April Samuels

Dallas drummer, April Samuels, picked up her first pair of drumsticks at the age of 5 and began formal drum lessons at the age of 11. Knowing that she wanted to pursue music as a career, April went on to study music at the Universtiy of North Texas in Denton, TX.

Influenced by such drummers as Carter Beauford, Matt Chamberlain, Taylor Hawkins and Sean Phillips, April has gone on to perform and record with numerous artists and music groups. Her passion, however, goes well beyond playing the drums.

April has been writing and recording on electric and acoustic guitar in her home studio. In fact she has co-wrote several songs that were used in episodes of the show Outward Bound on the Discovery Channel. She's also ran a booking agency, 100 Proof Entertainment, from 1989 to 2010 — booking over 50 different regional bands — handling as many bands as 13 at one time.

Everything was going great for April until one fall day, on October 26, 2010, when her music career came to a quick (temporary) halt; April was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer called triple-negative breast cancer (ER-, PR-, HER2-).

Less than month after her diagnosis, April made it clear she was not about to just sit back and do nothing. In November 2010, April decided to couple her zeal for drumming and will to fight breast cancer by creating the motto (now brand) Breast Cancer Can Stick It! You can find Breast Cancer Can Stick It! on t-shirts, water bottles, bags, bass drumheads and cars all around the country — raising awareness and FUNDS for cancer research, clinical trials, as well as a cure for breast cancer.

After participating in several Susan G. Komen for the Cure events, April decided (in 2013) to turn Breast Cancer Can Stick It! into a fully functioning nonprofit foundation. The mission of Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Foundation, Inc. is to raise awareness and funds for a cure by orchestrating energetic, unique, music-minded events that ROCK to ultimately STICK IT to breast cancer. At the present time, three Texas events are being held annually during the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Corpus Christi. Tesla drummer, Troy Luccketta, as well as fellow female drummer and breast cancer survivor (1999), Athena Lee (little sister to Mötley Crüe drummer, Tommy Lee, and ex-wife of Scoprions drummer, James Kottak), are just several of the celebrity faces that support the foundation and its events.

So where does April stand in her personal fight with breast cancer? Well, after starting her cancer treatmentss on December 27, 2010 ... April has been cancer-free since April 8, 2011! April is doing a LOT of traveling, playing drums full-time with the Dallas-based, 80s spoof-hair-band, Metal Shop, who performs over 120 shows a year. Through her show performances, collaborating with various celebrities for fundraisers, guest appearances and speaking engagements, April continues to 'bring it' ... rocking year-round ... both in front and behind the drumkit.
