Danny Gottlieb

Danny Gottlieb, born April 18, 1953 in Union, New Jersey, is an American drummer, best known for his work with the Pat Metheny Group, Mahavishnu Orchestra and the Gil Evans Orchestra. He currently resides in Nashville, TN while working as a fulltime Assistant Professor of Drumset and Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida. 

In 1975, Danny graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Miami. He has studied privately with the likes of Joe Morello, Mel Lewis, Gary Chester, Bob Moses, Ed Soph, Jack DeJohnette.

Throughout his music career, Gottlieb has worked with such groups as the Jeff Berlin Trio, Gary Burton Quartet, Stan Getz Quintet, Pat Metheny Group, Gil Evans Orchestra, Bobby McFerrin Trio, Eddie Gómez Group, Michael Franks Band, John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, Al Di Meola Project, Mike Stern Trio, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, GRP Big Band, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Joe Beck Trio, Lew Soloff Food Group, George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, WDR Big Band, NDR Big Band, Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, Tip Toe Jazz Orchestra, Randy Brecker Quartet, Neenah Freelon Group, the Blues Brothers Band, Booker T and the MG's, Jazz is Dead, Pete Levin Trio, Ali Ryerson-Joe Beck Group, Joanne Brackeen Quartet, Bobby Rydell, Joe Farrell Quintet, Andy Laverne Quintet, Jacqui Naylor Band, Fritz Renold Friends, Haru Trio, Knut Varnes Group, Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, Loren Schoenberg Big Band, Airto and Flora Purim Group, Chuck Owen Jazz Surge, and Jack Wilkins Group.

Since 2004, Gottlieb, along with his percussionist wife, Beth Gottlieb, have been members of Gary Sinise's Lt. Dan Band. 

Danny has played on more than 400 albums — nine Grammy nominations — four of which were Grammy Award winners.

As an author and educator, Danny has twelve educational DVDs and a book, The Evolution of Jazz Drumming (Hudson Music - 2011).
