Justin Winters - Blue Man Group Boston

Blue Man Group Boston hosted their 4th annual Drum-Off competition at the Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival where Justin Winters, 21 from Springfield, MA was crowned the winner. Justin wowed the rain-soaked crowd during his 3-minute solo performance and won over $6,000 in prizes including a new DW drum kit, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks and accessories, plus tickets and prizes from Blue Man Group.

“Justin did a great job. He was able to move the crowd and had huge personality and that makes a difference,” said Charles Haynes, guest judge and pop/R&B/jazz drummer who has performed with Kanye West, Lady Gaga and Ed Sheeran. “At the end of the day, we are here to move the crowd, to make them dance. And every drummer did that. It was a very hard decision.”

Drummers were assessed on their musicality, creativity and technical ability. Justin beat out four other competitors: Euan Leslie, 18, from Dumfries, Scotland, Tyler Pedersen, 23, from Marblehead, MA, Darryl Reberio Jr., 23, from New Britain, CT. and Nick Villamizar, 22, from Miami, FL.

“It’s literally the most unbelievable experience ever,” said Justin Winters. “I’m at a loss for words right now. I really appreciate the love and support from my family and the crowd. It just feels amazing. This is definitely a milestone in my life.”

The competitors were narrowed down from 45 applicants. The top five finalists had two rehearsals to learn new music so the winner could then perform with Blue Man Group during the finals at Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival.

“The whole spirit of this event is about drumming and community. Every single participant today rose to the occasion and delivered truly inspiring performances,” said Jonathan Screnci, Resident General Manager of Blue Man Group Boston. “What always strikes me about this event is how collegial and supportive the contestants are with each other. They are cheering each other on and forging friendships that carry beyond this competition.”
