For all of us Billy Kilson fans out here, just curious of the release date for his new video or if you have heard.  Maybe I missed you saying anything about it, if I did just let me know please.

Billy Kilson DVD update
Just a quick update ...

Paula Crafton contacted me several weeks ago and said that Billy had to pull the project from the guy who shot the video ... and they are now looking to finish the DVD in New York. This will make it easier for Billy, rather than him having to come to Nashville.

Their hope is to release the DVD in a few months ... Fall 2008.

I just got an email from Billy Kilson's manager, Paula Crafton, who said that they are "very close to finishing the DVD".

Paula went on to say:

Quote
Billy just recently saw the interview for the first time and he really likes it. He says it is one of the best interviews he has ever done. (And he never likes to see himself or hear himself talk!)

Well that's encouraging! This is the interview that I did with Billy during his video shoot for the DVD. Supposedly the interview is going to appear as bonus footage on the DVD.

I should be getting one of the early copies once the DVD is released, so hopefully I'll have a few sneak peaks for you.

I'm going to hang with Billy Kilson in just a few hours ... documenting the making of his DVD and help with the Q&A/Interview process.

If anyone has specific questions that you would like to ask Billy and/or things you would like to know more about him and his music, post them here ... I may get a chance to ask him.

Billy studied quite extensively with Alan Dawson ... so there's a wealth of information to gather from that resource alone.

Ask him about that Hi Hat thing he does... you know that ridiculous .. I can't explain it ..amazing thing he does

Alan Dawson taught so many greats. Tony Williams for one...kind of says it all.

a friend of mine picked up some tickets for us to see chris botti at the blue note. billy will be there. i'm really psyched coz i love his playing. question is...what kind of music does botti play? honestly, i'd never heard of him til now.

i skapose i could go check out his website, but i'm looking for suggestions on stuff you might like. for some reason, i thought he was more of a smooth jazz kinda guy.

Well, it's been almost two and half years since I interviewed Billy during his DVD video shoot back in 2007. There's been a lot of set-backs with getting the DVD out to the public. I spoke to Billy's manager a number of weeks ago and the release date is still an unknown.

I'll keep you posted!

Huh. Just saw this for the first time. Somebody ought to pick that up & get it out!

Billy's a frightening player. Dawson singled him out as a protegee to watch back in the day.

imagine what he has to offer. He gets almost zero press even with a marquee gig w/Chris Botti to boot. Weird.

He did stuff in his Dave Holland period that was mind-blowing!

NotI was driving back to the office after lunch and just happened to play "Bring It On" from Dave Holland Big Band's album Overtime.  It IS mind blowing.  I was thinking of asking folks here if they would count it in 5/4 or 15/8 or what.  Definitely worth listening to.

Well, the finish line is in sight; it's only been three and a half years.   :o

My 25-minute video interview with Billy Kilson is now available in the Premium Resources.

The interview will be included as Bonus Footage on Billy's new CD/DVD, Rhythm Dancer, which is due out very soon.

Great interview, Bart. Really dug checking that out. You asked great questions and brought up interesting topics for sure.

Billy is so eloquent and poised. No surprise given the sophistication of his talent and the depth of his background. It was fascinating to hear his perspective on how it's never too late to start and the benefit of a good teacher.

I learned things about him I didn't know, which was a real treat, like his go-go background and love for Clyde Stubblefield. I've seen Billy play live, twice w/Dave Holland, but never had a chance to visit with him. I have a lot of questions for him after watching this and hope to someday have the opportunity to ask them.

He speaks of the drumset with the same love and desire for respect for the instrument that another great student of Alan Dawson's - Tony Williams - did. Coincidence? I doubt it.

Bottom line is that like Alan and Tony, Billy is a monster. I look forward to his DVD.

Billy Kilson - Interview
Well, I've finally been given permission to release this interview with Billy Kilson to the general public. It's been a Premium Resource here at the Drummer Cafe for several months, but with the release of Billy's new DVD/CD project, I'm now showing the interview on Drummer Cafe TV.

It's hard to believe that I conducted this interview back in 2007!

So, an additional update: I have no idea if and when the video footage that was shot back in 2007 for Billy's instructional DVD will ever be seen. It's shame and a long story.

The good news, Billy has a new live concert performance DVD, Rhythm Dancer, just released. The concert was recorded here in Nashville, made into a DVD package which comes with a CD of most of the tunes, along with a few extras. My interview with Billy appears as bonus footage on the DVD. I also had the honor of writing the liner notes for Rhythm Dancer.

So check out the interview on Drummer Cafe TV, and pick up a copy of the DVD/CD from Billy's website. The permanent home for the interview is here: http://www.drummercafe.com/music-industry/featured-articles/interview-with-billy-kilson.html

Billy Kilson in Nashville
I'll be hanging with Billy Kilson in about an hour.

Billy is in town (Nashville, TN) this weekend, playing drums with Chris Botti and the Nashville Symphony.

I'm excited to get to visit with Billy since I haven't seen him since I did the video interview back in 2007. Five years is a LONG time!
