Hello All,
I found this on You tube and thought it was kind of cool.  I was wondering if the box the guy is playing rhythm on has a name?  Is it more than just a box?

It's called a Cajon, which literally means "box" in Spanish. Some use this word to refer to a "crate" or "drawer" as well.

Some Cajons, like the one in this video, have loosened top edges so the player gets a buzz slap sounded when playing these edges. The top edges may have screws so that the tension and buzz effect can be adjusted. Other Cajons have have guitar strings (or the like) which give the playing surface more of a Snare sound.

Do a little searching here at the Drummer Cafe (and elsewhere) for the Cajon; there's a lot of information out there, including quite a few threads on the top here on the forum.

Thanks Bart,
I had seen Cajuns in catalogs before but I had never heard one.  The sound was quite different than I expected.  I'm not sure why I had never paid attention to them before.

I thought the trio idea was interesting.  The Cajun seemed to be a good fit for the rhythm accompaniment.

I play the cajon and hand percussion in an acoustic trio.  I also sit in several nights a week with several acoustic artists in and around Philadelphia.

I almost bought another cymbal for my road kit, and decided to go with a cajon instead...best investment I've ever made.

Does anyone know the name of the song they're playing?
I seem to remember hearing that song back in the 1960's or 1970's?
Is that the Pina Colata song? It's been so long since I've heard it.  ???
