Yes that drumlooney!!

« on: December 16, 2002, 01:43 PM »

Hey, all you guys might have noticed that I have'nt posting too much lately that's b/c I hurt my back pretty bad.  At first it was believe that it was a herniated disc but now they are thinking it may be ruptured, if it is(waiting for the reslults of the MRI) it will require surgery.  Has anyone gone through this before?  Is the surgery worth it?  My understanding is that there is a slight risk of paralysis.  This is the third time this has happened to me in the last 2 years and I'm only 30.

Any feed back would be appreciated.

I have two herniated discs. I was also facing surgery.  It doesn't work for everyone, but, I figured if I was going to get cut open I may as well try a chriopractor first. In my particular case I was able to be cracked back into normalcy in no time...too bad I spent 4 months in unforgiving holy pain before I tried.  I have to keep going to visit him every now and then as the condition returns from time to time, however, this is a better option to me than paying a lot of money for no guarantee that I'll feel better and may end up worse off than before.  Then again, I know other people who have had the surgery and reported instant relief...each case is different.

I have been blessed with a pretty strong back although my feet and knees are a different story.

Hang in there, we all have our little things in life to deal with .

Peace

DON'T go to a chiropractor w/ a RUPTURED disc! Herniated disc, maybe, but not ruptured.  Anyone going into any kind of surgery will have to sign a form basically acknowledging that terrible things could happen--paralysis, death, etc etc. These things can and do happen, VERY rarely. I've been involved w/ a number of back surgeries, and all have gone well. Make sure you go to a good surgeon, whether neurosgn or orthopedic sgn. Find out how many surgeries just like yours he/she has done. Go on line and research it so you understand exactly what happens w/ this kind of surgery. Not sure about sgy for ruptured vs. herniated disc, but oftentimes microsurgery can be done, w/ a smaller incision, meaning less pain and quicker recovery.
Most importantly, you now have a back problem.  This means that you will ALWAYS have a back problem. Surgery will take away the pain, but you should, for the rest of your life, be careful w/ what you lift, and learn to lift properly (ie, from the legs, never bending over to pick something up). Even  when you feel good and are healed up, don't be careless w/ your back.
My youngest laminectomy patient was 24 (I dated him briefly after he was discharged Roll Eyes. He did just fine w/ surgery and you will too.  Smiley

Iv'e just been told my spine has aged 10 years ahead of my time (42)via xrays. I have degeneration, osteophytes and disc height loss in my neck. It is a common condition but mine is advanced to an earlier life of hard knocks.
Physiopheraphy, anti inflamatries and muscle relaxants have enabled me to loosen up and keep drumming as i was getting knotted muscles and soreness and tense.
Is there anything else other than watch what i do not to agrivate anything such as diet, supplements, etc to control pain and tension? Iv'e been told Yoga is beneficial?

The best thing you can do is see a chiropractor.

Drumlooney, how is your back?  What was ever diagnosed and how was it treated?  I just ran across this thread after all this time.

I had a herniated disk in November and went to a physical therapist for about 6 weeks.  The guy was really helpful and taught me exercises to prevent/relieve pain if it happened again.  I had an episode of it returning after helping someone move to a new house.  I did the exercises over the course of the next day and it went away before getting very painful.  It has never come back again (yet!), and I haven't exactly refrained from lifting stuff!  I do use a better throne now (Roc-N-Soc with backrest) and have the back support on my truck seat adjusted way up.

I hope it is better now.

Hey drumnDad,

Well unfortunately I was doing pretty good and then one day I could'nt move again, a piece of my disk was pinching one of my nerves, I had laser surgery done and it has seemed to have worked.  I'm even back at the gym lifting and playing basketball.  Thanks for asking.  by the way the funny thing is that every time I hurt my back it was doing routine things like opening a door and believe it or not sneezing, it was never lifting anything heavy or playing the drums, lol.

several years ago i fell at the top of a flight of steps and landed on the edge of one straight on my spine.  i then slid down the rest of the steps on my back.  ever since i've had back problems.  sometimes i'll sit down and i'll get a sudden immense rush of pain and have to go lay down for the rest of the day.  it hasn't happened in awhile, but it's still painful when do alot of lifting or walking.

About 3 years ago i sneezed a ruptured disk,
had surgery, and everything went perfectly.
The only advice i have for anyone reading this is, soul search and pray.
Also my doc. explained to me that if i didn't therapy correctly after the surgery we were wasting our time and my $$$$. Did as doc. ordered all has been well.
Very painfull, couple of months. coudl'nt drum again for 3 months.

Sorry to hear about your back. I was in the boat with gdawson44 and I was put in traction for about two weeks the surgion said he didn't like operating in cases like this but it was up to me. I didn't like operating in any case, so I choose PH instead. After the PT. I was told to see a chiropractor for controll. He told me he could strenghten the muscles in the area of the problem to keep it from shifting when walking or if I should get bumped or jarred in  some manner. That was about fifteen years ago and I haven't had any problems as yet. Now and again I visit the Chiroprator for an ajustment and go on my way. Might be luck, but I don't think so. Decision must be your's and you have to live with it. Think it over carefully. Good Luck.

Hey all you people with bad backs ! Nice to meet you.

I just went thru back surgery on June 22 and i still have the stiches in to prove it..

I had a pinched nerve since 89 , The pain would come and go ,until recently,  while playing with my children . I was injured !

IT was the worst pain ive ever had. The leg was on fire from inside.

After an MRI showing that i had i large amount of disk buldging towards the stomach area and really giving the nerve the business.(pinchiing).

My operation was  a laminectomy and then removal of large CHUNKS as My doctor put it.    Im recovering , but im still on antibiotics (due to an infection or seeping of the wound) Im not able to drum yet and HAd to cancel everything for who knows how long.

I hope to be back on my feet soon and getting back to doing what i love.

Im able to walk now . WOOT! But im slow and still have loss of feeling in my left leg and loss of strength , (i was never good with the HAts anyway).

So now im teaching myself guitar.... I wanted to try bass , But felt i was too smart for that.  Smiley

I had a herniated disc between L4 and L5. I had a partial lamenectomy performed in June of 2001. It was partially successful, then it reherniated in December and was facing more surgery.

Being Mr. Mom at the time, surgery wasn't an option. Chiropractic treatment was a blessing. I was off Vioxx within two weeks and back to mostly normal activities in about 8 weeks. Still have a little loss of flexibility in my left leg but I'm working on it.

Do the surgery, make sure your doctor follows up with you after surgery. Make sure your doctor prescribes some physical therapy for you. Make sure you FOLLOW the therapy! Strengthen your core muscle structure or you'll be back in pain before you know it.

I am happy to be able to still drum, play with my kids, and generally enjoy life with only minimal discomfort.
