Hudson Music And The Percussive Arts Society Announce The Selection Of Jake Reed As The Recipient Of The PAS Hudson Music 2008 Drumset Scholarship.
In describing his award-winning application DVD, Jake comments, “The video is from my senior recital which was performed at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati. It’s my arrangement of Victor Feldman’s “Seven Steps to Heaven” in 7/4 time. I chose this video to represent my playing because I felt there was a lot of good interplay happening among the trio. It was one of those exciting, unexplainable musical moments. I’m just thankful that the scholarship selection committee thought so, too.” After growing up near Kansas City, Missouri and attending the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, this year’s award recipient recently relocated to Los Angeles where he is working on a Master Of Music degree at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. According to Jake, his drumming influences range from legendary big band and jazz drummers such as John Von Ohlen, Jeff Hamilton, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, “Papa” Jo Jones, Mel Lewis, Shelly Manne, Max Roach, “Philly” Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobb, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Peter Erskine to contemporary rock and pop players like John Bonham, Steve Jordan, Clyde Stubblefield, David Garibaldi, Airto Moreira and Brian Blade. |
