REVIEW

Royal Crown Revue (aka RCR) has done it again, only this time it's a full-length Christmas album. Don't Be A Grinch This Year! isn't your typical Christmas CD offering in that this neo-swing band has written five original tunes, including the title track, "Don't Be A Grinch This Year", as well as "Christmas Lights", "Take It Back (I Don't Want It)", "Merry Christmas To All", and a revised version of their 1992 holiday hit, "Hey Santa", which is now a vocal duet featuring Eddie Nichols and Jennifer Keith. The remaining seven tunes on the album, "White Christmas", "Cool Yule", "Good King Wenceslas", "Blue Christmas", "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus", "Baby, It's Cold Outside",   and "The Little Drummer Boy", are all unique RCR arrangements of classic Christmas tunes.

The band's special guests on the album include trumpeter Mark Pender (The Conan O'Brian Show/Conan), trombonist Robbie Hioki (Brian Setzer Orchestra), vibraphonist Nick Mancini (who appears on "Christmas Lights" and "White Christmas") and vocalist Vicky Tafoya with her doo-woppin' rendition of "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus".

RCR drummer, Daniel Glass, kills it on the entire album with his Rockabilly, Punk, Soul, Jazz and Blues drumming styles. A special treat is Daniel's burnin' performance and tip of the hat to Art Blakey on "The Little Drummer Boy", which includes exposed drum grooves, breaks, and even a drum solo.

Fans of the neo-swing scene are going to love Royal Crown Revue's Don't Be A Grinch This Year! and should definitely plan on adding it to their holiday music library this year; it's a going to be a toe-tapping good time ... I guarantee it.

NOTE: The MP3 version of the album is available on Amazon, while the CD format is only available on the RCR website.
