I was just wondering what the sound characteristics are for Remo's CS Black Dot heads. I am looking into trying them as batter heads on my toms and I would like some sound description as well as some opinions on these heads as tom heads.

i use these on my large zickos acrylic toms. i have them on a 10x14 and an 18x18. they provide a thuderous (not a typo!) rackety sound that just sounds like ROCK to me.

i have a very short mp3 snippet that includes a tom fill near the end. you can hear it for yourself. (2 mic drum recording)

They will definatly give you that classic booming "Thundering Rock" sound.
They were staples in the 80's for alot of cats.
I have deepshell racks and when I put the BlackDots on there they just sound "meaty, beaty, big and bouncy"!
The kind of sound you feel in the 3rd row.
The smaller rack toms ( 10 and under ) they tend to give a tad more ringy-ness (?)  than I care for, but a piece of gaffers tape ( Duct tape ) on there settles it down rather quick. The bigger racks (15-18) tend to get a little boomy so I use a dampening ring that is cut from an old head to control that when I need to.
Your choice of reso heads will make a diffrence on how they sound as well.
I use the Evans clear hydraulic for the classic sounds, but switch to standard remo 1 ply reso for most middle of the road stuff.

They will definatly take a beating where the dot is and will last for a while, but the head outside the dot gets marked up pretty quickly if you miss the sweet spot. Also once there is a big divot in there..just go get another head...they will not sound right and you will want to slash your wrists trying to get a good sound out of a divotted head.
YMMV

I'd like to echo what the others have said and also add that they are extremely easy to tune.  I like them a lot.  They work well for me with or without bottom heads.  Also to luvmyleedy:  I clicked the link to see your kit and those are gorgeous!

What are CS's like for bass drum batters? Especially in situations where you bury the beater and rest it there.

I prefer Aquarian's version of the dotted heads on my toms - the Classic Clear with Power Dot heads.

The dots on Aquarians are made from some fiber that does not dent, which means the heads last a LOOOOOONG time. And they're loud as hell. I use them for rock gigs, with either a clear or coated 1-ply head on the bottom.

On the bass drum, I've used Remo and Aquarian dot heads, but MUCH prefer the Aquarian Impact I for my batter head. I bury the beater too, so I use an Aquarian Kick-Pad to increase the head's durability. I've had the same batter head on my main bass drum now for several years, so these things DO work!  Remo makes a similar pad that works well, too.

But I think the muffling on heads like the Impact, Superkick, or Evans E-mad is superior to the dot heads for bass drums.
