Sonny Igoe

Sonny Igoe, born Owen Igoe on October 8, 1923 in Jersey City, New Jersey, was an American jazz / big band drummer and educator.

Sonny began playing drums at an early age and at sixteen won the Gene Krupa drum contest in its first East Coast incarnation. Sonny went on to play with Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Charlie Ventura, among other artists. While playing wiith the CBS and NBC staff orchestras, Sonny backed performers such as Ed Sullivan, Merv Griffin, Jackie Gleason and Carol Burnett in the 1960s.

Igoe went on to become one of the most respected drum educators in the world, inspiring thousands of private students.

Performing well into his 80s, leading a big band along with saxophonist Dick Meldonian, Sonny delighted jazz fans until he was sidelined by a stroke. He continued to mentor grateful students at his home studio, where they sought weekly guidance. Beyond the drums, he was gifted with humor, kindness, unimpeachable ethics and wisdom.

Sonny Igoe died on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ; he was 88 years old.

Sonny Igoe's son, Tommy Igoe, is a celebrated jazz drummer and educator as well.
