Pork Pie snare drums
« on: February 26, 2010, 07:32 AM »
May pick up a 13x6 Pork Pie maple snare drum, the one that is made in the U.S. Does anyone have any opinion, experience with Pork Pie.I hate the look of the lugs but the couple of snares that I have heard, sound good.Thanks.

I will agree - the few wood shelled PP drums I have heard sound nice. I don't own one though.

I do have a COB (metal shelled) PP custom snare and it has a very dry crack to it. I like it but don't use it much since I picked up a new Ludwig metal shell that sounds (IMHO) better.

I own a Pork Pie "Popcorn" Maple Snare, 6x10, that I use from time to time. This particular instrument is a specialty drum, great as a secondary Snare in your set-up.

Here's a recording I did about six years ago for a project, using this particular drum, with brushes.

Finally got the 6x13 Pork Pie and it is great;I may even like it better than the Pearl Omar Hakim which is 5x13.
This PP is quite warm, nice crack, and some bottom. It is a really fine drum. The only thing that I do not like is the throw-off, as it seems like a cheap afterthought , but may be functional.Time will tell.

I've never had any problems with mine. It works just fine on all 3 of my PP snares.
