60's Ludwig Classic 16x16 Floor Tom
« on: January 07, 2012, 05:14 PM »
I have a 5 piece Ludwig Classic kit from the mid 60's and another Ludwig Classic Bass Drum and 9x13 mounted tom.

I was looking on eBay for a Blue Sparkle 60's Floor Tom so I could have two individual kits without "sharing" my Floor Tom between the kits.

I was SURPRISED (to say the least), that I found 3 of them on eBay and they ranged from $375 - $425!

I guess I haven't been buying equipment in quite a while because I had no idea that those drums were bringing those kinds of prices.

If anyone has any suggestions on where to look for one that wouldn't cost almost 4 bills, I'd appreciate it!

I play Rogers drums from the early '70s so I know what you mean about the high prices these old drums are listed at especially on ebay.  There are forums on the web related to the different manufactures - Rogers Owners Forum for example.  I've gotten stuff from members of the forum for less than on ebay.  Also, look on craigs list - sometimes people are selling these "old" drums for a fraction of cost folks who restore them are asking.

Sometimes those posting things for sale on eBay/Craigslist don't know exactly what they have.  They sometimes list items by color, the old name on the drum head, etc.  It's worthwhile to search for related keywords like "blue sprakle", "Remo", "Weather Master", stuff like that.

Check out the classifieds in Not So Modern Drummer or Classic Drummer magazines.

Also check out pawn shops, flea markets, and drum shows.  The Chicago Vintage and Custom Drum Show takes place in May just poutside of Chicago.
Working with: Second Time Around, James Curley, Scraps of Brass, The American Wind Band, and other notable Chicago musicians.

Thanks you guys.

Nothing like starting a thread and not returning for days . . .

I was lucky enough to find two bass drum spurs on eBay for my '64 Ludwig Classic bass drum.  They were the only ones I found.  I remember "back in the day" looking thru Ludwig parts catalogs and being able to order just about anything I could think of.

Maybe that was before "back in the day".
