Clarifying re: coated tom heads
(1/1)
Robyn:
On the recent thread about coated tom heads, you mentioned that you use coated heads on both the batter and reso heads. I'm wondering why this is. What does a coated head on the reso do for the sound?
Thanks :)

It's a little warmer, and not quite as bright as a clear bottom head. This used to be the standard setup on drumkits back when I was a kid, and it's a sound I've always liked. It's a great setup to use on a well-built, very resonant drumkit. You can hear samples of these toms here: http://www.keithcronin.com/studio_samples.html
On a lower quality kit (like my beloved Pearl Forums, which I'll probably be selling/giving away soon), I use clear bottom heads, to bring out any brightness the cheaper shell might lack.
I just got a gorgeous set of Yamaha Stage Custom drums, on which I plan to put coated heads on both the tops and bottoms. I'll let you know how that works out...
