Hey Guys,
Let me introduce myself.  My name is Jennifer and I live in the great city of Dallas TX.
I am a 38 year-old mother of three whom I school during the day and teach martial arts at night.
My husband is a guitar/vocals guy with a studio in our home.  I just started playing drums about six months ago to help out the guys with some basic tracks and working out songs.
What started out as a way to help immediately turned into a passion.  Hitting things that don't move is a new concept.
I am thrilled to find this site with concrete information.  EVERY drummer I asked basic questions just looked at their feet and mumbled something about personal preference.
I am looking forward to learning as much as I can from you guys.  No mumbling!  Just kidding.  I figure it has to be a drummer thing.
Jennifer

my name's Matthew, I'm 17, and I've played drums for about 11 years. I've been in a band with my brother and a friend for about 3 years. We mostly just play to jam, and enjoy the music...it may not be the funnest to listen to. We play alot of different stuff, inlcuding more oldschool rock, as well as modern rock stuff, and quieter acoustic stuff. We really enjoy just jamming on a song idea for 20 minutes or so, although we've condensed some stuff into shorter songs with vocals.

Hello All,

I've been floating around in the background on a daily basis since September of last year, which is about the same time I started learning the drums. I have always wanted to play the drums and it feels great to be on the road to enlightenment.

I posted a few messages for the first time the other day. There has been no real need to ask anything so far as I've found most answers to my questions in the wealth of information contained in these forums (and the remainder on the Vic Firth site).

I'm currently working my way through Mark Wessels's A Fresh Start to the Snare Drum and Carmine Appice's Ultimate Realistic Rock. I practice on a RealFeel pad at home and rent a kit (Yamaha Oak Custom) for a few hours a week.

I'm 29 years old (never too late to start!) and currently work as a technical translator (Japanese to English) in Yokohama, Japan. I live in an old Japanese house and have a fibre optic internet connection - but no running hot water. Love that. I like taking photos too.

Greetings and I'll see you around.

Hello, I've been browsing these forums for quite some time. I had an account, but I completely forgot everything about it. I came back to these forums and tried to search for something, but alas you need to be logged in to do that. My old account was pretty much busted (the password recovering didn't work for me), so I "re-birthed" myself here in a new account.

Anyway about me, I'm currently a high school junior in the northern Virginia area. I've been playing drums since middle school, and been in school jazz bands since 8th grade. I have a very light touch and wouldn't mind playing below 6 in. off the head all the time. Unfortunately for me, my drum instructor says otherwise.  ;D My current set consists of a Ludwig hammered bronze snare... and thats it. One day I might raise enough funds (and make up my mind) to get me a nice bass and cymbals to go along with it. Till then I practice on my Gibraltar pad set.

Well hopefully you can get a summer job to raise enough money for a set of good drums, cymbals, and cases. I have also found that begging the relatives works real good at your age........... Awesome snare, BTW

Hey fellow drummers, my name is Matt. I found out about the forum through the Psalm Drummers web site and thought it would great to start connecting with other drummers all over the world. Would love to network with other Christian drummers too to get their experiences of drumming in church and stuff.

A tardy hello.
I'm an American AND Portuguese living in Lisbon, Portugal. I took classes for 7 months a few years ago while living in Pittsburgh and now own what might as well be called a practice pad set and will more or less weekly play at a rented cheap studio.
18 years old, and although I do not act like it, every day that passes by without me trying to improve my drumming makes me sort of panic. I'm going to college and although extensively inexperienced compared to many a gentleman I am very passionate about percussion. I am trying to restart lessons, in order to achieve better technique and expand out of basic styles. As you might see, I'm looking to get a semi-pro kit, and hope to find soon where to use it on a practice basis.

I have a 5 man band with my best friends (tentatively/heroically called [the] Rubber Duckies), but things have not been productive at all, mainly due to our student lives. And stuff.

I hope to learn. I have learned a lot recently already from this cafe.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Joe Jordan.

I live in East Providence, RI.

I had been playing professionally 3-5 nights a week since the age of 15.

I am now 41 and semi-retired.

I was a member of MTV Basement Tapes finalists "Hostage" in the late 80's.

I also played with "Bittersweet" which was a touring original hard rock act in the early 90"s.

I have lived in MA, RI, FL, NY and CA during my pursuit of the elusive record deal.

My last pro gig was with the top NE alternative cover band "What Matters" from 1992-2002.

Mt last audition was with the top rated Ozzy tribute band "Believer".

I was also a drum instructor at "Rick's Music World" to 30-40 students.

I love all styles of music especially 80's metal, Alternative Rock and Jazz Fusion.

Post by: ls1jay on March 06, 2007, 08:02 PM
Hey guys...

New guy here! I just thought I'd say hi. I've been playing for 30 yrs and have pretty much played it all (music wise). I guess at heart, I'm more of a hard rock/metal drummer in reality. I'm hoping this is a more mature forum than the one I just left. I won't say which one, but it was one of those... well, this brand is best... and your set up has to be like this... and so forth... Anyone know what I mean? Seemed like a bunch of spoiled kids with high dollar kits and 80% couldn't play good enough to justify their kits!

Anyway, enough of that. I'll post a couple links to pics of my kit just in case anyone is interested: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/JayinFlorida/DSCF5686.jpg

If anyone would like to know the specs... just ask.  :)

Welcome Joe and Jay!

Joe, I vaguely remember some friends in high school liking your band. Or at least, I recall the band name sketched into their notebooks, right next to Ozzy, Metallica, and other bands of the day.

I was, of course, the only drummer in my high school who had a picture of Steve Gadd sitting behind his Yammies stuck in the slot of my Trapper Keeper, but I was the oddball single pedal player and the only drummer with short hair.

Hello!

It's nice to know that someone remembers us "Old Timers"!

We probably know many of the same people.

Rhode Island is such a tight knit community.

Yes, I worked at the "Ricks Music World" under the great Doug Kelley, for a couple of years in the early 90's.

It always amazes me how time passes so quickly!

What are you up to these days?

Hi! I joined today, and I like it here. I'm also a member at the Pearl forums. I have been playing for 4 years and a member of my High School Drumline!!! Also a member of the school's symphonic wind ensemble (class AA) and percussion ensemble(class A). Our percussion ensemble recieved a 1 at contest (best score) and we are traveling to a national competition at the end of the month.
Although I played cymbals this year on drumline, as a result of missing tryouts and the first week of band, I am extremely motivated to make snare next year and continue on my quest to become a snare player at the university i hope to attend.
Guess that's it!!

Hey, I'm Chris. I've been fumbling around with drums for about 15mos. I am a songwriter with a small home studio and started playing drums to add some live percussion to my recordings. I think I found this site searching for info on the Remo Suede heads, which seem to be popular among some members here. So far, I've just been searching the archives -- seems like some friendly, knowledgeable folks around here.

My meager setup:
Gretsch Blackhawk EX Fusion in White Diamond & Gibraltar Hardware
Remo Suede, Renaissance, and Fiberskyn heads
Zildjian 13" K Custom Dark Hats, 16" K Custom Session Crash, 18" A Custom Fast Crash, 20" K Custom Dry Ride
Wuhan 12" China
Vic Firth SD4 Combo sticks, amongst others
Pearl Roadster D-2000 throne
accessory Ludwig 13" Piccolo Snare with Evans Strata 700 head/Hazy 300 SS

Hi folks..my name is Kat.  I've drummed my entire life.  I eat, sleep, breathe, and talk about drums and drumming most of the time.  I've been dubbed a "drum geek" and I'm not going to argue with that.  I don't have a huge collection of drums, but I have enough equipment to get the job done. I teach when I have a spare moment.  I've worked for a custom drum builder before so, I have knowledge of the building process etc.  I am just happy to be accepted by the drumming community as a female performer, singer and drummer.  It's been a long road and I've never given up.  I've been influenced by every drummer I've ever heard, but my all time favorite drummer is Bun E. Carlos.  Everyone has a fav.!  ;) ~Rock on~ Kat

Hi Kat.  Welcome to The Cafe!!  You should feel right at home here as many of us share your pasion for drums.  What experiences did you gain from working at the custom drum building shop?  I'm always interested in that subject.  Did you get a chance to hear the differences between various cuts of bearing edges?

I discovered that drum buliding isn't at all intimidating.  I've always done my own maintainance, upkeep on my kits.  I am mechanically inclined for a "girl" I never had the bucks to have someone else do it, so I learned kit upkeep really quick.  A few kits I had as a kid were disasters, so it was a challenge to keep them standing!!!

I was hired as a teacher for the house studio and I got to hang out in the builder's bay. I ordered my own kit and got to help out with assembly, wrapping, etc.  They were good to me and I learned a lot.

I don't have a zen answer about bearing edges, but I've found that a sharper edge can make the drum hard to tune.  A rounded edge will save wear and tear on heads..etc.  My Big Brew custom has a fairly deep edge and it is a really deep-toned kit.  The guy who designed my kit said he put some"English" on my bearing edges...so, he must have tweeked them to his personal standards.  They are Keller maple shells so, if you're familiar with Keller....~ Kat

Kat - that's cool that you got to help in the assembly process.  Yes, I'm familar with Keller shells... my kit was also made with those, but I didn't get to help build it like you!!!  That kinda gives you a special appreciation for your drums, huh?

Hey.. My names Mikhail and I've been browsing the forum for a while, but just now decided to post.  I'm 16 and I've been drumming since I was 10 or so in school band.  I didn't start drumming on a set until July 2006. Doing school band helped me tons, since I started set already knowing how to count, hold a decent beat, and read music/tabs. I'm not very good, but I'm trying.  I always wanted to drum on a set, but never had enough money.  One day my friend told me his brother was selling his set for $100, so I went and checked it out.  It was just a cheap eBay set really, probably $200 or so on eBay if I were to look it up.  It included the basics: snare, bass, 2 rack toms, floor tom and a crash/ride and hi-hats.  I went for it and bought it and started messing around a bit.  My friends decided they wanted to start a punk band, so I joined up with them, and it's been going great.  With a few shows we've been playing I managed to do quite a bit with the set.  I managed to replace all of the heads with Evans and take out all the cheap-o cymbals and bought a set of name brand cheap-o cymbals, the Zildjian ZBTs.  They're not bad.. can't complain for the price. I messed around with my setup a bit and wound up taking out one rack tom and putting the other on a snare stand.  I like the setup quite a bit.  That's about it.. Probably more than any of you ever needed to know about me, but oh well.

Pictures of my set:

I am nine years old, Have a new pair of drumsticks, Always wanted to be a drummer.  My mom says I need to get an electronic drum set since where we live we can't have a normal set, but they are expensive so she bought me a pair of drum sticks and told me to practice drumming on everything in the house with them first and then if I still like drumming she'll try to buy me an electronic set.  I just wanted to say hello and to ask you what is the best way to start to be a drummer?? :D

Hi Gabi and welcome to Drummer Cafe!

Number 1....YOU KEEP DREAMIN!!!!  Everything else will work itself out in due time.

I started drumming when I was 7.  My Dad knew it was time to get me my first drumset when he came home from work one day and there were little drum stick dents on our stove top...LOL

Electronic kits are expensive and may not make the best beginner kit, although it is difficult if you live in an apartment etc.  Make sure to get a good practice pad and find a good teacher.  Do you have band at school?  At your private lessons and at your school band rehearsal you don't have to worry about how much noise you make!

Good luck to you

Hannah

Hi Gabi!

Welcome to the Cafe!  I'll second Hannah's comments...  keep up your desire to play and it WILL work itself out in time.  Her advice about school bands and private lessons is golden...  ;D

My daughter is 8 and enjoys playing my drums from time to time, although not seriously.  We're lucky enough to live in a place where noise isn't really an issue.  However, when I was young (about your age) and practicing at home, it was not uncommon for the neighbors to call the police on me!  I made it a point to seek those neighbors out and ask them when some appropriate times would be for me to practice.  It wasn't ideal, but I was able to work out a reasonable practice schedule (on real drums) that accommodated the neighbors.  The rest of my practice time was spent on pads and such, where noise wasn't a factor.  Good luck!

BTW, you have an extremely mature style of writing for a 9 year old!  I'm guessing that you do very well in school!

Welcome again!

Welcome Sara!!  You came to the perfect place to learn a lot of great stuff!!!

Hi all,
I just discovered this awesome forum and am looking forward to sharing and recieving as much new information as possible. I am 25 years old and live in southern Utah. I am not mormon, And have been playing my 4pc Premier Signia Maple kit for about 13 years. I have played with many local bands and am now trying to get in with the worship team at my church. I thank God everyday for the talent he has blessed me with. Some of my favorite drummers are Stewart Copland, Ryan Rhapsys, Billy Ward, Nathan Richarson, Steve Gadd and Steve Smith. I'm not real big on the double bass, I have a 9002 double pedal but rarley use it. I play a Zildjian set-up consisting of a pair of 14 special dark K hi-hats that I absolutly love, a 18" A custom fast crash, and a 21" sweet ride that I think is the most versitile ride cymbal that Zildjian makes. Anyway if you have actually read all of this, thanks.  ;D

Hey there my name is Nathan and i'm from Louisiana.  I'm 46yoa and having been playing drums on and off since i was 10.  Currently i'm playing in a southern gospel group that plays around at different churchs.  Last year i purchased a nesting kit from the Modern Drum Shop and they are very nice.  The sound is very good for such a small kit.  Just found the cafe a couple of weeks ago.  I did not know such a place as this existed on the internet. Very nice.  There is a lot of good info here.

Hi, Nathan. Welcome to the forum!
Sophie.

This is actually my second time around (... I have the shirts to prove it!)...I got sidetracked with other things and well, let's just say I "expired"  ;)

Anyway, my real name is "Anthony"; Mongrel is an old online-gaming nickname that, well...just 'is'...

Started playing about two months after my 14th birthday and a month after my parents divorced.  Spent 5 years playing trumpet as a frustrated drummer prior to that.  Bought a bunch of odd-ball pieces off of a kid down the street for $30 bucks and used an old potato chip can as a bass drum.  In June of '77 I talked my father into buying me a real kit, which I still have (Rogers red-onyx 'mongrel' Cleveland, Dayton, Fullerton kit...).  Played hard until about 1985, until 'personal issues' (read: drugs & alchohol..) ruined my rockstar plans.  Put the kit into storage in Feb. 1987 when I went clean and met my wife.  Became a Christian, got married and didn't play again until about 1993 or so.  Started playing regularly in Dec. 1999 when I purchased a Tama Starclassic Performer kit with a small bit of money left to me after my mom's death.

Nowadays I bang on an electric kit in a church praise band on Sunday mornings and while I wait to be discovered...well...that's the dream anyway...

I've had about three 'formal' lessons, I suck at math and play by heart.  Can't count a measure off in my head on a good day, but I get by.  Lots of help early on from drummers who either didn't have a kit and used mine, or had no place to practice and used my house-and I'm grateful for all of them.  Someday I'll get around to sending a tape off to Bart so he can give it to me straight  ;D

Anyway-Drummer Cafe is still a great place and I'm glad to be back!

Almost forgot:  5'6", one hundred and too many pounds, Wife, three kids, one granddaughter....

(let me know if this is too much information and I'll edit it down to one sentence... :-[...)

Yes and Yes. I was part of another drum forum back in 2000 that was dying. James Walker and Felix were part of that same forum. I got the idea to start my own forum and incorporate some of the values that I thought needed to be present in an online community ... and the Drummer Cafe was born ... December, 2001. Needless to say its grown a lot since then and the vision is a lot bigger now.

Hello everyone

my name is Brendan and i'm a drum addict. I'm 21 years old. I've been drumming since I was 12 or something like that. I honestly don't remember an exact age. My avatar is lame. I own a pearl masters studio kit, racked. I'm not a fan of using the same brand cymbals all around, even though people tell me I should. Right now I use a mix of zildjians, sabian B8's, wuhan turkish chinas, and pearls. I like the way they sound... i'll probably put my full specs in sig.

oh and I'm from manchester connecticut. I'm currently not in a band. I was in a band for  like 6-7 months but I left due to the lack of creativity and commitment of other members.

No one knows who I am. I wasn't exactly an "active" member in my school. I got kicked out and went to boarding school in california. That was cool. Some really rich kid brought in a $5000 electric set... I used it 10x more than he did. Pretty much every day for like, 2 years or so. That kid hated me. But I really didn't care.

anyways... i'm always looking for people to meet, hopefully this site with give me some kind of exposure.

and thats about it.

Dave Huffman here, found this place the other night I thought I would give it a try.
I play Ludwig & GMS drums & use Zildjian cymbals . Have the GMS set for sale & they will be at the chicago show. I am playing a mid 80's ludwig kit with a large 14" X 28" bass drum, 12" X 14 rack tom & a 16" X 16" floor tom.
I love talking drums both old & new. Glad to find this place.

Welcome aboard Dave. Great board here if your stuck on equiptment choices, need info on building a custom snare-drum or anything that involves the greatest art in the universe....DRUMMING!! 8). 28'' bass drum?, it takes a hell of a man to control a 28. Sounds like you and Abe Laboriel Jr. may be starting the latest fad. The largest BD ive owned was a 26 and im now down to a 22 for ease of miking and fitting in my 96 Kia sportage.

It's weird but the 14" X 28" is a real easy drum to get a good soud from for me. It can be real soft or roar like a lion. Love that drum. My problem drum is the 12" X 14" rack tom. I just found a 9" X 13" shell that I will have painted to match the custom red - silver duco a friend in Indy. Painted for me. I may use the 14" as a floor tom or cut it down to a 7" X 14 snare drum.
I pretty much have always played American made drums Except I do have a nice 80's Tama Rock Star I am going to use for trading material. I helped a buddy out that needed some$$$.
Drums sure are fun!

I don't think I introduced myself yet.  If I did already, my apologies.  [I tried to search and couldn't find myself.  :)  ]

I have been trying to find a drum forum *home*, and I introduced myself elsewhere, but I don't think here.

Anyway, I'm returning to drumming after many, many years.  I studied drums for several years as a kid, and gigged in my teens and twenties.  It went on the shelf when I got out of the house, got married, had kids, etc.

In my 30's, I *discovered* bass, and currently, I gig out on bass.

Recently, the urge has been too great to deny any longer, and I had to return to drums.  I now have a small, compact kit in my house for the first time in many years.

I'm actually having more fun returning to work on rudiments than I do playing rhythms and playing along to songs.    For now.

It's great to be back.

I'm Peter Olofsson, living in Umeå, north Sweden. I've been drumming since 1983, and I play some bass, keyboards and guitar as well. Not "as well", but......

Soon I'm graduating as an electronics engineer at the university of Umeå, so I might have to move frome here later, who knows.... Anyway, I currently make a living playing gigs with my cover band in Umeå, and sometimes in the mountains, also (after-ski gigs).

The Drummer Café is a great place to hang out  :)

All the after-ski gigs I've done so far has been in hotel bars, but last year in Riksgränsen (on the Norwegian border) the weather was so good, we played outdoors. If you've seen "Copper Mountain" (Jim Carrey's debut, horrible movie ;D ) you have an idea what it looks like. Very beautiful  :)

We also play in a place called Borgafjäll. Unfortunately, we didn't play there on New Year's Eve 2005. Unfortunately because, later I learned that Robert Plant showed up in the audience that night, and asked to sing some songs with the band!!  :o  I can only imagine the adrenaline rush they must have felt.... The reason he was there was because he was dating the daughter of the owner of the hotel (Lisa Lövbrand, who has a solo record out now). You certanly don't expect to see Robert Plant in a place like Borgafjäll ;)

Chris, I assume you were visiting the Toontrack studio, or do you have other connections to UmeÃ¥? In fact, Toontrack is only 200 meters from where I grew up. I don't know the people at Toontrack, but I've played with the percussionist (Mikael Emsing) many times. He's in the video that you posted here some time ago.  :)

Greetings all,

I'm fairly new to this forum and wanted to say hello to everyone out there.  I live in southern Colorado where I teach music (percussion, world music, music literature)  at Adams State College.  My career has included the USAF Band of the Golden West, numerous orchestras in the south and on the west coast, and various bands/groups in a variety of "styles" along the way.  My current projects include an Irish group, my own jazz trio, a marimba/flute duo, accompanist to a belly dance troupe, and in a couple weeks, I'm off to the Middle East/Horn of Africa with the rock band from the Air National Guard Band of the Gulf Coast.

This forum has great stuff, great member responses, and a variety info for everyone to continue learning!

Thanks DrummerCafe!!

Hey guys,
Name's Darren, and I'm 22. Just graduated from the University of Colorado, and maybe my first big regret of life is that my degree was not in music. Anyway, since I'm in the process of moving around, finding a job, getting settled, all that nonsense, I currently don't have any solid gigs, but hopefully in a month or so that'll change. I love playing all kinds of music, fave artists include everything from Coltrane to Marley to Tool.

Favorite drummers I'm digging right now include (short sample, obviously): Jeff Ballard (I've already decided my first dog I get in a month or so is going to be named Ballard, in tribute), Brian Blade, Elvin, Danny Carey, Chad Sexton (tight, tight, tight rudiment based drumming in a mainstream setting, love Chad) etc. So all gigs I've had before only satisfied my music thirst in only one sense, I prefer to have multiple projects going on at once. (Although sometimes my ambition overreaches my abilities!)

Anyway really random introduction, but glad to be here and look forward to being able to say words like "pataflafla" and know people understand what I'm talking about, and aren't thinking I've gone nuts.

You probably know this, but Chad got his chops marching snare in drum and bugle corps. I was the Percussion Caption Head of the Railmen in Omaha, Nebraska, when Chad was in the snare line. He went from us to a DCI finalist corps, the Sky Ryders.

That's so sick. What was he like when he was marching for you guys? Was he just a normal old snare drummer (well compared to the others in the line, you can hardly call those guys "normal"), or did he stand out in any way?

Btw, given your experience I'm sure I'll be bouncing many ideas off you / asking for your advice in the future!!!

Chad was just a very nice high school kid. I was fortunate to have several of his talent level in the line. All the snares left for Sky. Some are now band directors in the Omaha area. Chad called me once when 311 was playing in DFW, but I wasn't able to go to the show.

tl;dr worthy

After a bit over 3 decades of drawing breath, only the first seven were without drums. Since then they have always been a part of my life. When other interests or activities were the focus of my attention, they were still lurking. For a period of not having a Set to play, the steering wheel of the car or my knees and chest took its place.

I shared a set with my older brother for several years. I remember a, well brotherly ;) , conversation. I had been on for a bit and He felt that it was his turn. All we had were some head phones to jam with and when he interrupted me he said "You don't know how to play that song, maybe you should learn it first. It's my turn." As I was getting up, I said to him with a smirk "I played it close enough for you to recognize it didn't I" and left the basement while dodging a 5B.

Nevertheless, I was always impressed with the accuracy with which he could match songs, fills, etc. Walking into the house within a few seconds, I knew what song he was playing. That just never was my style. I like butchering songs to make them the way they make me feel.

From what I have read so far on this forum, I am on the other side of the curve and will not have much to add. I will lurk, but in this situation, I feel it is more read, think, absorb- repeat and contribute when I can.

Hi, I guess I'll introduce myself since I've been lurking here for a bit.  My name is Mark and I am a bit past the 4 decade point.  I grew up in MA and now lay my hat in the Inland Empire of SoCal.  I've always loved a variety of music.  I first started playing drums back in high school. I bought a 4-piece piece of crap from a guy I worked with.  Took a few lessons here and there.  I was never one for structured practice, I just loved banging away to to the radio or tapes.  By the time I turned 18, in true Kieth Moon style my set layed in busted-up splintered ruins.  Anger issues maybe?  Now after a 23 year break I'm jumping back in with a new Pearl set and an appreciation for taking it slower and learning the basics first.  These boards seem pretty cool with good info and I'm sure I'll be asking for advice a lot, and hopefullyill be able to add my 2 cents at some point.

Hi everyone,

I've been posting for sometime, but never really introduced myself. My name is Jorge Canela, and I am Portuguese (small country next to Spain). I have playing bass for 10 years, Guitar for 8, and drums for 6 months. My main instrument is guitar, 'cause ppl kept telling me I was playing too many notes on my bass guitar :)

I did a two year audio engineering course, and actually teach several subjects at a Music Technologies Institute in Lisbon.

So basically I do everything music related: perform (live and studio, guitar and bass), compose, write lyrics, record, edit, mix, master, musical directing, arrangement work.

I love rock (I include metal under rock), prog, classical and pop. Like some other stuff too, but this is what makes me move.

I am now doing a two hour, daily drum practice routine, and expect to hit the stages with my all original band (Seed, hard rock trio) in the beggining of next year, with the production of our debut album starting at the same time.

Cheers

Hello everybody. This is my first post here.

I have been playing drums for quite a while now. Since 2002. But, I always played in a band and never had time to really practice. I played only during rehearsals. In the last year and a half I didn't play at all, because of other obligations.

I started playing again a month ago and I'm really keen to learn playing drums properly. I never had a teacher. Internet was my only resource and it's the same now. I found this website and it's very helpful.

I've always wanted to learn how to play a double bass pedal so I bought a Sonor DP 472 R. As for the Metronome I'm using a Korg LMA 120. ;D

Well, I've been playing professionally for over fifty years. My background is in jazz, rock, blues, country, classical, you name it I've probably played it. I spent quite a few years in Chicago and did studio work there for about seven years and played with an eight piece horn band doing originals and BS&T, Chicago, Maynard and a lot of R&B. I was the percussion section leader for the Missoula, Montana Symphony for about three years. I've had a many and varied career from funk to big band.

I've been playing the same set of Red Sparkle Buddy Rich Celebrity Rogers Drums for over forty years. 22x14 - 9x13 - 16x16 and I added an 8x12 a few years later. I purchased my COB 1963 Dyna-Sonic new in the summer of 64. This set has been played professionally almost every week since I bought them. The greatest drums ever made. I bought my zyldjians, after four months of trying cymbals, at Franks Drum Shop in Chicago.

I'm married and have lived in Missoula, MT (The Last Best Place) for the last 32 years.

Looking forward to meeting some of you and sharing what I have from this wonderful business called music and learning from you.

Hello everybody.
My name is chong ee or u guys can call me CE or CEing!  ;D I just started to learn drums around 6 months ago. Me and some of my friends who are beginners as well formed a band around the time I started to learn drums, i guess playing and learning with someone u are more familiar with is much more comfortable.  :) Oh by the way i am from Singapore, anyone of u guys from Singpaore too? I came across this forum when i was searching for more information about drums and stuff on yahoo. This is really a good forum seriously. Oh and i have been looking for this book called the 'stick control for the snare drummer' by George Lawrence Stone (guess u guys are quite familiar with this book) around Singapore for ages, i thought it would be quite expensive if i imported it into Singapore (taxes and all that stuff  :-X) and would like to find out if anyone of u guys knows which retailer in Singapore sells this book (I have been to quite a number of bookshops but to no avail  :-\) Thx a lot.

Hello all, my name is Kevin. I'm new to the forum, so I thought I'd introduce myself. A little about me, I've been into music since I was very young. I got my start in drumming playing concert snare for the school in 5th grade roughly 18 years ago. Before I knew it, I was hooked.

I loved marching band as I got older, as well as concert band. My first taste of drum set playing was for my school's basketball pep-band, and from there, I started my journey. Currently, I'm playing for the band Killing Chloe, which is in the realm of Rock/Progressive/Pop, and I'm having a blast.

I've been reading some of the articles here, and I'm looking forward to applying some of them to my day to day study, as well as chatting with all of you. This looks like a great site from what I've seen so far. Thanks for having me.

Hello everyone,
I found the forum running a search on some vintage Acrolite information and ended up lurking here for about 3 hours! Great forum here: a nice, more mature crowd and tons of great information. The articles are good too, and have actually motivated me to get out the 'ole practice pad again!

I've only been playing for about 2 years. Got a stencil kit when I could afford to, then sold a kidney and upgraded to a PDP CX after about a year when I realized how much I love drumming. Like some other kids, my formal training consisted of playing my mom's pots and pans with wooden cooking spoons starting at about 8 years old and now here I am 20-something years later with a real kit :)

Looking forward to chatting with everyone!

Cheers,
Steve

Title: Let me introduce myself
Post by: Lou on January 10, 2008, 01:33 PM
Hello everyone ... just wanted to introduce myself after lurking on this site for a while, which I enjoy a lot by the way, not in the least because of the lack of young dogs shouting, screaming and lacking some sense of decent behaviour that you find on so many other websites. Living in The Netherlands, age 48, married and a dad of 2 kids,  never played an instrument before I recently started my attempts learning to play drums ... quite a challenge, but a fun one. A thread  in this forum that started over a year ago by a 63-year young member gave me confidence that in a year or so I will be able to reach a skill level good enough to play in a band with some friends. I tried to teach myself with a stack of books and dvd's but quickly realized that some support from a teacher would be more helpful. I found one but I will go and look for another one ... one who knows about the book " Stick Control" and knows drummers like Gavin Harrison and Keith Carlock  :-\. Well for now I leave it with this introduction ... and say thanks to you for all the inspiration I get here.

Hi Lou, welcome to the DC group. As you can see some of us are experienced veterans, and many others are just beginning. Either way, this is a great bunch of people. Even as a guy who played since my school days, I learn something new all the time. When I was inspired to find a drumming community I couldn't have asked for nicer people to be with. I would love to visit your country, but I doubt that will ever happen. My grandmother was from Norway so I know a little about your country. It's nice to meet you....  :)

Chip71 ... thanks for the welcome ... and you're right a bunch of nice people here ... Now it seems that besides the fact that there's a lot to learn for me here there is a little opportunity for me to share some info on a non-drum-related topic ....

Norway and the Netherlands have from a geographical and especially geological point of view nothing in common. Norway is a very mountainous ... and compared to the Netherlands a huge country. I can drive from north to south in a little over 3 hours, from east to west in less than 2.5 hours and ... without the risc of a speeding ticket (if there are no traffic jams, well ok 4 hours because there are almost always traffic jams :( ) .... In Norway climate can be extreme with long dark cold winters with lots of snow. The Netherlands ... a small flat rainy and windy (especially from late summer to spring) country ... maybe a couple of days some snow and every decade (if we're lucky) ice on the canals to skate on,  I live 6 meters below sea level about 10 miles from the North Sea, (it feels like Europe's kitchen sink). A storm like Katrina (thank God we don't have those) would probably flood half of the country. No, i'm afraid we're nothing like Norway :).  Nevertheless, the Netherlands is worth a visit, I am sure you would enjoy it ... but be warned, don't expect coffee in our coffee shops .... lol.

Best regards,

Louis

Haven't sat behind a kit since the mid 1980's. Played guitar all my life, and when I told my wife I wanted to play drums again, she said, "So, what are you waiting for. Go do it."

Long story longer... bought a used kit from a friend, new cymbals, new heads...small investment to see if I still have it in me. Already I am looking to upgrade one piece at a time. If nothing else, it's a great workout!

I have been a member since back end of last year and have posted on a few things but never formally introduced myself.

My name is Paul, I am 21 and from Preston in Lancashire (United Kingdom)
I have been playing properly since June 2007 when I got my first and current drum kit (Pearl Forum). Fairly recently I got myself a pack of Zildjian cymbals and more recently, Remo heads.

I play mainly rock stuff, with a bit of funk.

Nice to meet you all

Just getting the passion back after a long, long layoff and I came across this forum and very glad I am too.   I'm very pleased to meet you all....so to speak.
Anyway, before I logged on I was looking at a thread about soundproofing one's apartment and now the forum seems to have changed it's format somewhat and I can't find it. Forgive me if I'm doing something obviously dumb, I have had very little sleep in the last week and I'm having a tough time concentrating.
It was in a section called "Tips and tricks", right above one called "Acoustic drums",  I think!
Thanks.

We have been together for about 4 months, playin out already and have 2 big festivals lined up so far for this summer.  We are playing a combo of originals and rearranged covers, but not the normal covers.  Love playin and hope to continue playin until it is no longer physically possible.

A DW collectors six pieces for graduation, a RMV kit that I bought with bar mitzvah money, and an old premier three piece shell pack I traded a double pedal for. k customs for cymbals.

Hi.  I've been observing on the forum for a while.  I'm from Indiana and started playing again about 3 years ago.  I played mostly rock in the basement and garage, but this time I was drawn into classical and concert band material and discovered a love for military marches.  I play in a concert band and recently had my first drumset gig :o  ;D with a dixieland-type band.

I'm a huge fan of old and new garage rock, rockabilly, and am slowly getting drawn into the mysterious world of jazz.

I have a Tama fusion kit, and if I'm very, very good I might be able to take home a Gretsch jazz kit before the year ends. Cymbals are 14" old New Beats hi hats, a Sabian Vault crash and a Sabian medium heavy ride.  I recently added a 7 X 13 Gretsch snare to the two snares I already have.

It's good to talk drums and music, isn't it?

Hello everyone. I am new to the site. I have been drumming for a year or so now and enjoy it very much. I take lessons at George's Drum Shop here in Akron Ohio. From time to time I'll post links to their newsletter about deals and events if that's cool. I look forward to joining the community, discussing drums, learning and contributing whatever I can.

Hello from Ohio.

Hey all, I'm Justin. I'm 17 and a senior in high school, and I've played percussion since I started my school's band program in 5th grade. I played piano for years before that, so I was fairly advanced compared to my peers, who still think of me as some brilliant musician. But I come from a small town that doesn't generally pay a lot of attention to its music programs, so I'm really not as great as they think I am.

I've played both quads and snare in marching and pep band, which are pretty much the same group here, drums in jazz band, and, well you know the kind of stuff we do in concert band.

When I started looking around here the other day, I noticed immediately that this stuff is what you all live for. There's so much passion here for the art of music and percussion. And to be honest, it kinda scares me... :P So I hope I can learn from everyone here and become a better musician for it.

Edit: Awesome, I started a new page...

Welcome Justin!  You may be surprised how many came from small schools.  I graduated in 1966 and there were 12 in my senior class.  I think that qualifies as small.  I have been gigging since 1964 and have enjoyed playing all types of music.  Drag up your throne, have a seat, and enjoy the fun we have at the Drummer Cafe.

Hello all.....
A good friend and member of the this forum, Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz, told me of this site, how great it was, and said I should check it out. I have been a member of two other boards for a few years, but  because of his and another members urging, I wanted to check it out.
I am Drumjinx on the other forums, but will be BlaemireJinx on this one.
I am, as the name indicates, a big fan of Blaemire fiberglass drums. I have restored multiple kits and built others from NOS shells that I bought from Allen Blaemire himself. One of my restored kits is in this months issue of Classic Drummer...the Readers Showcase page.
One of the reasons I have posted at this time, is that I am currently looking for a 14, 15, or 16 Blaemire shell for a floor tom. I was told that a member here, may have what I am looking for. If anyone here has one or knows of one, please let me know.
I look forward to hanging out on the board. So far...what I have seen and read has peaked my interest. 8)

I used to be active on this website, but somehow I lost my account or password about a year ago, so I took some time off.  I think the site was undergoing renovations at the time.  A couple weeks ago I created a new account under a new name.  I can't even remember what my old screen name was, but it probably included my name Doug.  I am really glad to be back on here and already have learned some good stuff in the short time I've been back.

As a re-introduction:  I just turned 47 years old.  I started playing drums officially in college, although I beat on everything available long before that.  I started playing classic rock and taught myself to play following along to records.  I helped create a 5-peice rock band in the late 80's, which included two other co-workers (bass and guitar).  Since we all worked in the civil engineering business design roads and bridges, we named the band ROADBLOCK.

After a few years in the band I got married and had our first child.  I also started getting more serious about my faith.  So the band kind of disbanded and then reformed without me.  I was bitter for a while and totally gave up playing for a few years.  Then in 1992 I moved to a new area and joined a local church.  Each member had to fill out a talent card and list what talents you have.  I almost chuckled when I listed drumming.

A couple months later the church music director called me and said they need a drummer for the contemporary service.  I asked "what's a contemporary service?"  It was all new to me, having grown up in a very traditional hymn-based church all my life.  So I tried it out and got hooked right away.  I've been playing praise/worship music ever since for the same church.

Three years ago a bunch of current and ex-church band members threw around the idea of forming an independent praise/worship band. At that time I decided I needed new equipment.  My old stuff was used back in the mid 80's and totally beat up/crappy quality.  So I bought a 5-piece Pearl Export kit with some new cymbals.  I eventually added a Gibraltar drum rack to make things easier to port around. Since we formed the band called inneedofgrace we have played one Sunday a month at a church in the next town over.  Just last week we started a weekly Thursday night contemporary service.  Since it is too much work to lug all my drums there every Thursday night, I decided to buy some congas and percussion instruments.  Thus my screen name means percussionist in German.

Friday night our band plays at its first coffeehouse.  We have also been asked to play at another church in the near future.  Things are really getting interesting, and we get nothing but compliments everywhere we play.  I am so blessed to be able to do this as a hobby.

Hello Everybody ...Bart.
Well actually i'm old here, the Mouse returns for some inspiration.Remember me i'm the southernmost VIP member in the world of Drummer Cafe.
After a finish up of band after 8 years with a good innings ( the vocalist went and got hitched) last year, my wife (bass) and i decided to continue and start afresh with a new repotopire and tend toward the rockier end of the scale away from the wedding stuff we had bored ourselves to tears with (but got gigs). A new guitarist, vocalist and we were heading for local stardom with a good line up, good songs ( Maroon 5, Pink, Pat Benatar, etc)and a few good pre booking gigs under our belt , it then went belly up. The guitarist decides not up to it as yet "lack of confidence". So on the look out for another let's hope not a prima donna this time, and hope to get out and playing again by Xmas. ( we have a huge supply of rockin horse poop here, but when it comes to good guitarists ... ;D)

so meantime, i need a little inspiration while we search for the gat man that is going to fit in and has the drive to get out and perform, and here i remember a great place for just that. I'm currently working through the Fred Dinkins book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0757914101?ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0757914101]It's About Time and i can recommend to any drummer wanting to improve their counting/time/feel skills.
Many changes to the site i found after finding i had to register ( cheez i already had 3 t shirts), and figured out how to open the forum ???.
Anyway all good, great to be back. 8)

P.S currently listening to cd's Kenny Jones's The Jones Gang ...not bad  ;)
and early Amanda Marshall with Kenny Aronoff on drums ....awesome.

I done the same thing. Except I auditioned for the Army Band while in basic training. I ended up beating out over 200 tryouts and was put in the military band. Spent the next 3 years in Colorado Springs. But it was Viet Nam years. I got tired of playing guys out to Nam and seeing many come back in coffins. If it wouldn't have been for that I may have reinlisted. Those were sad years, but I learned alot about drums and met many famous musicians, played for dignitaties during that time. Nice to meet you. ;)

Off topic, but I'll answer just the same.  ;)

65x65 ... however, almost everyone on the forum use full size images, which the forum script has to then resize every time the avatar is displayed. Not a good approach, so I wish everyone would use a smaller image as their avatar; it would speed things up (hint, hint).  8)

If your avatar isn't show up, it's not because of the size; something else is wrong. Send me an Instant Message or email and I'll be happy to assist you.

Hi all. New to the forum. I've been playing drums for about 18 years I think. I am currently in little rock and spent a chunk of time here a while back looking for a drum teacher but could not find one teaching what I wanted to learn. I took lessons for a couple years and was launched me into latin music. Since I stopped going taking lessons I have stopped reading music, which is not good. Now it seems when I "practice" what I really do is play a bunch of stuff I already know. I need to start taking lessons again. Should be back up in the northwest indiana area in a couple weeks. If anyone has any ideas for teachers in that area, I am all ears.

thanks. good stuff. I'm looking for a teacher of either latin, fusion, funk, or most preferably all three :P

I took lessons with Lanny Turner of Gary. He really gave me the octane I needed at the time but then one day pretty much said "well, that's about all I can teach ya".. haha, oh well. I knew there was almost an infinite amount more stuff we could have worked on. Loved chopping through this Horacio Hernandez book, doing all the left foot clave stuff, etc. I just haven't read drum music in so long that it all more or less looks like hieroglyphics now.

Hello Drummer Cafe people. Let me introduce myself. My name is Mike and I live in a Northwest suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have played drums since the 6th grade which was, I'll just say a long time ago. I have recorded and performed in many Minneapolis based bands including 80's heavy rockers Scream Parade and some popular club bands like Decade and Arena. I am currently in an original rock project which has been putting together a demo and working towards getting a live show together. We are also possibly looking to add a 5th member if the right person comes along.

I am also an avid off road motorcycle racer. I have been involved in racing for more than 25 years and still can't get enough.

Drumming and racing seem to go together for me and allways have.

Some drummers who have paved my path over the years include: Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Peter Criss, Alex Van Halen, Lars Ulrich, Charlie Benante, Nicko McBrain, Steve Smith, Deen Castranovo, and local great Adrian Liberty.

New member here, kind of.  I used to be a member years ago and have been busy with work, kids, etc so I hadn't posted in ages.  I guess my profile was inactive too long so I just re-registered.

Anyway, I've been playing drums for about 24 years, never full time as a career.  I've been in a few bands, but mainly play with my buddies that I have known for years as well as my father in law, who has converted his garage into our practice area complete with A/C, heat and refrigerator!  So, it is truly our man-cave, our home away from home, and our place to relax and make music.

I have 2 kits:  Tama Starclassic Performer in red sparkle fade, and my old pearl exports, which are converted into an electronic kit for practice/jamming at home.  Snares: Pearl FF piccolo with Brass and maple shell, Starclassic Birch, Pork Pie Big Brass, Pearl Dennis Chambers Signature, and DW Collectors Solid Maple Shell.

So, glad to be back and looking forward to some good conversations on the forum.

Hey everyone!  I'm Dave, and I'm almost 21 years old.  I was really into drumming throughout high school... I was the marching and concert band and always dreamed of drumming for a corps someday.  Unfortunately, after my senior year, I kind of let it go.  I've been trying to get back on my game lately, and I figured this would be a great place to go to learn.

Here's a recent video of me, if you're interested... nothing introduces a drummer better than seeing him play. :)

I look forward to learning from you, helping with whatever I can, and having discussions with other talented percussionists.

I can't believe I am just now finding Drummer Cafe!

I'm Brett and I've been playing drums/percussion for about 15 years now.  Playing in a quite a few bands here and there, and I've done a bit of studio work.  Nothing big name or anything but still good experience.  I'm currently working on a getting a Blues/Funk project together and I really can't wait for things to get started with it here in the next few weeks.  Although I consider myself a pretty versatile drummer, as I play Rock, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Latin, and everything in between.  My latest groove that I've been woodshedding is the Songo, as I am playing "On Fire" by Michele Camillio with the OU Jazz Percussion Ensemble, and the drumset part is very songo oriented.

I attend Ohio University and I have been involved in their Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Percussion Ensemble, and was one of the members who performed at PASIC 2009 with the OU Percussion Ensemble.

I can't wait to look around more and get to know everyone!

Hello folks!  I've been lurking in he shadows for a few months and thoroughly dig this scene.  I've been playing for 41 years and have seen it all; the highs and lows of touring, personalities, teaching, playing local gigs, the drugs, alcohol and knives in backs so to speak... I've played '60s Rock, Country, Blues, Broadway musicals, (not ON Broadway) R & B, Big Band & Swing, New Age, Celtic...

I've been inspired, jaded, depressed and rejuvenated many times and I'm still here!

Glad to meet you all.

Hi there :)

I'm brand new in here, so I'll quickly introduce myself. I was looking for a pool of musicians, people with whom I could share my drumming passion, that unfortunately I started to late if u ask me!

Been drumming for less than I year, started out learning by myself some Metallica songs... yeah, it's not quite the easiest but at that time, I didn't know ^^

And couple months ago, just thought it was time for me to take some lessons and get the technicals stuff, have someone show me and help me to progress.

I'm more of a metal/rock player but euh... well let's say that metal is little too heavy for me still, which makes me a rock music drummer that aspires to be a metal drummer eventually lol. I just got into the double bass pedal this week, working simple double bdrum beats to get my legs working ... they are soooo retarded, at least it's getting better.

Maybe u guys have exercises that could help me ? So I work part time and drum full time until I get back in school in september ;)

I think I'm going nuts with it... well doesn't matter! I'm glad to be part of your drum community, hoping to get to know other drummers and exchange about it :)

Hi Kim....Well, there's a lot more to playing drums than just learning to kick double bass pedals.
Matter of fact, many of us can use a single pedal as fast plus sound better than many drummers.  Many can play metal, jazz, rock, country, blues, etc., and don't even feel the need for a double pedal. Lessons are a must to help beginners learn a lot more than just pedal control.  ;)  Welcome to drumming.  8)

Hell yeah, you're right but.... it's just a personnal challenge to be able to use it well. There is little things I wish to learn for my very own pleasure, no showing off matter ^^ in fact, I couldn't... I'm still very shy about playing in front of others  ;D

My drum teacher is not showing how to use, just trying to learn it by myself, as an on-the-side goal. He's actually a great Jazz player, not my style but he rocks  8)

Thanks for the welcoming!

This is my first post here at DC, so hello to all. I've been playing drums semi-professionally since the late 60's, and still play in two cover bands, freelancing when I have the time in my schedule. I also play guitar in my own band, The Burgundy Watch.

I have written for Modern Drummer, Classic Drummer, Drumhead, Vintage Guitar, Premier Guitar, Guitar Player, Blues Revue, Blues Access, and many other magazines, and am author of the book, Great Rock Drummers Of The Sixties.

There's a lot of practical drumming knowledge I can pass along to younger drummers. Just ask and I'll try and help if I can.

I'm privileged and proud to endorse DW drums, Pro-Mark sticks, and Evans drum heads, and value my relationships with these companies highly.

Hello Everyone,

I'm Dave and I've become a drumaholic.  I've only been playing about 3 months and I've really been bitten with this bug and enjoy every minute of it.  I think I got started on a good foot by getting a good instructor.  Right now I probably don't have much to add to the forums (being so new) but I'll contribute where I can.  So far this has been a great resource for me and I've learned a lot from all of you.

I live around the Springfield, MO area.  I hope to get out the area and see some of you play.

Thanks the help you given me (just by following the boards) and keep up the great website.

Take care,

Dave Kayser

Hello Drummers,

My name is Adam and I've been playing the drum set for about 13 to 14 years now. Currently majoring in music education at a small private college called Concordia University and studying percussion and drums with Sean Dobbins in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My main focus right now is trying to get my mallet and music reading chops up to par. Iv'e had an account here before I felt it was time to return and see what else I can learn from the community. I'm a session drummer, play in 2 bands, and giving instructions for beginner drummers. Don't need to say I'd play drums for the rest of my life, provided I always had a little bread and water ;)

I'm hoping to push my drumming to another level soon, although I can't rally explaint what it means.

Hey everyone, I am also new. I probably should have been apart of this a long time ago. I am 27 years old originally from Louisana. I now live in Midd Tenn area. I am a professional drummer. I tour with Broken Bow Records artist James Wesley. I also road manage for Wesley. I do session work as often as I can, and I teach one day or two days a week when not touring or studio.

I love vintage drums, I collect and restore them as a hobby. I love football, mainly college football. I am also a fantasy football freak.

I am blessed to be able to live my dreams. I make a living by doing what I always dreamed of since I picked up the sticks over 12 years ago.

I play Gretsch and Ludwig drums. I have endorsements with Soultone cymbals, and Innovative Sticks. If your not familiar with either one I would recommend you check them out. Innovative Percussion is one of the best kept secrets in the sticks world... in my opinion!

great to be here and talk drums with drummers!! Thanks Bart, cool site!

I'm not technically new here, but I haven't posted here for many years now, so a proper introduction is in order.

I'm  http://about.me/eskil.seter]Eskil , 31 years old from Bergen, Norway. I play drums in two rock bands,  http://www.luckylewmusic.com]Lucky Lew  and  http://www.malice-in-wonderland.com]Malice In Wonderland .

I've been a drumming fanatic all my life. I have no idea where the interest came from, but I can clearly remember making a drum kit on my bed consisting of books, pan lids and various other things and banging on them with my mom's knitting needles at a very young age. My parents got me one of those plastic toy drumkits at some point (which I destroyed very quickly) and then moved me up to a proper kit a little while later. This would have been in the late 80s, and the kit was an ancient, beat up Remo kit. I had no idea what I was doing, although I did manage to emulate some basic rock beats without any form of guidance other than listening to my cassette tapes.

At about age 14, I figured that guitar was much cooler, so I sold (or gave away, I can't remember) my crappy kit (which I'm sure my parents were more than happy about) and started playing guitar. At this point, my drumming skills were still pretty much laughable, so I'm pretty sure the world didn't miss much. I played guitar for a few years, and I got reasonably prficient at it.

However, my first love was still drumming, and by this point I'd really started to watch and listen to drummers very intently. When I was 22, my college roommate bought himself a Roland TD-8 electronic kit, and after a few weeks I was playing it a lot more than he was. The spark was rekindled. The other factor that kicked me back into drumming was that around the same time I had really run out of money, and I found myself having to sell all of my guitar gear.

So, fast forward another couple of years and I had moved to Australia to study abroad for a few years. I met another musician in one of my classes, and we started a coverband, just for the fun of it. This was the first band I played in as a drummer, and although I still had a lot to learn about playing with others and playing live, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

In late 2006 I moved back to Norway, and after a while I found myself a band called Lucky Lew, and a couple of years later I joined another band called Malice In Wonderland. Lucky Lew recorded and released our latest album in 2010 (see  http://www.drummercafe.com/forum/index.php/topic,19976.msg296440.html#msg296440]this post  for a couple of tracks from that album), and Malice In Wonderland are currently mixing our second full length album which will (hopefully) be out later this year.

So yeah, that's me.

Summary (tl;dr): Rock & roll meathead from Bergen, Norway, hitting things with sticks  ;D

And to finish off, one of my many drummerfaces:

Post by: Michael Smalley on February 12, 2012, 05:29 AM
I'm Michael. Michael Smalley. Or just Smalley as many have taken to calling me. Yes. That is my real last name. Yes I've had many many teasing sessions throughout school with it...What? I don't see what /that/ has to do with /this/!!! I thought I got rid of all the photographic evidence anyway....and no...they didn't press charges that time...I...umm...

Anyway!

I'm 30 as of last December. I've been drumming since I was five years old. My Dad was a drummer. I'm a drummer. My brother is a drummer. My eight year old daughter is showing interest and promise as well! Speaking of which. I'm married to a wife who manages to put up with me named Brandi, and a very odd child named Chloe.

I've been in three "serious" bands. My longest stint is with one my friend and I started: Warehouse 86.

I've been into computers since sixth grade, and I find them, like drums to be oddly calming. It's like my mind slows to normal. I've been designing webpages back in the days of AOL and Prodigy when 5 megs of webspace was worth more than Brittany Spears underpants on eBay. So...I've taken that...and I contract myself out with it. Computers, web and graphics design.

I've taken a real shine to graphics design...always have. Hell, the first time I really did anything graphical was changing a scanned in report card for an ex-girlfriend. *whistles innocently* I enjoy using my capabilities and my undiagnosed ADHD and coming up with new designs for everything I can for my band. I just finished the graphics for our upcoming E.P. "Rusted Memories", designed a new band logo, (slight change), and even finished out a running "thing" we have with using some sort of gasmask I designed as sort of a logo. I just finished the order for the custom football jersey bearing such.

I've been doing ranting articles since the inception of Geocities, and I've had my own domain to post up whatever I please (usually rants, raves, random stuff I and my friends thought was funny) for a little over a decade. I write it to vent, laugh, and share in other's frustration and give them something to nod in agreement about. Plus I just find it fun and funny. Nothing better than that.

I collect Transformers. Still. I'm not a hoarder. I swear! Those 16 30 gallon tubs of boxed and unboxed Transformers seperated by series and generation means nothing! As you can see...I may also be insane. I'm not sure. The medicine seems to help with some of it...but I'm like Murdoc of the A-Team. Can't tell if I'm really crazy, or just doing it for my own entertainment.

I (well..my daughter lays claim to them too!) currently play on a PDP X7 Red Sparkle Fade kit. This is my third PDP set. I love them. I use Tama Ironcobra Pedals and Hihat stand, and Roadpro Boom Stands. I play on Zildjian cymbals. *kisses his babies*

Yeah... I think I just revealed enough to make people look around cautiously. Heh.

Nice to be here. Nice to meet you.

YaY I now am able to get back to drumming, and reading more drum sites, hopefully to join in again. A lot has changed even this site, some sites have passed and no longer exist, so congrats to Bart. Also people are catching up to ideas in drum equipment improvements, I hope to still lead. I look forward to the future and this site, so hello again.

Louis,

Hello from Eugene!
Title: Re: I'm New Here ... (introduce yourself)
Post by: Edwin Francis on May 16, 2012, 01:33 PM
Hi guys!

My Name is Edwin, I'm from Singapore! and no we're not from China, and yes we speak, write and study English as our main language! But we have a local slang called "Singlish" which you will experience either meeting a Singaporean, or being in Singapore! It's something, that's just there, but isn't actually encouraged. And yes, we're a country on our own! I'm also a dyslexic, so mind the horribly grammar or lack or vocab or whatever =p

Anyway, I started getting serious about drumming this year, about 2 months ago. What inspired me was seeing so many great local drummers of the same age as me jazzing up the kit and also shred it apart with their awesome chops, and make the kit sound so alive and all. Being so tight with their band and the music... Which really made me go "gosh, I have to be able to do that one day, it'd be so awesome and fun!" and well I kind of fell in love with musical theatre too after watching Wicked the musical! =P. Which kinda led me to... well research on how one makes a break into the Broadway Orchestra Pit as a drummer, which I as of now do not know if that's a feasible dream =p seeing as where I stand technically as a drummer, plus my age (19/20 years old), Singapore's musical theatre scene, my lack of Orchestra experience, which also means I don't really know how to follow a conductor and knowing that I have to be super good at what I want to do, and be able to read a chart/score sheet as if I'm reading my ABCs or something like that.

So I guess it's been an interesting journey, as I started off a few years ago when my older brother got his drumset, and yes he's a drummer too =P but he's more a of musician then I'll ever be as he plays guitar and stuff too, which makes it pretty fun when he's back home (he's currently studying aboard which leaves the drum set at my mercy), we can jam together and stuff, when we're both bored at home.

I learned playing by ear and was playing open-handed, without knowing it wasn't your typical way of playing, and now I'm sitting down trying to re-learn everything, learning how to read and count not doing a Right-Hand-Over-Left thing when I play on my ride, getting a teacher and stuff like that. I'm really enjoying it! The challenge and the frustration. All that gets me excited, every lesson I go to, is almost as good as going for my first driving lesson! That kind of trill. Except that you don't have to worry about crashing the car or something, which makes it more fun =p

Well to end off, as you guys can probably guess, I'm here to learn more about drumming from you guys, and hopefully one day I'll be able to give back to the drumming community here.

Cheers!
Edwin

I am originally from Tel Aviv, Israel but relocated to Los Angeles, CA about 2 years ago.
I grew up playing a lot of Rock and Pop music but as the years went by I've gotten deep into Reggae, Funk, RnB and Hip Hop as well.
And that's it in a nutshell I guess.

Post by: Walter Beyer on May 27, 2012, 09:27 PM
Hey all, 1st post.

After a 10 year hiatus from the local scene, I'm going back in feet first.
I sold my Yammy stage customs outfitted with a rack & Z's & A's and thought I'd never play again.

Fast forward a recent friendship has rekindled my desire to play & write again... I've always kept a book of words, (songs) since the sale. Well, my Sister in law started dating a guitar player, and well, I got pumped!!!!
I'm 35, played till I was 25 from age 10 or so, now, at 35 I have a new kit and new outlook. I'm stoked, the wife is stoked. Glad to be here!!

Walter

Hi fellow drummers. I play rock drums in a classic rock, blues influenced band in New York. Besides playing drums, I'm also learning to sing back up and lead vocals while playing. I enjoy the challenge and the ability to express myself tonally as well as rhythmically.

Hey guys, I guess it's my turn to introduce myself here...
I've been a member for a while, I actually thought I'd introduced myself before but I lost my username and password for here so couldn't check till now... Well, here goes:

Hi, I'm Luke, I'm from Manchester in England and I'm 35 years old.
I've been a drummer for the best part of 30 years (I had to stop playing kit when I couldn't find anywhere to store it for rehearsals for about 3 years, not a good feeling...).

I've owned three different kits in my life:
* An orange Premier Club jazz 4-piece
* A teal Tama Granstar 7-piece
* My current Mapex Meridian Birch 6-piece.

22" x 18" (x2) bass drums
12"x 8", 13" x 9" rack toms
14" x 14", 16" x 16" ground toms
14" x 5.5" Meridian snare, 14" x 5.5 Black Panther snare

I play in a rock and heavy metal covers band called Fretsaw
( http://www.youtube.com/fretsawband]Youtube Channel ,  http://www.facebook.com/fretsawband]Facebook Page )
but I also enjoy playing stuff like The Crusaders and L L Cool J (yes, really).

Greetings DrummerCafe,  Not only am I new to this community, I am new to drumming altogether.  I've been playing guitar for just about 30 of my 38 years but always had a secret love of drums and drumming.  Just about a month ago, for my mid-life crisis, I decided to take up lessons and I can't be happier with my decision.  I've had 3 lessons so far and at my last one got to play my first beat and that changed everything.  It was so much fun, even though it was very simple, and now I just can't get enough playing.

Anyway, I'm hopeful to use this community to learn, see some awesome drummers and drumsets and share a few laughs.  I'm glad to be here and I'll see you all around, --Scott

Hello Drummer Cafe!

My name is Paul. I am a drummer(ok I try to play the drums) from Kent, OH. I've been playing for about ten years now. I like many styles of drumming. I can listen to the double bass extravaganza type playing all the way to blues shuffles.

I have a couple sets right now. I have a DW workshop series and a Mapex, uh.... let's go see, just bought it used... ah, it's an M series ( anyone have one of these? It's one of the older sets). Sabian HH cymbals, love my HH duo crash and fusion hats. The ride is good but I'd like one of their artisan rides. Just picked up the Iron Cobra Double pedals with that Mapex set. Wow, are they fast and smooth! I was really surprised at the difference between them and my DW7000 single pedal that I've been pounding away on for the last several years.

Well, that's a little about me. Looking forward to getting to know you all and learning more about the drums and drumming!

Paul

Hi Paul,
I have two older Mapex sets and an older DW set. As far as I'm concerned the Mapex sets are just as good as the DW set. One of my Mapex sets is made of cherrywood and the other is a maple set. My DW set is also made of maple. I do have to admit the DW set has a much nicer finish to it. But the sound is great with either set. Welcome to Drummer Cafe, it's the best drum site around.  ;)

Poppin in for a look, been busy forming a band last two which has been a comedy of errors, but finally got a steady line up, did two gigs recently which went really well, and secured pencilled bookings for next year from them. Vocalist decides is too busy in day job to commit and leaves, then bass player and guitarist follow in same breath??? Was it the colour of my shirt?

So back i'm to scratch, and so have time to re-visit drummer web sites, until i can find some other muso's. Still doing an excellent job here Bart  8)

Well, after drifting away from the drums 25 years ago, I found myself holding a pair of sticks last March. In those 25 years I managed to learn to play(well, I call it playing) guitar. I have a small collection of electric and acoustic's. But in the back of my mind I always knew the road of life would lead me back to them. And it has. First came the sticks and pad last March. I was never very good and didn't take but a few lessons. I just loved to play my rag tag POS thrown together set. And when I say POS I mean it. Beat up drums held together with duck tape. The one thing I did have were some good cymbals. Back to the story. I practiced when I could and that meant the dreaded rudiments that I never learned back then. And then a defining moment. I work on Long Island in the summer and in Florida during the winter. I have a condo in Florida so a real acoustic kit was out of the question. But an electric one..........Roland, Yamaha, Alesis.......I was close to making a call when I found myself at the Gretsch website one day. I saw their limited edition Renown 57 kits. But when I looked online at the prices I couldn't justify spending $1500-2000 on a set I couldn't play in my condo. This was back in June or July. I didn't buy anything but kept my eye on the Renown's at ebay. Fast foward to September and all of a sudden the price started dropping. And dropping..........and dropping. I didn't think I could pull the trigger.......but I did. 5 piece Gretsch Renown 57 in Motor City Red! For $800 shipping included. To be continued tomorrow.........Thanks all for looking in.

The(//) Gretsch Renown 57 kit in red.. I had to set it up in a small space between the dining room and living room. I originally set it up just for a few people to see. I have already bought cases for them. But I found out about drum silencers. Now I'm thinking about leaving it up all season! Still working on my cymbal set up. The hi hats are Paiste Signature 14" Dark Crisp. These were bought back in the late 80's or maybe very early 1990's and never used. Paiste 3000 20" ride. Brand new Paiste 2002 15" crash and a Paiste Rude 20" crash/ride. I will probably replace the two 20" cymbals. The ride sound ok, but I want a little more ping and a little less wash. The Rude I got cheap and it's just too heavy  as a crash. I thought I could upload a picture. I guess I can't. Oh well.......

I started to play drums as a kid in grade school ,toyed around with them for a few years but gave them up for the guitar, played in a couple of bands over the years, but the drum bug kept biting me.So when I hurt my arm and couldn't grip the guitar anymore that was my chance.Anyways, long story short, have been playing the drums about 2 years now and play in a church praise band,I love christian rock.I am happy to be a part of the community.Own  mid 80's Pearl DLX and a 98' Yamaha Stage Custom sets.

Hi folks. My name is Jimmy but you can call me by my username, which is actually a nickname given to me by a band mate in the 90's. I'm 47 years of age and have been playing drums in and around the Tupelo Mississippi area since the mid 80's. My playing experience for the most part has been classic rock, country, and blues. But I love all kinds of music.
I'm new to the whole internet forum thing ,I found this one browsing through tapatalk ,with my phone.
I am presently playing in a small three piece band called the Dinosaurs ( because were old and play old music.;) )
So far from what I've read this forum seems like it might be really helpful and there seems to be a lot of good people here.

Hey everyone!  I was looking for a good drumming forum and I read several things that pointed me here.  I'm looking to make connections in the drumming community, find advice, learn, grow, and help others if I can.

A little bit about me:

I've been playing for about 27 years.  Thanks to my parents, I actually started when I was 3.  I took lessons from a local jazz legend, Larry Donely, from age 5 through 20.  Several years ago I started teaching students, which I've found to be a real joy - most of the time!  I like most genres of music; my favorite being progressive rock.  I'm currently in a jazz/pop trio.  Ultimately I'd love to make a living being a session musician, but for now I'm stuck with the normal day to day job that pays the bills.  If I could live the dream, it would be recording drums/percussion for movies and tv shows.

Since I'm new I won't post any videos here (not sure if that's proper forum edicate or not!), but if you're interested you can click the link in my signature.  It'll point you in the right direction  8)

Looking forward to getting involved, and thanks for letting me be a part of your community!

- Scott

I'm new also. Found this site searching for threads based on the significance of "1" in music. I have played w many"phrase hearers" but am convinced that this lack of knowledge on their part hurts the overall cohesiveness of the band. How many players out there do not recognize that there is a pattern to what they play. You start and finish somewhere! That would be......"1" know where it is!

2/3 of the musicians I've met over the years has been like that. Of course you won't recognize it until you've played with real musicians who has many styles of playing ability.

Love the people in our band and they are great players. I call them parrots or mocking birds. They can pretty much reproduce what they hear with no true concept of what they're saying. How can you dynamically lead yourself towards "1"if u don't know where it is! 2/3 of "musicians "out there.. do urself a favor. UNO!

Hello Drummer Cafe!

My name is Paul Jennings.

I have been a drummer & percussionist for about 20 years (wow! I can now say things like "20 years ago" that came fast)

I have been very fortunate to travel far and wide as a drummer and also play with some great people. If you would like to know more about that you can go here:  http://www.drummerpercussionist.com/]http://www.drummerpercussionist.com/

In 2011 I set up the cajon lesson website  http://www.playcajon.org]www.playcajon.org   which gives the user access to over 150 video lessons about the cajon drum.

I also own an online percussion store and distrobution company called Paul Jennings Music LLC. You can find us here:  http://www.pauljenningsmusic.com]www.pauljenningsmusic.com

This all keeps me far to busy and sometimes its hard to find the time to practice anymore but I still try to* make sure I get a few hits in every day.

I am glad I have finally joined this fantastic forum, Thank you Bart! I look forward to some great discussion.

All the best,

Paul.

Hi there drummers one and all.
What's there to tell.. real name Stuart.. 55 and feeling every day of it at the moment. Been a drummer since I was 8 (pipe bands and did that up to about 21).. played in my mothers old time dance band for years (and to this day it was the best paying gigs I ever had.. 3 times  a week and (any) money when you were 14 was magic. Gave up for a couple of decades (working overseas, Wife, kids.. you know the drill) and took it back up about 7 years ago. Kit wise.. a set of Pearl Forums which do solid duty for reheasals, a Slingerland kit.. not vintage but a made in Asia version with a few Cocobola (?) plies. Despite the Asia origins and costs I have zero complaints about the quality of the finish or sound. Picking up a new kit this weekend.. Sleishman, 100% Bubinga 8/10/12/14/16 and 20.. no snare (yet), have a bunch of snares Pearl free floater, Acrolite, Tama King Star, Carlton Classic, Dandy, A Yamaha 12" that I'm loving really cranked up.. too many cymbals, Bosphorus, Instanbul Mehmet, and  Istanbul Agop, Vintage Zildjians, Zyn Supers, ... lots of turkish stuff that I bought when I visited straight from the factory. But all the gear in the world doesn't mean I can play worth a @$%#. Play Rock, Pop, Jazz and a Mozambique that only the walking dead could dance to.
Looking forward to the forum

Cheers

Hi folks, I'm Stefan, 61, from Colorado. Have been playing since I was about 10, though did take about 15 years off from playing, until I started back in earnest, some 13 years ago. Had (and still have) an older set of Ludwig Club Dates, which I finally retired, for a new set of Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Nouveus, which I purchased in 2010. I have a jazz background, played country and rock in college, and now play old school R & B, in a group I co-founded 7 years ago.  We try and gig out about 2x/month, but that doesn't always happen. Glad I happened upon this forum and had a chance to check in.  :)

Hi folks. I'm new here, but spent some time here in the mid 2000's. Took a long break from active drumming to teach, study, raise my daughter and learn as much as I could without a regular gig. Cymbalholic took most of my online time and I'm trying something new. Daughter #2 on the way in the next week! Finally  reunited with some old musical buddies and had the opportunity to work on a EP for a singer / songwriter named Sara Morgan from KC and Arkansas. Live in Little Rock now and record and play whenever I have an opportunity. Here is a song that is one of my favorites from the new record. I hope you like it and look forward to learning more from the mass expertise on this site. Hello to all my cymbalholic friends and hello to drummer cafe friends I hope to meet.  Best regards, Chris

Hello, my name is Yann. I'm a complete beginner at drumming, but I co-invented an air drumming instrument with a drummer friend. I'm joining drummer café to participate around discussions about air-drumming, and more I hope.

I'm really excited the instrument made Drummer Café's news today :)

I have a small hobby business making drums, but more importantly, I've been playing and digesting all things drum for 38 years.

G'day,

My name's John, and I'm drumming just outside of Ottawa Canada in Aylmer Quebec.  I've got about 20 years experience behind kit, mostly playing in volume sensitive situations (small churches and coffee bars).  I've probably clocked more time with brushes or lightning rods in my hands than actual sticks.  I usually find myself in the folk/jazz/blues genre, but occasionally get a call to fill in rock/blues gigs.

Here's a rough sample of the types of things I'm doing these days.  And by rough, I mean it was recording on an iPhone by a passer-by while we were having an outdoor jam.  You drum geeks will probably get a kick out of the fact that I'm playing a K Constantinople attached to a Samsonite suitcase using a vice-grip wrench ;)

Hey-hey!
I am a Los Angeles based drummer. Currently, a little out of practice on the kit...idiophones are what I am perfecting, currently.

I studied for a year at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, California. Great place! Good info. and friendly folks. Though, you must be prepared for the rapid pace and various class assignments. Grasping how to read drum notation was a bit tricky for this 1st timer!

If you have the cash, I recommend the experience. There's nothing like bonding with percussive bretherin in a class setting taught by top professionals in the biz! It's also great place to network and meet musician's of varying instruments. It's also cool, because you get to find yourself as an artist. You're not limited to what you normally listen to, the music scene there is so grand, you may go in a rocker but come out a aspiring country artist or world music master!

Plus: drums, drums, drums 24/7! It's heavenly! You'll never forget the simultaneous sound of various drummers attempting to master their craft. It's like the majestic roaring from a pack of lions. Nice!  =-)

Currently, I live in an apt. complex and don't have the freedom to play as I'd like.
As a way to keep the musician in me satisfied, I have made a few purchases in the hand percussion dept.
I have collected a few idiophones. I have others, smaller versions of some, this is what I use:
*Meinl Nino mini-conga
*LP Rock Shaker
*Trophy 8" triangle
*Meinl Nino Jingle Sticks
*Tycoon Percussion guiro
&
*Meinl Percussion 8.25" Claves.

I also have what I believe is an Indian Tumbaknaer Drum. Been with me a while, before I considered myself a percussionist, it's a little damaged. Still has a lovely sound, though.

Out of the idophones I have, I find teh guiro is the hardest to understand.
Jingle sticks are a sort of tamborine with a handle. They are very cool, don't see them used often in mainstream music. Though, they work really well in many radio-friendly tunes.

I have a variety of egg shakers, also. Since I've gotten the rock shaker, though, it's my 'go to' for shakin'. I used to be quite good, not so much anymore.

This is due to what I believe are electro-magnets surrounding me and a group of Mexican gangsters that are quite irresponsible with how they use them! I seem to have trouble getting the local authority to take me seriously. Hopefully, this will change soon.

Aside from the musicianship, I also write. I like writing poetry and have recently began creating my own conga exercise charts.
At some point, I also plan on getting started on charts for other idiophones.

And I looooove cats! Animals, in general, really.

That is me in a nutshell. Hope to learn some insightful stuff from ye in the future. I have browsed this forum before and find it quite cool, I usually frequent pop culture forums. Nice to find a place for the keepers of time!

Check out the 1st conga exercise chart that I created. It's meant to inspire creativity.
The time signature and lack of a 'true' pattern is meant to help you develop how to create your own drum solos. The time and lack of pattern is also meant to aide you 'break free' and move your hands in alternating strokes for creating the best beats and solos.

Of course, don't rush and start at a slower tempo to have your hands, wrists and other essential body parts develop all the right muscles that will help you be the fastest and strongest player you can be!

The exercise is derived from a text book: "Encyclopedia Of Reading Rhythms" by Gary Hess. Recommended!
Let me know what you think! I like the feedback.  =-)
Happy day, to ye!

Post by: Tony Trout on May 25, 2015, 08:29 PM
Hi, gang!

My name is Tony Trout and I, also, just joined the forum today.  I found ya'll while just surfing the internet for other drum forums and I'm so happy that I did!  I've been playing all kinds of instruments for years but I started out playing drums in my old home church - then I switched to electric guitar, acoustic guitar, slide guitar, lap steel, piano/keyboards, drums & I'm also a singer.

My favorite music styles are from the 1950s/1960s/1970s.  I'm not so enthralled by today's music that's on the radio, unfortunately.

I'm a huge...HUGE fan of the legendary drummer who worked with Elvis Presley from 1969-1977...and that drummer would be:  Ronnie Tutt!  I'll be getting an autographed photo of Ronnie next month after he gets off of the road with Neil Diamond.  I didn't know until several years ago that Ronnie has worked for Neil for thirty-five years (since 1980!) but I have often wondered what he did for work during the time after Elvis's death in 1977 and getting hired by Neil in '80?

Here lately I've been seeing drummers who are big fans of Ronnie that have actually put together their own (what they refer to as) Ronnie Tutt Tribute drum kits based upon the blue sparkle drum set that Ronnie used with Elvis from 1970 - 1974 before Ronnie switched to the larger black Ludwig kit.  I'm disabled with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus and I'm not able to work a regular real job - but I do play music and I love using the drum sets that are on my two keyboards to play along with my Elvis Presley live concert and studio CDs!

I would absolutely LOVE IT if I knew how to do about getting the drum sizes/drums and cymbals and stands and be able to start setting up my own RT "Tribute" drum kit......but, I don't know where to start and I know absolutely nothing about tuning a drum set.  :-(

Another problem is that I don't have even the smallest of space as far as buildings go to be able to set up that type of double-bass drum setup unless I can get someone here close to me to do that for me....:-(

The above is NOT written to sound or read like a pity party posting- it's just facts.  I truly DO want to put together a Ronnie Tutt Tribute drum kit like I've seen a couple of other friends of mine (Brad Swiger & Udo Masshoff) do.

I just don't know where to really start!!

Anyone have any ideas for me?  The whole reason behind wanting a set is that I'm hoping that, by starting back playing drums, it would help me health-wise and help me stay limber since I am afflicted with Cerebral Palsy & Hydrocephalus.....

Any suggestions from anyone???

Thanks for letting me join this great forum!!

Thanks/God Bless,
Tony Trout

Hey there!

I'm Valentina (15) and I joined yesterday, and I like it here, tho I still don't know anyone.
I'm new at drums and my kit includes only my sticks (if they're even a part of a kit XD) but it was love at first sight. Drumming is just amazing and I think you guys are probs the first people to whom I don't have to say 'you have no idea what does it feel when you're sitting there'. :)
Anyway, I live in a small poor country in Europe and I speak English, Spanish, Serbian, and I'm learning French.
Anyway, I'm a quick learner and I hope I will get to my current goal in 6 months. I also play violin and piano tho.

Hey guys, my name is Carson and I'm from Salinas CA, I play in a band called 808: Disturbing the Peace and have been playing for about 2 years. Our bass player went to the Berklee College of Music for a semester but he just recently moved back because "he wasn't being challenged enough" there so 808 is back together and we just recorded a 4 song demo and are getting back into the show scene as we speak! I played a PDP Double Drive 8 piece kit but I think I'm gonna go back to my Ludwig for ease of literally everything, Aquarian heads all around, Axis A21 Laser pedals, ProMark sticks, and I am endorsed by Soultone Cymbals. Looking forward to being a part of the community! Hi All!

My name is Alan, I've been playing drums for around 13 years. Started off playing rock/metal, then lots of other styles, and I'm now venturing much more towards electronic and deep house music. That opens up a lot of cool opportunities for triggers, sampling, etc.

In fact, playing electronic percussion sample pads was my entry into electronic music production. So I'm now working on my own electronic solo project with a big live drum focus, which I'm going to be touring around Europe with this year!

I also have a site dedicated to electronic drumming called http://www.electronicdrumadvisor.com/ (http://www.electronicdrumadvisor.com/) which has guides and articles in the electronic drumming space!

Hello drummer friends!
I am a drummer / percussionist many years now, and continue to love the practice!
My musical preferences are many and eclectic, and I enjoy playing many varied genres.
Similarly, I have played and appreciated the products of many varied brands.  Presently, I am fortunate enough to own a few different unique kits, the "main" one being a North drums based beast.
I primarily play now for health reasons.  As you probably know, the cardio benefit is significant, but also, I happen to have medical issues with all four limbs, which puts focus on coordination, as well.
I am happy to be here, and look forward to brushing shoulders with you!
John

I am still playing drums but not quite as much as I used to, as I have been running my own restaurant for the past 4+ years. Not currently playing in a band but my most recent band was a Tool tribute I played in for about 5 or 6 years. I had stopped playing for a while just because of a hectic life, but last summer I had the pleasure of spending a week with Dweezil Zappa and his whole band....got to play with them and took a private lesson with Ryan Brown, his drummer. That got my juices flowing again and I am making time for music again...coming back here is just another way of stimulating my need to play drums...Good to see ya!

Like several of you in recent posts, I'm not new here, but haven't been actively posting on the forum since -- wow -- early 2012. Life happens sometimes.  But with it, hopefully a bit more understanding and maturity, right?
I just turned 50 last year, and with that milestone I'm feeling more persuaded to be available to share what I've learned over the years, and be a part of others' growth.  So I'm hoping I can do a better job of not just visiting the forum from time to time, but usefully contributing on a regular basis.

Hello, Dan here.     I'm 64, been playing drums for 50 years now. I had 2 carpal tunnel surgeries and a thumb reconstruction in my right dominant hand It is extremely hard to play matched grip in my right hand, and am considering traditional grip in my right hand! Yes, my right hand! Anybody out there been there n done that????

Welcome, Dan!

Glad you are still playing despite all that you've gone through physically. I haven't played reversed Traditional grip much, simply because I haven't had a need... and I've got plenty to work on already.

There are some players out there who play reversed Traditional grip... and are right-handed. One particular individual I've seen do this is Billy Cobham... but he doesn't more for fun (and to show off  ;D ) than doing it out of necessity.

Hey there.  I'm an amateur drummer.  I have been playing since I was about 12 years old, so that works out to about 45 years.  I have been active on and off over the years but I'd say more off than on.  At one point I was able to connect with some people in NYC and we did a number of showcases in the Village at the Bitter End and the Red Lion.  That was more than 15 years ago and I am now trying to work on my playing some more and have been jamming with some guys for fun before covid-19.  Looking forward to some vibrant and healthy discussion about drumming and music and anything else that floats your boat.  Big fan of fusion, jazz, funk, r & b, rock and all things Zappa.
