I don't like using "an" as it is too close (IMHO) to "&".  I'm of the school that each note has its own unique "word".

"an" is "and" or & ... all the same;  1 e & u or 1 ee and uh.

I prefer the Eastman Counting System ... "1 ta te ta" ... although you have to then differentiate between the two ta's.

I like to count a quadruplet as 1 e an ah, and therefore
a duplet as 1 an. They go together well.

I thought Eastman was 1 tee tay tah 2 tee tay tah....
