hello, everyone -- i just registered and did a search for info on beginner equipment.  i got some good leads, but i have a specific question about the pearl rhythm traveller set.  would it be a decent starter set (now on sale for $300), or is it one to avoid?

thanks for the input!

One of my previous drum teachers swore by these little kits...he has a remo one and basically played jazz and wedding gigs.

I think you will like them to develop your chops and gig with.  I also think you might become disappointed in the tone as your ear develops for certain situations requiring sonic "girth" "phatness" or all those other adjectives.

My advice is find a used 5 piece ludwig for the same price if you can.  I think everyones' first kit should be a Ludwig.

felix thanks for weighing in!

i've kept my eyes open for used kits for a couple of months now, and nothing has turned up.  one of the disadvantages of living in a small town, i guess.  so i'm thinking about alternatives.

if a pro uses them and is satisfied with them (for certain applications), they'd probably be fine with me.  at least for a while.

i just don't want to buy something that is going to start falling apart in a month or so of light use.

thanks  again.

If you are using it for Jazz or something light like that, it is a great little kit.  But if you are using it for something you are going to be hitting a little harder on, you might want to try something a little more sturdy.  My Church has one of these, that I have plyed on a few times.  sounds pretty good on the lighter stuff, with the right heads on it.  I just stuck some coated Remo Ambassadors on the toms and the snare and a Powerstroke 3 on the kick.

I agree with Brent- a church I used to go to used the REMO versions and they sounded great though I don't recal the heads being used- probably Remo Pinstripes all around with coated ambassador on the snare.  As for heavier playing it depends on you- I felt confident that I could have played them significantly harder than I was but all of this is relative.  They may be a kit you keep for ever if you are a packrat but eventually I forsee you behind (or inside perhaps) drums that will give you more depth and hardware you can climb yourself out from behind the kit with-lol.
Check the various ebay type places- take a visit to a larger city and check out drum shops- they often sell used stuff too- but if that all doesn't work you'll like the Pearls.

I strongly disagree.  Would you care to explain?

No one understands you, felix. Roll Eyes

Even though Ludwig has gone the way of the Far East, Ludwig was always the American standard before all the rest. The patriarch, William F. Ludwig, and the tradition of it all.

Haskall Harr book, a pair of 5A's, and your trusty Ludwigs. aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

...the equivalent of baseball, mom, and apple pie

Let a guy indulge in some short-hand reminiscing without taking every word literally!  Smiley
