Yeah I can't and don't play "hammered" hell, I don't get hammered.

It's all about getting to that "no thinking' headspace.  Where you aren't thinking, just listening to the music.  A phrase pops into your head and you lay it down- onto the next one.

You know where it's going since you have played the tune about 100 times before.  I hate thinking when I play.  Counting is something I do, but besides that- I try to keep everything right brained.

Hopefully one can get into it without getting addicted to drugs and alcohol.  The music business is a hard on a musician, physically and emotionally.  I'll leave it at that.

I'm only 15, so I don't drink, but I can tell you right now, I NEVER will drink before I drum or do drugs in general.  People say "When you turn 21, you'll start drinking."  That is bs.  At the age of 15, people have offered me tons of crap, but I have not tried any of it because I know my playing will suffer.  Plus, if you're drunk or high, you won't enjoy your success.  If you don't do well, you will be too messed up Huh to care, and you won't be able to learn what you did wrong and you won't ever improve.  That's just my opinion, but I'm sticking to it. i personally try some salvia divanorium, then smoke a little weed, followed by some BC mushrooms and tequilla...this sets the stage...
what stage i'm not sure, but it sure sets the stage!
next some heroin to set the drums...
then pass the south american frogs around to the audience, lick their back, and voila instant concert! Grin
LOL
NO DRUGS, NO ALCOHOL... Lips Sealed
DRUMS are my drug of choice as well... Wink
a little weed after is fine with tequilla, as far as the heroin, thats another story
LOL...JUST A MINUTE IT'S JIMMY PAGE, BONZO'S DRUNK AGAIN...I TOLD HIM TO STICK TO HEROIN...DUMMY!

I've played after 1 and 2 drinks but any more and I don't think I'd be worth my salt.
I played a gig where the rest of the band thought it would be funny to get pissed and see how we played. I was driving so didnt drink but safe to say that was the worst gig musically I have ever done. At least they all know they cant drink and play well though.

i only have a few drinks, as i'm driving everyone back home from the gig. Grin

i'm usually overly-amped and nervous before a gig [a problem i really need to address], so more often than not, i'll have a cocktail beforehand [no beer; too much on the bladdy]. however, there have been a few times when i was very relaxed after a drink, then something bad happened onstage [sound cut out, or the monitor sounded really warbled], and i felt really taken by surprise. so now, unless i'm bouncing off the walls prior to playing, i'm fine with just water.

pre-gig canabis is officially out of the question for me. i get too stupid and spacey.

i find it most satisfying to do all my indulging after the fact. and that includes my 4-tier pancake-topped-with-strawberries-'n-whipped-cream-fest.

truly the most indulgent night of all, though, was when we hired a driver to get us home after a late-night gig. so expensive, but he loaded in all the gear for us, brought a cooler of icy-cold cocktails, and let us go cheech 'n chongin' the whole ride back. it was pretty bitchin'... and entirely illegal.

No alcohol, and no drugs before or during rehearsals or gigs! I don't do drugs anyway, so that's really a non-issue anyway, but I stay away from alcohol whenever I play.

There are three substances I rely on to get me through though:

I drink when I play.  Helps me keep up.

(of Course, I'm referring to cold, refreshing D&D Ice coffee Tongue)

Though, people always wonder why I'm speeding tempo up.....

Now you're talking except I usually want a squirt or two of chocolate syrup on top.   Cool

I like playing drums while im drinking couse i think i sound awsum. But playing with other people and trying to be drunk is alot harder, expecially if the rest of your band is prone to drinking also. The drummer kinda needs to be a designated driver temp wise somtimes.

On a side note that no one mentioned is drinking the night BEFORE a show. Being hungover is 10 times worse then being drunk, mainly since loud sounds hurt your brain.

My friend thought the same thing.  He did not understand his judgment was not up to par.  The thing that finally convinced him was the morning I picked him up at his house and he had a female there that was UUGLY and yes, she was so bad it took two U's to spell it.  Anyway, to make a long funny story short he had to admit that either his judgment was impaired OR his standards had changed.  He went with the impaired judgment option and quit drinking during gigs.

I play straight. I used to have a shot of Jim Beam and 1 beer before the show, but the pressure of playing at a top level right now at this point in my career, is too much to take the chance of having anything in my body that would even slightly hinder my judgement. But that is just me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against having an adult beverage, just not before I play. Drugs are totally out of the question under any circumstance.

I couldn't do gigs while I'm high, or even after having one drink... no way, I've tried, doesn't work... I forget what I'm doing if I'm high, and loose track of time if I'm drunk...

One thing, however... I can figure out really weird rythems and limb independence when I'm high, so if I'm working on something really complicated I'll smoke a little. I always remember later what I learned, so it works out well for me.

But I wouldn't dare practice or gig while under the influence of anything... it takes all I have emotionally and physically to play, so I can't have anything holding me back...

Wow,  In all these years I don't seem to be able to find a bunch of straight musicians or have I read about many professonal musicians that are straight.  I can't find any musicians that don't smoke Cig's or Cigars.  I don't personally smoke tobacco and haven't for years.  We had band practice yesterday and my guitar player brought a large bottle of Crown Royal for my birthday and we enjoyed it and played for 5 hours.  I have a Crown Royal practice about once a year.  We record almost everything we do so we really do know how bad it sounds.  One of the best Red Houses that we have done was in the last set of a Crown Royal practice.  I don't remember singing or playing it but the recording sounded real good. When we practice we each usually have a few beers but if we play out it is all business.  I do have a few guitar player friends that don't drink but instead they smoke much pot.  I know from college that if you practice stoned then you should play stoned it is called state dependency.  I also know many doctors and health care professionals that will tell you that there is no medical scientific evidence that proves that pot leads to any thing else.  Not other drugs or health or even memory problem.  The government is using it to launder money on the war against drugs.  It should be made legal!!  This is just my opinion but I don't see anything wrong with it. My band has been together for 3.5 years and we know each other pretty well.
If they want to have  drinks at practice I really don't have problem with it.  Just don't go beyond the point of no return.
I remember seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd in the late 70's and I have visited Ronnie Vanzant's grave in I think it was Middlesburo Florida and there was a great big monument with the Freebird poem on it and a bottle of Jack Danials on top of the monument.  I remember him drinking more than a 5th at the concert. This stuff has killed many great musicians.  Tommy Bolin, John Bonham, Keith Moon and many many more. Jim Morrison was one messed up dude on stage but he WAS great.  Walt Disney was tripping with Timothy Lery and doing Alice and Wonderland and I am sure the Beatle were somewhere else when they did Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds?  Each to his or her own but I prefer to look at playing out as business!!!!!
