no cartilage in thumbs

i thought carpal tunnel surgery on both hands would aleviate the pain i had in my thumbs. dec.3 i had mt orthopedic check my hands again. he took x-rays and found that both thumbs and some fingers have no more cartilage. the good news is that drumming really doesn't make my hands hurt. doctor did say it was job related as was the carpal tunnel.  i play matched grip. maybe it's less strain. anyone else have this have this problem? work is sending me for an eval at workplace health this week.
