Wing Nut Alternatives
« on: August 20, 2011, 12:28 PM »
I'm always looking for ways to speed up set up and tear down of equipment. Are there any alternatives for wing nuts on cymbal stands that are quicker to remove and do a good job keeping the cymbal on the stand?

You could use a "hex nut", but would need a wrench to fit it.
A bolt with " spring clip" pin would work also.
It would cost a few bucks, but may save some time.  :-\

Gibralter just came out with the Swing Nut on their new Turning Point hardware.  I was (and still am to a large degree) using the Vater slick nut and just purchased a couple of the Swing Nut boom arms to try out.  Time will tell but so far they are really nice and are not a separate piece (like the Slick Nut) that can go "missing."  Although the Slick Nut is definitely the less expensive route to go.
TAMA Starclassic Bubinga and Bubinga/Birch teamed up with Zildjian!!.......and now Sabian too!

Better than this?!?!

I use the Vater SlickNuts. I did have to cut down the combo plastic cupwasher's tube on some of my stands as the Slicknuts need free thread area for it's whole hole, not just the clamping area.

Recently got some of the new GROMBALs. Look like a great alternative, BUT:
These are large rubber grommets that mount in the cymbal hole to prevent keyholing. Their hole is small enought to grip the stand threads fairly well. Does away with the felts, too, less loose parts. However, they do not fit over the large center post in my cymbal case ;>( Probably be fine with a bag.

I've been using these Grombals for a couple months now.   I was skeptical that they'd do the job, but so far so good...  no felts needed top or bottom, no wing nuts -- you simply pop the cymbal on your 'naked' stand...    Takes a minute to squeeze them into the cymbals themselves, but that's just a one time hassle -- I use a Protection Racket cymbal bag, so no worries about the center post on a cymbal vault.
