hi bart. i'm planning on buying a pair of yamaha hs80 m  powered speakers. i also want to get a mixer to hookup with the speakers and my computer. when i play music from youtube would i be able to isolate different instruments in the song. if i use a downloadable mixer on my computer, would i be able to do it? at the very least a simple mixer would be used to control the volume on the powered speakers thus eliminating the need for my old receiver.

To answer your question ... no, this won't work the way you're hoping; you're dealing with stereo files, not multi-tracks.

The only way that you can split out the tracks is to have the original tracks from the recording sessions (multi-tracks), or purchase a play-along product that has mixed this for you in advance.

There is software that isolates certain frequencies to "sort of" remove instruments from the mix, but there's no mixer that can, or could ever, separate instruments within a stereo mix.

thanks bart. the jammit app sounds interesting. i have just finished reading home recording for dummies. i have always been interested in the how-to aspect of recording.
