Rodger Carter, drummer for Rick Springfield, played a Trash Kat floor tom in his drum kit at the Daytime Emmy Award Show, televised last week. ThunderEcho Drums’ co-owners are ecstatic over the prime time exposure for their year-old product. Medina OH, May 3, 2006: This sleepy little Victorian-era town of Medina, Ohio is home to some loud drums, heard all the way to Hollywood and beyond.  ThunderEcho Drums is a small drum-building company located just off the historic town square, owned by the son-and-mother team Kevin and Jane Reed. Kevin, a disabled drummer, created the Trash Kat, an urban looking drum made from a galvanized trash can. But it is the complex sound that gets drummers’ attention, “Kind of like a kettle drum with snare drum harmonics,” explains Kevin. That sound is being heard nationally, most recently at the Daytime Emmy Awards Show, held in Hollywood, California. Rick Springfield’s drummer, Rodger Carter, sporting a flame-red goatee, played the Trash Kat in his drum kit in their rousing, opening medley on prime time television. “Everyone probably heard Kevin cheer when he saw Roger with the Kat on TV,” said Jane, laughing. The list of well-known artists drumming the Kat has been growing. John Mahon, Elton John’s percussionist is using it in his personal studio in California. Adrian Young of No Doubt added one to his kit for live gigs with one of his side projects. Justin Spencer features a Trash Kat solo on an entire track of Recycled Percussion’s latest DVD, Live at Allegheny. Frank Zummo’s Street Drum Corps’ played it on the Warped Tour and on their self-titled, inaugural CD. Steve Gryb entertains thousands of families annually using the Kat in his children’s shows. The Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho integrates the drum in concert band, marching band, orchestra and choir. Chicago steel drum band Od Tapo Imi uses three in their act and even Ohio jazz drummer, Tom Fries, includes a Kat on tracks on his Mellow Blend CD. And the beat goes on.
