I will only drink after i am done playing of course. this is mostly during payed gigs and such. Drumming sober is so far the best thing i do so i am always a 100% and learning new things. Then i will have a drink and party it up.

Every time there is a thread like this, there are two options:

1)  Players do not play while under the influence and the thread turns into a soapbox.
2)  If players DO play under the influence and think they sound better, everyone will tell them there is no way they sound better and they only think they sound better.

I think it's interesting that, through articles I've read, Louis Armstrong was a heavy user of marijuana through his whole life as was Ray Charles.  I guess they would have been even better if they just stayed off the stuff. (?)

For the record, I play straight.  I played while smoking marijuana for years, and had enough compliments on my playing ability that I truly don't believe that playing under the influence had a negative effect.

I sure hope I can express an opinion like this without necessarily getting flamed.

I've rehearsed, written and performed on many different drugs and drug combinations. I will say that I did learn a lot by doing that, however, now that I have "gone straight" there is a marked improvement in all that I do, musically and everywhere else. Drugs (and alchohol is a drug) can open you to new possibilities, but they also numb you, slow you down and check you out. Assessment- I've no regrets, and I'm happy to be clean.

I'm surrounded by substance partakers all the time, while simultaneously having to stay straight since I'm a school teacher who needs the full bright eyed and bushy tailed version of me each and every day. It's a good reason to use for my always saying "no" and they respect that. I do believe the rest of the guys play better, longer, and with more positive vibe when they stay straight. However, up to this point the other guys are better players than me, so I they get no complaints from me.
Of course if I were ever to pass their abilities, my time with them would probably shorten substantially.  Roll Eyes

Anyway, I can't stand confessionals where everyone's "me too-ing", but yep,, it's odd to be on the other side of the substance fence. Yet have respect for their abilities.

Well, Im a pothead, and I must say every1 is different. Some people get all wierd (paranoid/quiet/whatever) but some people get focused. I smoke every day, even at work (sshhhh, dont tell) and I block out everything that isnt important, and kick ass at my job. I went from being a low paid machinist to a supervisor/CNC programmer/operator and the second highest paid guy in the shop in just 4 years. While playing drums isnt the same as my job, Im using it as an example of how it puts me in a groove where I can really be productive and focused. Now Im not saying that its impossible that I would get better being clean, but I feel it doesnt take away from what I do.

Just my opinion.

As far as drinking goes, I SUCK BAD if I drink. I wont drink until after were done.

I used to smoke a lot of weed when I was a lot younger. From my experience:
1) You may think you sound better than you really do. And blocking things out doesn't work on the bandstand when you have to be totally aware of everything happening around you. My experience is that cannabis (for all it's charms) is lousy for that awareness.
2) I would never ever ever ever ever want to be working in a machine shop stoned or near stoned people.

Everyone's different, but that's my experience. Once I gave up smoking, it was like someone lifted a heavy blanket off my head and gave me back a lot of my brainpower.

Precisely ... What people need to realise that when they speak their mind about this stuff, they are speaking only for themselves and what works/doesnt for them.

There is no rule that having three drinks makes you a useless sot.   Or that smoking anything on any occasion makes you imbecilic and disfunctional (dont forget nicotine is a sensory blocker).   Or that refraining from any of this makes you a better, more productive member of society or band.

Some people can make somethings work in their favor, some cant.  Some know how to deal with influential material, some don't.   What works or doesn't for one person doesn't mean that works or doesn't for someone else.

I never said I block out the other instruments, my focus is on the music as a whole.

I played stoned for the first time this past friday...

And I must say that I was impressed, I was with friends and I just started to play a beat, very simple, that sounds like "We will Rock you" and then we improvied for around 20mins around that beat.

It was just crasy, I never felt as much into the music, the guitarist also, he didn't do anything super hard to make but everything sounded so well, everything fitted and we both understood eachother so good, I made fills exactly at time same time that he changed riffs, it was just unbelievable.

I would never play a full gig stoned but to get new ideas/jamming for fun, maybe that sometimes, not always, a little "enhancement" can help. We didn't take a lot, only around .7G for 2...

But anyway, it was crasy Smiley

Great thread.  I prefer to not play on any drugs.  Pot throws off my timing-I usually chase the tempo if stoned.  It makes me feel like watching tv, and falling asleep on the couch!  As for booze-I have to admit, I prefer a couple of belts of Jack Daniels-but not 6 or 8 or 14 like I used to have.  A nip or two to take the edge off is all I like-

I've been on both sides of this. I used to drink and play on gigs all the time. Over the years I've virtually stopped drinking, so now I play sober 99% of the time. There is no question that for me, drinking screws up my timing and makes me get louder in proportion to the amount I drink.

A story - I still remember a night fifteen years ago when a singer (a good singer) in a local band got drunk on stage during the course of a gig. It was his birthday and everybody kept buying him shots, and God bless him, he kept drinking them.

He started out the night sounding fine. As the evening wore on, he got loud and flat, and by the last set he was just yelling, and gyrating around the stage like a transsexual Steve Tyler. It was embarrassing. He thought he was doing great, too. But he sucked SO BAD - well, I still remember it fifteen years later, that's how bad he sucked.

I look at it this way - if I went to hear chamber music and the violinist was half-bombed, I'd be pissed off. And we drummers use our LEGS, too. Violinists just stand there.

Don't you hate violinists?

I only play sober now. I used to play when I was on Speed, but that stopped as soon as I realized that I would be tense as all hell for really simple rudimentary things. But I was playing 32nd double bass patterns for about two hours though. (Felt like I'd ran a marathon!)
So don't do drugs! Ever! Even if they say that it'll make you fly like Superman! because it wont! On'y the best stuff can do that! And there isn't any! believe me! I've looked! And it's not even flying. It's more like hovering from one corner of the street to the next!

If your serious about your craft then booze and drugs should not be part of your evening or life style. One drink, okay maybe. Any more than that, pot included I would say no. If you do, I hope your the guy before or after me in the audition line.

Well, he's going to be the guy before or after you anyway, drunk, stoned or sober, if you're in the same audition line!!

I never touch any alcohol (I don't smoke at all) before playing.  It dehydrates you, fuzzies yer head up and saps your energy!

Drugs I don't do... about alcohol...
I personally never tried to play after drinking....Someone suggested it to me once , but from what I know alcohol affects coordination and coordination is oe of the main things you ned to play drums....So how alcohol improve your performance if it actually affects one of the main things needed for it...
I dunno maybe I'll try it once though....before practicing...

Hi, this is my first posting. I was hesitant about posting until one of you indicated that its okay to express your opinion. So here it goes. I play drums for the Spiritual HIGH. The high that only comes when you, the band and audience comes together in one mind, body and spirit. You know what I mean, "in the pocket", "Man, what a rush", "Dude, that rocks". Im too afraid that I would miss something if I where under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I only hope that Tylenol Arthritis Pain medicine doesnt mess me up. I play from week to week to experience those special moments because each is different and brings with it spiritual growth as a drummer and person.

Funny how this thread keeps resurfacing.

I can play on pot, booze, straight- whatever.  Doesn't make any difference to me.  It's still me playing.  I used to think I'll always play better cold sober- well, that hasn't always been the case.  Same with doping or boozing it up- I used to think I would always play not as well as being sober.  That has not always been the case.

If I knew how to get into the perfect head space to play my best everytime I would smoke a pound of pot to get there or drink a fifth, meditate for a week, pray to mary and 7 holy saints, whatever- I would.

But I can't figure out my brain.  Some nights I play awesome and some I don't.  It really doesn't matter what I do *barring self mutilation, destruction* my playing is consistently mediocre.

Yes, it is funny how this thread keeps coming back into play.  I have in the past and in the present play under the influence of different substances.  KGB-no problem, booze-no problem.  The problem for me is if I try playing HAMMERED versus playing with a nice buzz going.  I prefer not to play gigs buzzed though.  I have been told I suck when Im sober-and been told I was solid when I was nicely stoned or relaxed with a few shots of Jack Daniels.  Gene Krupa was a reefer maniac, as was Buddy Rich.  And we all know about Bonham!  Truth of the matter with Bonzo was he was on a heroin addiction medication when he aspirated his vomit-as a result of pounding 40 shots of vodka.   The bottom line is that if anyone parties to excess-its gonna catch up to you and take its toll.  I really prefer to play sober-because I (ME) believe I play better-
And my wife prefers the un-hammered version of me.  I understand Im not fun to be around when my alter ego-Mr. Ugly is around-
