I read Emil Richards' perc. collection exceeds 600 pieces. Airtos' fills 2 warehouses. So whats in your collections, do you have a method to your madness?

My collection is small, but varied. And thats an illustration of my method actually. Get what I dont have before I get something similar to what I do have. But in contrast to that, I have been working on building my frame drum collection specifically recently.
I dont have my collection on my site yet, so I'll toss together a quick list: congas (10 and 11"), 11" dumbek, 8" darabouka w/ jingles, tabla, 16" frame drum, 18" bohdran, 12" bowl gong that I use as a metal frame drum, 13" terra cotta "frame" drum.
I will be adding a 14" bendir and a kanjira to the collection next month.

Compared to lot of people, I don't have a lot ... and I'm always looking for more. But marriage and kids has a way of reducing the funds for such investments. The good news ... it's a business write-off. I won't list my gear as you can see it here: http://bartelliott.com/equipment.html

Hollow a log into a drum. It's the space inside that makes the sound.

I collect switchblade knives. By collecting it means I keep them pristein and do not use 'em, just have them there to look at, maybe flick open once in a while.
My drums are all for playing, so I don't think of them as a collection, but I do have more than I need, so maybe truthfully I do have a collection.
I have 3 gon bops, 1 Valjie, 3 skin on skin, and 2 Sol congas. I got a homemade djembe, a set of Valjie bongos, and a talking drum, plus various shakers and bells etc. My most unusual is probably the 16" Sol 'titantic'. I am considering getting a couple Sol Afro 40" tall drums too, but to justify it I should sell something, but I don't want any of them to go I like 'em all.
I also have 3 drumsets, two that I use all the time, and an old set in the closet (just 3 snare drums). I'm embarassed to say how many cymbals I own.

I seem to have a three item purchase method, one I'm trying to break.
It works this way.
I decide I want a particular kind of drum/percussion item.
I buy something stupid, because I'm ignorant. Now, I need to buy something else.
So, I buy something better. But, as I get into it, I realize the serious players buy something else. Now, I need to buy something else.
Step three - I finally buy the right drum/percussion instrument for the job.
So, I end up with three of everything. Can somebody help me next time?

Quintos and bongos, though I have all I need now so I've stopped aquiring. Quinto: 9" L.P.patato super quinto, 9 3/4" Bauer 10 1/2" gon bop 11" Bauer. conga: 11 3/4" Bauer. tumbas:12 1/2" Bauer 13 1/2" Valje. I use various combinations of these drums to fit the music. Bongo: 6"& 7 1/2"Bauer, 7"& 8 1/2"Sol perc. 7"& 9" afro/pearl. very different character and sounds from these sets. Brazilian sounds (this is endless!) 4 quicas, all different sizes, Izzo tamborim and pandeiros, Gope atabaque (47"tall!) reco reco, triangle, blocks, bells and whistles! 4 shekeree homemade in different sizes with very different sounds...I only buy or keep what I really play, there are so many great sounds to make !

My "toy collection" phase has come and gone - I still keep an eye open for new "toys" (literally and figuratively), but nothing like when I was in college. All you had to do back then was HINT that the local import shop had a new berimbau in stock, and I'd be in the car headed downtown with checkbook in hand... I sense a cymbal phase coming on, but for the past year or so, it has been...well, if you've been anywhere near a regular visitor to the Cafe, you know what my weakness has been...each one has a shell, two heads (including a thin one on the bottom), and these metal or cable things stretched across the bottom...and they come in all shapes and sizes... http://www.malletjazz.com/snaresAnd no, you can NEVER have enough of them! LOL
