Getting a custom cajon built/endorsed

(1/2) > >>

Matthew Whitehouse:
this is something i've been thinking about for a while - I want to get a reputable company to make a cajon for me.. with a very specific design, not just fancy colour or something..

I'm thinking - different thickness' of wood on all sides to create a different pitch on all sides of the cajon, possibly more than 4 sides, maybe two extra panels on the front to create kind of wood bongo sounds, different textures on the front to provide resistance on the the playing surface, also quick change snares for the inside, maybe you could have a trashy sounding set of strings, really thick and industrial or sets with multiple strings inside, but a system that allows easy tuning and replacement... also, perhaps an amplifiable attachable click pad on the side, seperately EQable etc etc...

Anyway - how would I go about getting this made? Any ideas?

Bart Elliott:
There are custom cajon makers out there who are pushing the boundaries beyond the standard cajon, making some truly unique innovations. I would suggest that you contact them and see if you can partner with one of them. Don't give away too much of your idea(s) until you settle on some sort of agreement (eg. compensation, royalty, patent, etc.).

If you can't find a cajon maker near you or in your region, let me know and I'll get some contact information for several makers I know. I'm extremely busy, so it would be best if you would do the investigation yourself.

Matthew Whitehouse:
great  ;D i've been looking up some people, but none i can find in my area (london - although if i look a bit harder im sure there'd be a lot).. my band's just been signed, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem negotiating.. so long as exposure could be guaranteed. I've got a lot of ideas to push boundaries of design.. I think a hybrid cajon, with electronics inside would be really interesting - but i won't disclose too much information publicly. Thanks anyway :)

Bart Elliott:
Congratulations with your band, however I think you are misunderstanding me. I'm not talking about endorsements, I'm talking about negotiating your creative ideas. Negotiating with a cajon maker as to who owns the rights to your creative ideas. You don't want to just give them away. If they are truly innovative, and from what little you've said ... it sounds as though they may be ... you want to protect that.

You need more than "exposure" for your creative ideas. They are going to take your ideas, make instruments and sell them to others, not just you. You need to protect that.

Matthew Whitehouse:
Good point.. Well, I guess i would've tried to negotiate some kind of signature series, and take a cut of each one sold.. But that's something that doesn't happen for years right?
