So, are we playing as close to the original as possible, or doing our own interpretation?

I don't know, you'll need to take this up with Hudson Music who is hosting this contest.  8)

My answer to your question would be "yes."  They furnish charts that have specific notation for some bars and general guidelines for others like "similar groove" and "fill."  That says to me that they are looking for the same feel, but not a note-for-note regurgitation.  That leaves room for doing a lot of stuff in your own way.  For some reason, I think that Mr. Moore would get a kick out of seeing how others apply their own technique and personality to produce a groove similar to the awesome grooves on his original tracks.

Bart's answer, however, is the best.   :)

I've made through the first page of entries ... voted for seven entries that I believe should move on to be judged in the finals.

Will work through the rest later today ... hopefully.

It was nice to see some younger drummers in there, as well as a few female drummers.

Well, I took the time to listen to almost 100 entries; quite a few of the later entries were bogus and some were also removed. Out of those, I've written down 30 names of players, all of which I voted for ... feeling they should be considered further.

I'm going to start whittling those down and only voting for those (daily) that I believe should move on.

Overall, a lot of nice playing by everyone. Kudos!

So bummed.  I had learned Pie-Eyed Manc, shot my video, went to sync up the audio and found out my JVC camcorder is pretty much past its prime and the video flies way out of sync with the audio about halfway through.  Been spending the past two weeks learning how to convert HD video off my phone and import it into Reaper.

Oh well, when I get it straightened out I'll just upload to youtube anyway...spent all that time learning it.

How are people getting so many votes?! Does anyone else find it a little odd that the contest is basically all about how many people you can get to vote daily. Does anyone know how many go through to the judging stage?

Lol im trying my best! :)

Well, like most contests, especially those online, it's a popularity contest. Voting isn't necessarily about choosing the most deserving or best sounding performer. This is true for readers polls such as the ones Modern Drummer and DRUM! magazine put on, to these playing competitions.

The good news is that final contestants will be judged by qualified judges. The bad news is that some of the stronger/better performers won't make it to the final stage. There are several performances that I am surprised TO and NOT see in the top list. Essentially those who get a lot of people (friends, etc.) to vote for them are rewarded by making it to the finals. Sort of like American Idol or Dancing With The Stars.

I can't tell you how many will make it to the final judging; only Hudson Music knows that for sure.  ;D

Hudson Music posted on FB last week some time that the top 12 most-voted videos will go through to the finals. I've been consistently sitting around #19 unfortunately, but maybe they'll take some wild-card videos  :)

Checked out your video Russell- awesome job. Your kit sounds great too! Good luck!

Thanks Arianna! I like your video too, it's nice to see people actually enjoy themselves whilst playing....rather than sit blank faced. Nice groove too!

That sucks about the top 12 been taken through, i honestly don't see how i can squeeze out as many votes as these guys! :( yeah hopefully they'll consider a few more...
