Notation Software

Hi Bart,

I'd like to start notating and transcribing some drumset pieces on the computer.  What do you recommend Finale or Sibelius?

Each notation software program has it's strengths and weaknesses.

I own and use Finale. If you plan to use the notation for publishing, Finale is a good way to go. The downside to Finale is the learning curve.

Sibelius may be a better solution for you. I don't think it has the learning curve that Finale has, and I think it's less expensive.

I would personally recommend that you try both before you purchase one. Once you choose, you won't want to switch later on, so make your choice stick.

Depending on what you are wanting to do, there are other notation programs out there, but for the most part, you get what you pay for (e.g. features).

Instead of writing out my charts by hand, I'd like to start notating them on the computer.  I would be using it mostly for transcribing.  In addition, I would be using it for some of the exercises I use in my lessons.

For what you are wanting it for, I would suggest at least checking out Finale NotePad first. This program is free.

You can also download a trial version of Finale and Sibelius from their websites. Try them out and see which one you like best before you buy. You never know, the free NotePad may work just fine for you.

If you do purchase online, try using Amazon via the Drummer Cafe! Both Finale and Sibelius are available there ... and you can help support this site in the process.

Hey Bart,

Thanks so much for your advice.  After playing around with both, I'm going to go with Finale Printmusic.  I was able to grasp learning it faster than Sibelius.
