The Percussion Center Receives Top 50 Award
Mike Henry, Donna Fisher, Earnest Potts

The Percussion Center, Houston's only music store that specializes in drums and percussion, has been named one of the "Top 50 Fastest Growing Woman-Owned Businesses in Houston". The 50 businesses were honored at a luncheon sponsored by the Houston Business Journal, Omni Bank, Aetna, The National Association of Women Business Owners, and the Women's Business Enterprise Alliance. Donna Fisher, President of the Percussion Center accepted the award celebrating a growth of 156% since 2002 and 20.6% from 2007 to 2008.

The Percussion Center brings in multiple streams of income from the retail store, school of music, educational sales, repair service and online shopping cart. According to Ms. Fisher, Earnest Potts, Educational Director, has been instrumental in the growth of the business by developing strong relationships with school band directors in multiple school districts. Jim Calvert, Director of the School of Music, continues to build our student base offering clinics, showcase events, and jam sessions along with the private lessons in drums, guitar, bass, keyboard and saxophone. Mike Henry, Chief Operating Officer, brings to the business over 25 years of retail experience and 40 years of drumming experience. "What really makes a difference, as a specialty store, is that we have a wonderful staff who are all professional musicians with a love and passion for music and drumming."

The Percussion Center plans to continue expanding by upgrading its online shopping cart, increasing its student base, serving additional school districts and providing quality services to musicians throughout the greater Houston area.

"Being a female-friendly store and a community-oriented business are both important to me", says Ms. Fisher, who remembers feeling conspicuous and out-of-place when (in her thirties) she took drum lessons at a different store.

The Percussion Center is the organizing sponsor of the Texas BigBeat, a drumming charity event that raises funds to help provide instruments and educational programs for Houston's youth through Cherish Our Children International and The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. The Texas BigBeat is one of 11 cities hosting a Five-Star Drum Shops Big Beat Event on November 1, 2009. www.texasbigbeat.com
