

Ok,
first of  if I have said ... "dinamics in the end of a clip" that wouldn't sound right. If I have said ... "what about that diminuendo..." that could have been wrong term alltogether  Grin

so I think fade-out is a acceptable compromize.

I suspected that it was played but didn't want to stick my neck out and be wrong.

Just want to say it's things like that that separate the "sheep from the goats" or pros from the ammatures ... I realy apriciate the hand control that it takes to do that.

SECOND: I really have NO PROBLEM with percussion parlor or DC, I just felt like mopping or may be couldn't find better subject to discuss... hence my comment about wasting cyber space.

So far I got great answers to questions I had, there are certainly a lot of knowlegable  and expirienced people here at the forum so in short ... there is nothing to complain about really ...

so STOP telling me to go away and start my own forum... I am not going anywhere...  Angry Cool Roll Eyes Grin Embarrassed  Grin (see I am all emotional  again now...  Grin)

P.S just in case... some of the above was in silly kind of "ha-ha" tone  Tongue I am not angry or anything. Sometimes I hate to comunicate through the forums

Oh ye ... Bart thanks for your answers and I realy apriciate your great contributions to this forum not to mention starting it up in the first place.
Still waiting for that video lesson by the way ... hopefully it will come today.

Hey Fed ... I'm just razzing you as well ... and all in a joking tone.

I'm glad you are here, and I'm glad everyone else is here too!

But seriously, if someone started a percussion forum, I would support it ... assuming it's more than what the current forums are offering.

We'll keep building the community and content here ... and see what happens. So far, I think we have a great start. There are some really knowledgeable Latin percussionists here ... and I love learning new things. I'm a gringo, so the Latin drumming vibe was not part of my heritage or environment where I grew up.

Similar to a lot of you guys, I play and love both drums and percussion.  In fact, tonight I get to do both on the same gig.

Now, I'm going to go check out Bart's bodhran solo.  Smiley

Though most of you guys are into hand drums and drumset stuff, I also like to do mallet work. Stuff like vibraphone is almost essential in a big band and Jazz group but usually there isn't a vibraphonist but if their is they'd probably love to have one play for them. I would like to become at least reasonable at this, so Gigs would be easier to find and it would help me as a percussionist. I am playing mostly marimba right now and I'm learning alot, It's really fun!

Perc only for me. Started out when the percussionist, an excellent conga player, said the song needed shaker and conga and threw one of his shakers at me.  2 years later, I now have almost as many toys as he does!

 Cheesy

well here is one I only play percussion I have congos, bongos, dembe, dumeck and cow bells, temple blocks, as well as all the shakers, clava and a heap of other gear, and I for one don't really think a dummer makes a good percussionist. it's a different way of thinking.
